DESCRIPTION:

I’m lying to the man I’m about to marry. I’m not the woman he thinks I am. But my secret’s safe. Isn’t it?

I feel like the perfect bride as I drift across the beach towards my handsome new husband, the sand warm between my toes, my ivory slip wedding dress showing off my suntan. Today is the beginning of my new life. My dark past can no longer touch me.

When I reach my husband, we kiss against the perfect backdrop of the shimmering turquoise sea. The congregation clap and I turn to smile at them.

Then my smile freezes. I see him. Sitting there amongst my loved ones. An uninvited guest who knows the truth about me and the terrible thing that happened ten years ago. The man who won’t ever let me be happy.

And as he steps forward, asking for everyone’s attention, my legs buckle. I know he wants to destroy my perfect new life.

But how can I stop someone who will never let me go? And how far will I go to keep my secrets?

If you love Lisa Jewell, K.L. Slater and Daniel Hurst, you’ll love The Wedding Guest.

MY THOUGHTS:

My perfect day...his chance for revenge...

An ivory dress. A bouquet of pink peonies. A handful of guests. A wedding on the beach to the perfect man. Emily can finally close the chapter on her past and welcome the new life that's ahead of her by Jeremy's side and his ten year old daughter Lexi. Their wedding in Kefalonia is like a dream come true. it is perfect. Until Emily sees a face from her past amongst the guests.

Christian Holmes knew Emily back in their university days when they dated for two years. And he knows things about Emily that she won't want anyone from her new life to know about. Ever. So why is he back after fifteen years of silence? And why now? It seems the secrets of her past are about to come back to haunt her unless she does his bidding. But what exactly does he want from her? And how far is he willing to go to get it?

As the uninvited wedding guest, Christian's role is central to the entire plot. But boy what an irritant he was! This is one book where I couldn't wait to finish just to wash myself of him whilst at the same time being unable to put it down. And the whole way through, you don't know who is gaslighting who...or if the author is even gaslighting YOU! A bit of clever plotting there by Ms Croft.

The entire drama was played out over the course of dual timelines of BEFORE and NOW and you just want to scream at Emily for some of the stupid and naive decisions she made. I mean, you want to escape, take your keys with you. Not put them in your bag and then leave it hanging for all and sundry to rummage through it. And then you're surprised when the keys have somehow disappeared? That's only one of her stupid decisions. She makes worse, believe me. The culmination of events plays out in the Lake District where they are seemingly trapped and what? Suddenly two other people just turn up out of nowhere. I didn't understand how that happened. I also didn't understand what really went on with Emily roommates from uni.

The ending was a little confusing where everything was turned A-about, leaving me a little puzzled. How did that happen? I mean I could see it but it didn't seem to make a lot of sense. What it did appear to be was a tangled mess. And I couldn't quite unpick it.

A promising start, an intriguing plot but the ending I felt let it down. That aside, this one is filled with plenty of secrets and lies and deception throughout, tinged with gaslighting and coercive control. Cleverly done, though, even if the ending left me feeling adrift.

I would like to thank #KathrynCroft, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheWeddingGuest in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Perfect Escape by Daniel Hurst

The Perfect Escape by Daniel Hurst
Genre: Psychological thriller, Suspense
Read: 18th September 2023
Published: 15th July 2023

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

I just wanted a place where we could get away from it all. But coming here was one of the worst mistakes of my life...

After the year Aidan and I have had, we needed some respite. My husband is overworked, whilst I'm anxious about the past, so renting a night at this converted barn house in the countryside seems like the perfect place for the pair of us to relax and unwind. It might be situated at the bottom of a large garden, but it's private enough that we don't have to mingle with the homeowners who live nearby. Or at least that's what I thought...

No sooner have we checked in for our peaceful stay, Aidan and I are invited to share a drink with the owners, Bridgette and Logan, in their opulent home. I want to politely refuse. After all, we came here to get away from people. But Aidan accepts the invitation and that's when things start spiralling out of control. That's when I realise that this is not going to be the perfect escape after all...

