DESCRIPTION:

“Adele, we believe your husband is missing.” As everything around me starts to blur, I go over the words once more: “your husband is missing.” Four simple words with the power to shatter my whole world in an instant.

Working as a marriage counselor I’m used to the tragedies that come out of nowhere. People trust me to help them through life’s big moments. The things that leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the person you love the most.

But I never thought trouble would land on my own doorstep.

As I start to piece together our last conversation desperate for any clues I can find, the cop standing in front of me reveals that my husband never told his co-workers he was married. He was seemingly living a double life right in front of me.

Days later, as I search through our home, I discover a hidden box of baby clothes that suggest my husband was starting to build the perfect life without me.

My entire career has been built on separating the truth from the lies. My husband may think he has pulled off the greatest lie of all but he is not the only one keeping a secret in this marriage.

All I know for certain is that when the truth comes out, only one of us will make it out alive.

A totally addictive and unputdownable psychological thriller about deadly obsession and twisted lies perfect for fans of Gone Girl, The Perfect Marriage, The Wife Before Me and anything by Freida McFadden.

MY THOUGHTS:

"You trust her with your darkest secrets...you shouldn't..."

I really don't know what to think of this book. On the one hand it seriously messes with your head...yet on the other, it seriously messes with your head! Seriously, it is twisted and not always in a good way. And yet all throughout you don't know who you can trust. And the main character, Adele, was so completely unreliable I didn't know if I could trust her either!

The premise for this book had me hooked right away. Missing husband of a marriage counsellor? Sign me up! No, not for one of her sessions...somehow I don't think she'd be the best fit for marriage counselling under the circumstances. But for a peek into her own troublesome marriage? Now that I'd be interested in.

Adele is no stranger to fame. Her parents were daytime TV pop-psychologists of the nineties who went on to make a killing...before being killed in a car accident themselves. Now two decades later, she's married to Patrick and opens the door one morning to a police officer who was once her boyfriend, some fifteen years ago. More cheesy daytime TV plot? It seems so. Anyway, Cameron the cop has come knocking for a welfare check on her husband Patrick who apparently hasn't turned up for work. In fact, today was his first day back after a two week vacation. Which was news to Adele who had seen hubby off to work every morning and returning every night. So where was he going every day, if not work? And where was he now if not at work?

But that's not all of it. Apparently, none of his colleagues know anything of Adele's existence. They've only been married seven years and he's worked at the company for three, so what did he tell them of his private life? But this secrecy was only the beginning. The more Adele delved, the more she discovered Patrick lied, cheated and stole from her...and others. Did she even know him at all?

What amazed me was that throughout all this going on Adele continued to meet clients, with the help of Emma who worked as her assistant. I'm not sure what else Emma's role was besides a grade A bitch. The way she spoke to Adele was just mindblowing and the fact that Adele just let it go like water off a duck's back just made my head hurt.

And then just when things couldn't get any worse...someone is out to trash Adele's reputation by digging into her parents' deaths and the cloud that apparently now surrounds their celebrity status. It doesn't matter that Adele doesn't talk to them, they hash it out on national TV anyway. And Adele's business begins to suffer and Emma becomes even bitchier (if that's possible).

And then things start to get a little confusing. Bodies begin to start piling up at such a speed I wondered if there would be any characters left by the end of it!

I still don't even know what to think of of this book. I feel I must give it a good review (being on the tour and all) but how? The plot was just ridiculous. It revolves around the disappearance of our main character's husband, who we don't know anything about beyond being a liar, a cheat and a scammer. There's no depth to his character; no narrative from him (even just one chapter from him would have sufficed to give him some kind of depth). And in the end we just get a brief description of what happened in a couple of paragraphs. Like what? His disappearance was meant to be the main plot focus and that's all the answers we get? And don't get me started on Adele. She had about as much depth as a puddle. She just drifted through the entire book without much of a fight beyond "Patrick is not getting away with blah blah blah".

The premise was good. The concept was intriguing. But the execution was so completely lacking I was left with the only positive thought being it was a nice quick read. Oh, that and the delicious twist at the end. Now that I really did like!

I would like to thank #DeaPoirier, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheMarriageCounselor in exchange for an honest review.

MY THOUGHTS:

"Someone is watching you...they know your secret..."

We're back with DI Gina Harte who is very much looking forward to spending time with her granddaughter Gracie while her daughter Hannah is taking a much-needed holiday in Paris with her partner. However, as luck would have it, in the midst of building a den with Gracie she receives a call to brutal murder scene...despite being booked on holiday leave. Gina is torn. She knows this will cause yet more friction between her and Hannah, after finally gaining her trust back, and yet she cannot let a murderer remain loose on the streets of Cleevesford. So she accepts the case and leaves Gracie in the capable hands of her boss and on-and-off-again lover DCI Chris Briggs, who later informs Gina that Gracie has had the the best time having dressed up in an oversized stab vest sporting a police had and arresting half of the relief. But none of that will wash with Hannah, Gina knows, but resolves to face that later. Right now, she has a killer to catch.

The body of a homeless man, Wesley Reid, has been found in the hostel in which he has been staying by one of the other residents and soon everyone staying in the Cleevesford Cleaver want to be relocated - NOW! But there is little anyone can do with no space available, which is what Sasha Kennedy faces daily in trying to find suitable premises for those who need it. Sadly, there are never enough rooms or flats available and the homeless community is endless. But Sasha does her best with what little resources she has...sometimes even paying for a hotel room for the odd one on occasion out of her own pocket. She just wishes there was more that she could do.

When Sasha recognises the murdered man she begins to wonder if the past is coming back to haunt her. Particularly as she has been targeted by a youth on an electric scooter outside her own flat with the odd flat tyre, messages pushed through her mailslot and more recently a written message in graffiti in one of the older buildings set to be reopened for community housing.

"I will make you pay."

Meanwhile, 18 year Macie Perrin is a true-crime YouTuber wanting her own fifteen minutes of fame. She gets herself caught up in the mystery and finds herself talking directly with the killer. She is so excited that this will mean big things for her! But is she getting in over her head?

And then there is Gina. When a second victim is discovered, her team are busy trying to find the common thread linking them with so few clues. A one pound coin and the smell of burning sage.

"When is a pound not a pound or a herb not a herb?"

Added to all this is her dilemma with Gracie. She is meant to be looking after her and, despite the whale of a time Gracie is having with her colleague's wife Mrs O, her greatest fears are realised when her ex-mother-in-law sees her working when she should be looking after Gracie...and is on hand to swoop in and take over when Hannah gets wind of it all.

This series has always been one of my favourites and I've always loved the camaraderie between Gina and her team. There is a hint of what went on before between her and Briggs, their on-and-off relationship once again seemingly lingering in the background, though Gina is far from forgiving of Brigg's past behaviour and to be honest I can't say that I blame her in this instance. And then there is Hannah. That girl got on my nerves in the early part of the series and finally I thought we were past all that. But no. One wrong move and she is quick to judge her mother once again, forgetting all the sacrifices "she" made as a single mother for her laying all the blame squarely at Gina's feet. And still, after placing Gracie in Hetty's care she STILL blames Gina for what happened! Yet Hetty was the one who supposedly had care of the child! That really annoyed me and I'm so peeved at Hannah who really cannot give her mother a break. Ever. And Gina? She knew how Hannah would react so why did she take the case? She was on leave. She was entitled to that leave so why just say "thanks but no thanks"? Because Gina must single-handedly bring down all of Cleevesford's killers, no matter what. Sorry Gina, but family come first...always.

Although I thoroughly enjoy this series, I admit to being completely frustrated by the behaviour of some of those once again...for reasons I state above. That aside, this is one of the best series out there and I can't wait to see what's in store for Gina next. I hope she gets her personal life sorted between Briggs and Hannah's bad attitude.

Overall, a good solid thriller and addition to the series but it is recommended, if coming in late to the party, to start from the beginning to appreciate the characters and the series in full...complete with the underlying backstories.

REVIEW: The Fall by Louise Jensen

The Fall by Louise Jensen
Genre: Psychological thriller, Suspense
Read: 23rd April 2023
Published: 27th July 2023

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

She promised not to tell. They made sure she couldn’t…

At her surprise 40th birthday party, Kate Granger feels like the luckiest woman in the world but just hours later her fifteen-year-old daughter, Caily, is found unconscious underneath a bridge when she should have been at school.

Now, Caily lies comatose in her hospital bed, and the police don’t believe it was an accident. As the investigation progresses, it soon becomes clear that not everyone in the family was where they claimed to be at the time of her fall.

Caily should be safe in hospital but not everyone wants her to wake up. Someone is desperate to protect the truth and it isn’t just Caily’s life that is in danger.

Because some secrets are worth killing for…

MY THOUGHTS:

She promised not to tell...they made sure she didn't...

It has been such a while since I've read a Louise Jensen thriller that I'd forgotten how well she can spin a tale. And that is why, despite only a few hours sleep, I have devoured THE FALL in under twenty-four hours. So many twists; so many secrets. I flipped through all 450 pages faster than I could read them. Short chapters kept the pace moving and multiple perspectives kept it interesting. who pushed Caily from the bridge? And why? And what secrets are they trying to keep from coming out? A family under pressure from all angles, nothing will prepare them for what is about to unfold.