A fast paced and gripping psychological thriller from the author of The Couple In The Cabin, My Daughter's Boyfriend and the number one bestselling novel The Doctor's Wife.

MY THOUGHTS:

The perfect escape? Or the perfect nightmare...?

It goes without saying that Daniel Hurst is one of my favourite authors. If I'm not on one of his tours, then I'm auto-buying his books. I don't even read the premises when I pre-order them because I just know I'm going to be in for one hell of a thrill ride. And this one was no different.

Fay and Aidan are on the lookout for the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life. So when Fay came across an advertisement for the barn house in Kent - with no mobile phone coverage, no internet, no television, no technology at all - she knew it was perfect for their needs. However, little did Aidan know that she had secreted her phone away in the bottom of her suitcase "just in case".

Meanwhile, Aidan has taken himself out for a walk with nature into the woods...to secretly try and get some mobile signal to make a call he's pretty sure Fay would be annoyed about. That's why he bought this pay-as-you-go mobile when they stopped for fuel. But the voice that answers isn't one he expected, and he hangs up and turns the phone off before they could ring him back.

But both of these secrets they are hiding are only just the beginning and are nothing compared to what's about to befall them at the behest of their kindly hosts Bridgette and Logan. Fay was annoyed with Aidan for accepting Bridgette's impromptu invitation for drinks this evening because this was supposed to be a getaway from everyone. But Aidan couldn't say no and felt it was only polite to accept.

Little did they know what a Pandora's box they opened when they stepped into the cottage that evening...and just what it would cost them.

I have literally only had about two hours sleep and didn't think I would be able to devour this book as easily as others when more awake...but Daniel has the ability to wake me right up, no matter how little sleep I've had. My eyes were propped open by matchsticks as I raced through the pages in practically one sitting to see how this tangled web unravelled. And boy, did it unravel.

Hurst has the ability to take a seemingly ordinary situation and put a twist or three on it and make it something sinister and creepy. I even felt the echoes of John Nicholl in this one, particularly when it came to the basement (Nicholl loves basements in his thrillers). But even so, Hurst's thrillers are incredibly easy to read and so easy to devour in one sitting. Every single person in his small cast of characters always has something to hide and he cleverly weaves each of their secrets into the story and then stealthily pulls a single thread as we watch it quickly unravel.

From the first moment, we are drip fed information about each of the characters in such a way that it feels as if we know everything there is to know about them. But in true Hurst fashion, he has plenty of other cards up his sleeve to pull out further down the line. And while I piece together some of the story, he still surprises me with how he threads everything back together to create something of a different picture.

I had to chuckle at one of the other reviews who stated "Far too long. I skimmed through most of it after the first few chapters." Long? It's only 216 pages!

Once again, Daniel Hurst thrills and chills with this somewhat sinister and creepy tale nestled in the Kent countryside. It may be far fetched, as many of his tales are, but they are fun and entertaining and are quick and easy reads. He never fails to thrill and he never disappoints. Can't wait to see what he has lined up for us next, which in Hurst's true prolific fashion could be in a fortnight.

REVIEW: A Child for Sale by Pam Howes

A Child for Sale by Pam Howes
Genre: Dual timeline, Historical fiction, Contemporary fiction
Read: 9th September 2023
Published: 15th September 2023

★★★★★ 5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

I reach out, arms aching to hold my newborn baby, and catch just a glimpse of soft, dark-brown hair before someone pushes me back onto the bed. ‘It’s alive,’ says the woman who delivered my child before she places something over my face. My last thought is of my baby’s first cry before my world goes dark.

1964 . When seventeen-year-old Laura Sims realises she’s pregnant, her boyfriend Pete says they will look after and love their baby together; but Laura’s mother turns on them in fury. Wrenched from her home and the boy she loves Laura is thrown into a home for unmarried mothers . With no access to the outside world and treated harshly, Laura fights to keep her child safe and to find a way to escape the nightmare…

2015 . Despite the anguish of losing their firstborn, Laura and Pete have been happily married for fifty years. But they’ve never given up on their lost child. And when Laura uncovers a tattered old diary from someone who worked at the home where she last saw her child, her heart breaks in those who ran the home sold their baby to a desperate, childless family .

Such cruel actions give Laura and Pete a tiny sliver of hope. Is there a chance to find their child, safe and happy, or will their search bring them only heartbreak and devastation?

A totally heart-wrenching and utterly gripping novel about how far a mother will go to find her child. Before We Were Yours , Sold on a Monday and The Orphan Train fans will be swept away by this gorgeous novel that reminds us to never give up on those we love.

MY THOUGHTS:

Reminiscent of the Magdalene laundries, A CHILD FOR SALE is a heartbreaking tale about a home for unmarried mothers run by five Catholic nuns who instill nothing but fear and terror into young girls who needed compassion, understanding and support during what was a life-changing event for them.

Cheshire, 2015: When the remains of what appears to be an infant is found locked away in a tin box that had been buried in the grounds of what had been The Pines, a home for unmarried mothers in the late fifties to late sixties, police are called in.

At their home in Liverpool, Laura and Pete Maxwell are settling in for the night after birthday celebrations with the family when they see reports on the news about the find. While they are happily married now, fifty years ago they were teenagers when Laura had been incarcerated there and their baby wrenched away from her against her will. And despite the years since, they have never stopped searching for their son.

Manchester, 1964: Seventeen year old Laura Sims and her boyfriend Peter Maxwell find themselves in a quandary when Laura discovers she is pregnant. They have decided to marry but as they are under 21 they need their parents' permission to do. Peter's parents are disappointed by the turn of events but grant their blessing but Laura's mother is having none of it. How dare Laura show her up by such immoral behaviour. She refuses their request to marry and before Laura and Pete could make their escape, Audrey has Laura packed off The Pines in Cheshire. There she meets Anna, and the two forge a friendship that will see them through coming years.

But life at The Pines is a harsh one. The girls are treated like slaves with no outside contact with family or friends for the duration - their penance for their immoral ways. They were punished with no food if their work was not completed or they somehow broke the rules. When they go into labour, they are not to disturb the nuns until their contractions are two minutes apart and only then are they taken to the upstairs delivery room. Their cries could be heard from the floor below and no pain relief is given to the girls (more penance for their immoral ways) after which their babies are whisked away and are never seen again. Some of the girls are told their babies have died, whilst others were adopted to "good God-fearing families more deserving of them".

When Laura's baby son is born, she wanted nothing more than to bring him home. She and Pete were to marry, they could give their son a loving home. But the nuns wrenched him from her, Laura's last memory of his dark hair before a black mask was placed over her face and then...oblivion. When she woke to a kindly face in Olive, Laura was told her baby was gone and she was going home. Home...where was that? In the six months she'd been there, her mother had died and her aunt and uncle had sold her home, thus holding the funds from the sale in trust for her to access when she was 21. The only place she had to return to was a room in student accommodation with Pete until they could marry and buy their own home.

Five decades later and the memories resurface along with the remains. Decades old secrets that have long since been buried in those grounds bring with them the hope of being reunited with their long lost son at last. Their firstborn, cruelly snatched away without permission, stolen from them and sold for profit. Laura and Pete, along with lifelong friends Anna and Mick, as well as the police and extended family, begin the search with fresh leads at their disposal. Dare they hope? They have never given up searching for him. They've never given up hope.

Oh my. This has got to be one of Pam Howes' best yet. I have always thought the mother and baby homes, the Magdalene laundries and the like, would make a wonderful (and heartbreaking) story. And while this is fiction, such places did indeed exist. It is heartbreaking that these girls didn't receive the proper support needed in a world that was swiftly changing whilst society refused to keep up. I love the dual timeline aspect as we meet both teenage and middle-aged Laura and Pete along with Anna and Mick, as their stories unfold.

I absolutely adored this book and read it in one sitting. It is THAT good and it is such a quick read. While it may not always be an easy read, it is written in that easy style that makes the pages seemingly turn of their own accord. This story is packed full of family secrets that Laura must face as the past unravels in the present and everything ultimately comes full circle.