Twins Kate and Beth have just turned forty and celebrated with a surprise party in a barn on the family farm. Throughout their entire lives they have been each other's half, always there when they need one another. But a day after their party, Kate's world comes crashing down when her 15 year old daughter Caily is found unconscious below a rickety bridge, having been pulled from the water. Her rescuer dialed 999 but was nowhere to be found once emergency services arrived. Rushed straight to hospital, Caily is in a coma having suffered a head injury and nearly drowning. But only time will tell when and if she comes out of the coma and how much she has been affected by the fall.

Kate gets the call and rushes to her daughter's bedside. What was Caily doing on the bridge? She should have been at school doing the final rehearsal for the opening night of "La La Land" in which Caily had the female lead. So why was she on the bridge and not rehearsing? And Caily's cousin Tegan came bursting into the house she shared with her mum Beth, Kate's twin sister, tears streaming down her face the moment Kate received the call about Caily. Did she have something to do with Caily's accident? Does Tegan know more than she's letting on?

Both fifteen, Caily and Tegan are more like siblings than cousins and they do everything together. Actually, interestingly enough I recently read that genetically, children of identical twins are more half-siblings than first cousins. Anyway, the girls are as inseparable as their mothers have always been with their own language - "I see you" countered with "I saw you first" - and their indivisible closeness. When Caily wins the female lead with Tegan as her understudy the girls are thrilled and can't wait to share the news with their family. But jealousy is rife and one Dani King can't help but make pig references to Caily with utterances of "oink oink" which only serves to chip away at Caily's already dwindling confidence. And that is only the beginning.

Add to this a nefarious character or two, some secret plotting while other secrets are exposed...with Caily uncovering one of them, did someone then serve to silence her for good before she could reveal what she discovered? Or was it the cyberbullying that lead to her fall? Caily's despair is felt throughout in the lead-up to her fall as is the despair of those around her. Everyone, it seems, has secrets to hide but who would want to silence a teenage girl to keep them hidden?

Louise Jensen is a masterful storyteller. Her settings are always atmospheric and Marsh Farm was the perfect backdrop for the unravelling of all their lives. There is a sense of claustrophobia, a tension that's palpable and a growing despair amongst the characters that just may be their downfall. There's a growing threat of danger as revelations emerge whilst a suspicion towards foul play over what happened to Caily is ever present. But who would push her and why? Everyone but everyone is under scrutiny that no one escapes suspicion.

THE FALL is a totally immersive and atmospheric psychological thriller in which twist after twist and secret after secret is unravelled. Prepare to be shocked because I was. I never suspected for a moment. But once it became clear, I just felt so so sad. In the end, it was a tragic tale. But without question, an addictive and compelling read from beginning to end.

I would like to thank #LouiseJensen, #Netgalley and #HQStories for an ARC of #TheFall in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Lie by Kathryn Croft

The Lie by Kathryn Croft
Genre: Domestic thriller, Suspense
Read: 20th April 2023
Published: 20th April 2023

★★★ 3.5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

My son said he walked his girlfriend home. But now she is missing…

Our new home was meant to be a chance for us to start again, to make new friends and forget the past. And as I look around the barbeque we’ve thrown for our neighbours, I dare to dream that things will be all right. I watch my husband joking as he flips burgers and my daughter turning cartwheels on our sun-bleached lawn. And then my gaze falls on my son Jacob, and his new girlfriend Rose, in her light blue jeans and her green crop top. There is a worried expression clouding her beautiful eyes…

The next day I get a call from Rose’s mother that chills me to the bone. Rose never returned after our party.

I wake my still-sleeping son, who walked Rose home the night before, and beg him for answers. Jacob promises he saw Rose to her front door, and I know he would never lie.

But when the police find Rose’s house keys hidden in our garden and a witness claims to have seen them arguing in the street, everyone insists I can’t believe what Jacob is telling me.

I will do anything to protect my boy. But I need to find a way to make the questions stop. Because there’s something about our family that nobody can ever know. And as the search for Rose closes in, how can I keep him safe and keep our secrets hidden?

A gripping and jaw-dropping page-turner with twists to die for. If you love Lisa Jewell, K.L. Slater and Jackie Kabler, you’ll love The Lie.

MY THOUGHTS:

My son said he walked his girlfriend home. But now she is missing...

Lucy and Tom have moved from London to sleepy Surrey with their children Jacob (16) and Ava (12) for a fresh start. Several months after their arrival, they decide to host a barbeque in their backyard for the neighbours and friends. Everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves...but beneath the surface secrets threatened to bubble to the surface.

Jacob had been seeing girlfriend Rose for six months but today she seems to be spending most of her time with Ava. Lucy is too busy hosting to see that Rose's mum is flirting with her husband Tom and he appears to be enjoying the attention. Jacob spends most of the afternoon trying to get Rose's attention while she seems to be spending most of it trying to escape his. Heated words are exchanged and she decides to head home. Jacob offers to see her to her door.