A pure delight to read that will bring tears to your eyes and smiles to your face throughout. Packed full of joys and sorrows, sadness and happiness, A CHILD FOR SALE is Pam Howes best yet. It goes without saying - a well deserved 5 stars.

I would like to thank #PamHowes, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #AChildForSale in exchange for an honest review.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Pam Howes is an ex Interior Designer who loves creating stories, but only started writing seriously about twelve years ago. The idea for her first novel, set in the sixties, came from her time as a teenager, working in a local record store and hanging round with the musicians who frequented the business.

That first novel evolved into a series set in the fictional town of Pickford, based on her home town of Stockport. Three Steps to Heaven; 'Til I Kissed You; Always On My Mind; Not Fade Away, and That'll Be The Day, follow the lives and loves through the decades of fictional Rock'n'Roll band The Raiders.

Pam signed a second contract with the award winning publisher Bookouture with the first novel in her Lark Lane series, The Factory Girls of Lark Lane, published in July 2018. Her first series for Bookouture - The Mersey Trilogy featuring The Liverpool Girls, The Forgotten Family of Liverpool and The Lost Daughter of Liverpool - is also available in E book, paperback and as audio books.

Pam is a big fan of sixties music and it's this love and the support and encouragement of her musician partner that compelled her to write the series. Pam has three adult daughters and seven grandchildren. She lives in Cheshire and as well as writing novels, writes short stories, which have appeared in charity anthologies and online e-zines, and poems, many of which are published.

REVIEW: The Bad Penny by Lindsey Hutchinson

The Bad Penny by Lindsey Hutchinson
Genre: Historical fiction, Sagas, Victoria era
Read: 9th September 2023
Published: 14th September 2023

★★★★★ 5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

If you're born with nothing you have to make your own luck.

When Jared Johnson first meets Clarice Connaught he saves her from the hands of her father, who is brutally beating her in the street. Never one to walk past someone in distress, Jared doesn’t hesitate to help. But who is this girl and what is her story?

Jared Johnson started with nothing. At just twelve-years-old he was orphaned and homeless, but eight years later, Jared is a success. Running McGuire’s Rag & Bone Yard and surrounded by friends, all Jared needs now is to find the perfect girl to settle down with.

Nothing has come easy for Clarice but still she has dreams of a grander life and the finer things. And if her father isn’t willing to provide them then Clarice will do anything to find someone who is.

Jared and Clarice have one thing in common – they are survivors – and in Queen Victoria’s Birmingham you need your wits about you to keep the wolf from the door. But Clarice isn’t everything she seems, and like a bad penny that always shows up, she brings more trouble for Jared and his friends than they could ever have imagined…

Lindsey Hutchinson, the top 10 bestseller, Queen of the Black Country Saga, is back with a page-turning and heart-warming story perfect fans of Katie Flynn, Val Wood and Lyn Andrews.

MY THOUGHTS:

Her life can turn on the toss of a coin...

Birmingham 1894: We meet up with Jared Johnson once again as he manages Toby Maguire's Rag and Bone yard, this time not as a ragged orphan, but an established man of means and dreams. When he hears the screams of a young girl being beaten by her father, Jared immediately comes to her rescue of this damsel in distress. He offers her to afternoon tea and to take her on as a housekeeper to keep her away from her father's mean drunken fists. But Clarice has other ideas. Grander ideas. And they won't be found with Jared Johnson.

Clarice Connaught is the only child of John and Jenny, her mother having died of pneumonia after the death of a baby she tried birthing. Since then she has had to skivvy and keep house for her and her father while he works hard to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. At 19, John feels it's long past time Clarice got herself a job to help bring in another wage. That, or finds herself a husband. But again, Clarice has other ideas. None of which mean lifting a finger or become a man's skivvy.

As soon as Jared saw Clarice he was taken in by her beauty...and the stories she told him about her life at home. He worried for her and her safety and stopped by the next day to check on her. As he turned to leave, he was disheartened to see that she did not wait to see him off but had rather closed the door. Jared thought it was love at first sight...until he met Rose. Then life changes considerably as he finds love and secures his place in the world.

Wanting more than love and a life of skivvying, Clarice packs a few belongings and with the housekeeping money flees to find greener pastures.  She wants a more comfortable life, a grander life. She wants money and status and all the things those have to offer which she won't find around here. And so she becomes Clara Christian and meets Clifford St John who introduces her to casinos. There she plays the hand she knows best - cards - and wins handsomely. Her appetite whet, she craves the tables and the winnings she collects from them, building her wealth and therefore able to keep herself in the luxuries to which she has grown accustomed. But like a bad penny, nothing lasts forever...

What a delightful read THE BAD PENNY is! I was so thrilled to revisit Jared and his friends at Maguire's once again. Though mostly feel good throughout, there is an emotional event that is both heartbreaking and lifechanging for Jared and everyone else. I love how they all band together like one big family. The two stories of Jared and Clarice are woven together nicely while two separate threads they still entwined on the fringes. As much of a bad penny Clarice was, I was actually please with her outcome despite the circumstances. And as for Jared? I'd love to see more of him, Rose and their friends.

As usual, Lindsey Hutchinson has woven another delightful tale that is worthy of 5 stars. It is an exceptionally easy and quick read easily devoured in one sitting.

REVIEW: The Lies by Mark Hurst

The Lies by Mark Hurst
Genre: Psychological thriller, Suspense
Read: 12th September 2023
Published: 9th September 2023

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

When Samantha and David decide to have a night out separately with their friends, events overtake them, and the lies lead them down a path of destruction.

To everyone else, it looked like Samantha and David had the perfect life. From meeting at university and falling in love to starting a successful business together, they made a great team. However, as everybody knows, appearances can be deceptive…

That one night out changed everything between them and things would never be the same again; not unless they could face up to their own truths and correct the wrongs.

Neither thought they could become the people they became and do the things they did. But that’s just what happens when two people wronged become consumed by a need for the truth, for justice, and ultimately, for the price to be paid.

If either of them had let it go, it could have all been so different – but neither of them could.

The fast paced and gripping debut novel from crime and psychological thriller author Mark Hurst that will keep you turning the pages as you try to answer the question yourself – could you have let it go?

MY THOUGHTS:

How far would you go to get what you want...?

I am huge fan of Daniel Hurst so when he announced that his father, Mark, was dipping into the psychological thriller realm I just had to take a peek! Then having been given a preview to his talents with his free short story "The Last Woman", I was keen to delve into his recently published debut. And having just closed the book...where do I begin this review?

So I downloaded a sample to begin with to see if it would be up my street, and it certainly piqued my interest so off to Amazon I went to buy the full book. If RL was not as busy as it is, I would have finished long before now.

The story begins with friends on an innocent night out. Samantha heads into Manchester with the girls whilst her husband David undertakes something of a pub crawl with his mates in Bolton. But the night ends abruptly when news of David's arrest after a pub fight resulted in the death of the other party. The victim, nicknamed Snarler in David's narrative, continued to get in David's face and rile him for whatever reason that alludes David. All he knows is that he threw a punch to leave him alone and he did. Next thing they knew, Snarler is dead and David is arrested.

Samantha remains by her husband's side throughout the investigation and subsequent trial, which doesn't appear to be going his way at all. In the end he is found guilty and imprisoned for manslaughter for a term of ten years with parole in six. And so begins his sentence...

But then new information comes to light regarding her husband and given this information, Samantha takes steps to distance herself from David before removing him as a board member of the fledgling company they started together and then divorcing him. Angry at first, David accepts his lot in life and puts his head down to serve his time.

In the meantime, research they had been working on for many years brings forth results in the form of a lifesaving miracle drug. As a result, Samantha becomes a very wealthy woman, a very powerful woman, with celebrity status and very much in demand. Such demand results in all sorts of problems such as stalkers, which she inadvertently finds herself on the receiving end of, and one who gets just a little too close for comfort.

Then when David is released about five years into his sentence, he meets up with Samantha to bring closure to that chapter of both of their lives. But what he does instead is inadvertently opens a Pandora's box...

This book was fast paced from beginning to end with such short snappy chapters (my favourite kind) that keep the pace moving at a rapid rate. The narratives drift between David and Samantha primarily with the investigating police officer also thrown in on occasion. The story takes us all over the world and culminates down under here in Australia!

Having said that, I do have to mention an error made in relation to Cairns and Cape Tribulation. When Samantha first arrives, the chapter is titled "Queensland, New South Wales". At first I thought it was going to take place over the two states - being Queensland AND New South Wales - but instead Samantha heads to Cairns and Cape Tribulation in far north Queensland. Later in the Epilogue, it referred to New South Wales police looking into an investigation but given as it took place in far North Queensland, it would be Queensland Police that would be investigating. Queensland and New South Wales are two separate states that border each other and not one inside the other's jurisdiction. So that chapter should have been titled "Queensland, Australia". New South Wales is entirely separate and had nothing to do with this story whatsoever. For clarity and accuracy, I felt this should be mentioned to save confusion.

I do love the style of writing. Don't be fooled into thinking "like father, like son" as their styles are completely different. But both are equally enthralling. I love how each of the chapters entirely separate snippets and how it kept the pace moving quickly. The epilogue wraps everything up neatly like a newspaper article. But it's the final lines I was most interested in...could there be a follow-up? The path has been paved for one with those final words. I would certainly be interested to read Blade's story, if that may be the case.

A fast paced thrill-a-minute read weaving a tangled web and mind-boggling twists that will blow you away. Definitely worth reading this fantastic debut.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Born and raised in Bolton, UK, a true Lancastrian and a child of the sixties, Mark finally decided to pursue his passion for storytelling after a long and eventful career in a completely different industry, that sometimes involved more fiction than fact!

He entered construction at the age of 18 and has been involved with hundreds of large civil engineering projects for the last 40 years as a Civil Engineer and Surveyor, Estimator and Commercial Director, working in various far flung locations such as Hong Kong, Scandinavia and Wigan.

Mark has a passion for reading legal, crime and psychological thrillers; he often claims he can predict the end to a story … and when he gets it wrong, he’s pleasantly surprised. He also enjoys first hand accounts of military and espionage events and when he’s not reading and writing, he can be found watching the History Channel.

Married with two grown children and four grandchildren, his son Daniel convinced him it was time to start committing some of his own stories to print … and there are a few.  Drawing on his own life experiences, Mark weaves them into his stories but with a twist … it all could have happened.

Why Wooded Hill Books?

The origin of the surname Hurst – ancient Anglo-Saxon topographic name for someone who lived near a wooded hill or thicket.

REVIEW: The Nanny's Child by L.G. Davis

The Nanny's Child (The Lies We Tell #2) by L.G. Davis
Genre: Psychological thriller, Domestic thriller, Domestic suspense
Read: 8th September 2023
Published: 11th September 2023

★★★★★ 5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

I’ve always had the urge to look after other people’s children. To pour care and love into their lives, because I know what happens when you don’t. There are terrible people out there, who have been neglected and hurt and want to see the world burn. You don’t want people like that in your home…

I look up at the beautiful woman with perfectly painted red lipstick standing on the front steps of her grand Victorian house. Harper already trusts me to take care of her two little girls: believes the lies I’ve told her about where I come from and how many other mothers have welcomed me into their homes. Then I see the familiar form of her husband. My ex. The man who knows where my own missing baby boy is.

I know Troy will never admit to knowing who I really am. Not after what he did to me. But I still expect to see shock and recognition in his cool blue eyes when he meets me: the woman his wife has employed to care for their children. But he simply smiles. He welcomes me into his home.

I’m determined to get the truth out of Troy. But soon I realize I made a terrible mistake in coming here. Someone has been in my room. And the gun I hid under my mattress is missing.

Troy thinks he can scare me away. But if he won’t tell me where my son is, he has no idea how far I’ll go to get revenge…

A deliciously addictive and heart-pounding thriller. Readers of The Housemaid, The Marriage and Gone Girl will be shocked by the endless twists in this unputdownable page-turner.

MY THOUGHTS:

Now this...THIS...is more like it! The first book "The New Nanny" just didn't live up to what I know Liz Davis can do. Everyone was just a little too weird and it just didn't sit right with me. But this is sooooo much better! Others are saying you can't read this one without reading the first but I say you can. While they do go hand in hand, this one is probably so much more better without the first one. You are given all the information you learn from reading the first book but without all the long-winded faffing about. This one is just so much better and is right up there back to Davis' usual tempo and fine calibre.

The dived straight into this upon finishing and reviewing the first book so everything was still fresh in my memory. The only thing you will really get by reading the first book before this one is a vehement hatred for Wyatt. In this book, he turns up and shows his sinister side but you don't get that true evil like you did in the first book. I wanted to see him get his comeuppance as I found him truly evil and I expected to see him under every rock and around every corner, so when he failed to materialise I wondered whether Davis was gaslighting us into believing what he was capable of.

At the end of the first book, Christa gave birth to a baby girl she named Heather, after returning from her harrowing experience in Austria upon discovering that Wyatt wasn't her missing son she believed him to be. However, the bond she developed with him he refused to relinquish firmly believing she was his mother regardless of what the DNA tests revealed. She fled New York in the hope to put as much distance between her and Wyatt but also because of a note that was left in her mailbox. All it had was a name and an address alongside a note which read "what you are looking for is here."

So now Christa finds herself back in Kentucky not far from where she grew up in the cult from which she escaped as a teenager. The name and address she was given lead her to Troy and Harper Wells, but as soon as Christa walks into their home she knows she is looking at a face from her past. Although he goes by another name now, she would know Brett Lawson anywhere...after all they shared a child together. A child she has travelled the world searching for. A child that was ripped from her when she was locked away for being unfit and unstable. When she returned to the community, her baby was gone. A week later, she escaped with the help of Emily whose family delivered groceries to their community a couple of times a week. She owes Emily her life. But she owes Brett Lawson nothing. She is here only to find out where her child is...and then she will leave.

But nothing is as straightforward as it seems. She came to Esterford and garnered the position of nanny to Troy and Harper's seven year old twin girls Ella and Leah. The family dote on her now six month old daughter Heather who she takes with her whilst nannying the twins. She didn't want to but it isn't long before Christa begins to become attached to the girls and her new life with the Wells. Harper and Troy and the perfect couple, so obviously in love. And they go out of their way to help others, sprinkling kindness and compassion in their wake. They almost seem too good to be true if Christa hadn't seen it with her own eyes. And you know what they say - if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

And then there is the proverbial fly in the ointment. Wyatt, you may ask? Well, yes. But someone a little closer to home in Esterford in the form of neighbour Madison Baker. She watches Christa from her window daily as she goes to and from the cottage on the lake that the Wells' have made available for her and Heather. Madison is sure Christa is hiding something and is up to no good and she is determined to find out what. Harper is like a sister to her, her soul sister, and she would do anything to protect her. And if that meant uncovering what their new nanny was up to, then so be it.

But like all good domestic and psychological thrillers, every character is hiding something. We know what Christa is hiding and we're with her all the way, but what about everyone else? Is Troy who Christa believes him to be? Is Harper really whiter than white? And as for Madison...what is really her agenda here? And then there is Wyatt. Like a bad smell he lingers in the background refusing to go away. Is he really determined to harass Christa forever? And above all, does Christa find her son?

So many questions...and so many answers are finally given. Including to those left unanswered in the first book. This book is waaaaaay better than the first and I raced through it at breakneck speed almost devouring it in one sitting if not for the pesky need to sleep. I left an hour to go to finish today and I devoured it, irritated by the slightest noise or interruption that took me away from the unfolding events for even a second. It's that addictive! Easily one of her best. Do you have to read the first book? I don't think so. In fact, as I said, I think it reads better without the first book and leaving what happened in Austria just as a backstory of "what came before" kind of thing.

THE NANNY'S CHILD is so addictive, so engaging and so brilliant it is easily one of Davis' best. She orchestrated some classic twists that even I didn't see coming. It's so twisted, so wicked and so creepy your paranoia will be ramped up along with the palpable tension. Could it be improved? The ending maybe a little twee but who cares? It has closure. Everything has come full circle and at last there is an ending. Does it need a third book? Definitely not. Leave well enough alone. It's perfect as it is.

REVIEW: The New Nanny by L.G. Davis

The New Nanny (The Lies We Tell #1) by L.G. Davis
Genre: Psychological thriller, Domestic thriller, Suspense
Read: 7th September 2023
Published: 11th September 2023

★★★★ 3.5 stars (rounded up)

DESCRIPTION:

A forged reference and a fake social media page is all it takes to convince the Mayers I’m the perfect person to look after their son Wyatt. Some people would be scared to move to a remote mountain village with a family they’ve never met, but it’s exactly where I need to be. Because Wyatt is my child…

My sweet little boy was taken from me. There are dark secrets in my past that will stop me from ever getting Wyatt back, but now I’m his nanny, I’ll finally get to raise him like he’s my own.

When I arrive at the Mayers’ house, I’m stunned by the striking glass family home and Robin and Paul’s lavish lifestyle, which I couldn’t afford in my wildest dreams. But Wyatt seems troubled. Robin claims he needs therapy, she says he barely speaks to her, and soon I realise that he’s rarely allowed to leave the house…

When Wyatt gives me a shy smile and begins to open up, it’s clear he needed me just as much as I needed him. We’re making up for the time we lost with long afternoons playing games and baking apple pie.

Everything finally seems perfect in my life. Until I find out what happened to his last nanny…

An utterly heart-pounding and nail-biting read that will have you racing through the pages. Perfect for fans of The Marriage, The Housemaid and The Family Upstairs.

MY THOUGHTS:

"People say that revenge is a dish best enjoyed cold, but I prefer to serve mine piping hot."

Having enjoyed the last four books by Liz, I was thrilled to receive this new one and its sequel. But I don't know if it was just me (with a few things going on RL) that this one didn't quite enamour me as the others. It was still a thrilling read, chilling even in parts, and it left you feeling "what the heck have I just read?" I think I found the characters hard to connect to also which does make a story difficult.

We meet Christa as she lands in Austria to take up a nanny/housekeeper position with the Mayers at their luxurious villa. The family may be impossibly wealthy with everything they could ever want but they are emotionally distant, neglecting their their 15 year old adoptive son Wyatt. But for Christa, he is the very reason she took this job.

When she was just 17 years old, Christa had a baby boy who was then wrenched away from her and adopted out. By chance she came across Wyatt after searching for her little boy and was determined to be in his life. She fakes her experience and talks herself up to get the job and thus accompanies the family to Austria for the summer. It isn't long before Christa sees how the family behaves around Wyatt and how he reacts to their presence. And it breaks her heart. And so she befriends the boy, determined to look out for him as his parents obviously don't.

But when Christa wants to take Wyatt out of the villa to experience life beyond it, Robin vehemently forbids it. Wyatt has everything he needs in the villa; he doesn't need to leave. Over games of chess and board games, Christa bonds with Wyatt and before long she ignores Robin's strict rules forbidding him to leave. He is like a different boy out in the village and when he is with the horses he begged her to take him to see. It seems it is only in Robin and Paul's company is he silent and withdrawn. And Christa finds herself wondering why that is...

Then she meets James on one of her outings who tells her about the previous nanny that worked for the Mayers seven years before. She disappeared without a trace and was never heard from again. Rumours are rife in the village, and the reason why Robin doesn't venture out herself. But after a little digging of her own, Christa wonders if she hasn't unknowingly walked into a trap. Filled with secrets and deception, the manipulative Mayer family have lured Christa into their web...but is it too late to make her escape? Before it's too late? And what will it mean for Wyatt? She can't leave him behind.

The tale is compelling and fast paced but I felt it was lacking something of Davis' other thrillers. What that is, I'm not sure, but it is something. However, the pages are still filled to the brim with dark secrets, twisted lies, deadly deceptions and shocking twists. Basically, assume nothing. I have to wonder where the second one "The Nanny's Child" will take us.

A twisted psychological suspense thriller about motherhood, obsession and dark dark secrets.