The following morning, Lucy's phone rings. It's Carrie, Rose's mum. Rose didn't come home from the barbeque. Is she there? Jacob was the last one to see her and he insists he walked her home the night before. But now she is missing. And all signs are pointing to Jacob despite there is no evidence against him...yet. So where is Rose?

Over the ensuing days the police search Rose's house and then Lucy and Tom's, having been the last place Rose was seen alive. And her keys are found hidden in the bushes not far from their house. Did she drop them in her rush to escape? Or were they put there by whoever is responsible for her disappearance?

Carrie is certain Rose wouldn't just disappear. Lucy is certain that Jacob had nothing to do with her disappearance. Ava knows Rose was angry with her brother and she is angry with him on her behalf. Tom doesn't know what to believe. But which one of them is lying? Where is Rose? And what happened to her?

The story unfold through the alternating perspectives of the two mothers - Lucy and Carrie - with Rose's narrative told from the beginning right up to the night of the barbeque in progressive form. Nothing is as it seems and there are layers of secrets and lies as each of them holds something back. I didn't warm to Carrie much, though I felt sorry for her in part, but then I found her behaviour somewhat ridiculous and confusing. None of the characters were particularly endearing. I figured out the truth way before there was even an inkling so I wasn't at all shocked...but that could be I'm used to expecting the unexpected from this genre.

Overall, THE LIE is a good solid thriller that does get a little drawn out and I felt it could have been shortened a little. But apart from that, it is a compelling read that will keep you guessing as each layer is peeled back to reveal another more complex secret.

An absolutely addictive and twist-filled psychological thriller that will have you reading late into the night. Perfect for fans of Big Little Lies, Lisa Jewell and T.M. Logan.

MY THOUGHTS:

Four friends. One dream getaway. But who will make it out alive...?

When the gold-rimmed invitations arrive through the mailslots of Simone, Vicky and Hannah, the friends cannot believe it. After all she has done to them, has taken from them and thrown back in their faces, their ex-friend Jodie has the audacity to invite them to an all-expenses-paid four day weekend on a remote island in the Mediterranean to celebrate her birthday...when they all knew her birthday was in November. The four friends have not spoken in two decades since Jodie betrayed them all in the worst way. So why is she inviting them to this weekend escape? And why now? And more importantly, what does she want from them?

The journey to the island takes somewhat longer than expected, drawing out the journey and the story a little. The three friends have to spend the night in an old near-abandoned farmhouse villa which is reminiscent of the forties horror movie sets. But as soon as daylight comes, the friends are down at the jetty awaiting their boat to the island. And when they get there...they discover it just as deserted as the old villa from which they've come. But on a much grander scale. Far more luxurious, each with their own room and ensuites, a fully stocked pantry and fridge, all with gorgeous turquoise views and a mosaic infinity pool. There was just one thing missing: the birthday girl herself, Jodie.

But when Jodie does arrive, she is just as shocked and surprised by the presence of her three former friends. So who invited them all here? Who has orchestrated this entire weekend? And to what end?

With no WiFi, weird messages, missing knives and no way off the island...each begins to wonder if any of them will make it out alive. But one of them is hell bent on revenge...but who? And why?

The concept of this story was intriguing but I think for me the telling of it fell a little flat. It takes almost 30% of the book before they even reach the island and the rest of it to remain as confused as ever as to what is really going on. I am all for multiple narratives but even I got a little confused with the constant changeover between the four friends that I had to keep checking back as to which one of them was narrating at times. Particularly as every chapter was in the first person and somehow I always felt it was Simone's voice I heard every time, even if it was one of the others.

The story is also a slow burn of which I'm not particularly a fan generally unless it is done in a way that does hold my interest. This one hovered between doing so and not. And once they got to the the Isle del Diablo (Devil's Island), all they seemed to do was bitch and moan and argue all the time.

It's an OK read for me and I wasn't totally satisfied with how it all ended. Although it was nicely done in the epilogue, I was left somewhat confused as to where everyone stood and what the whole endgame really was. I was left shaking my head in the end, and somewhat puzzled. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me in the end.

DESCRIPTION:

My life was perfect until she came along. Norah.

Younger, prettier and about to marry my own ex-husband, they are a walking cliché.

I hate her. I hate them both.

She’s taken everything from me – my husband, my life, my home - but I refuse to allow her to take Cassie, my beautiful daughter. That's a step too far.

Now I’ve discovered that Norah plans to have a baby of her own and that causes me no end of problems. She could destroy everything and reveal my deepest, darkest secrets.

That can never be allowed to happen.

No matter what it costs…

A brand new psychological thriller that will keep you guessing till the end! Perfect for fans of Sue Watson, Nina Manning, Shalini Boland

MY THOUGHTS:

This is the third psychological thriller I've read by this exciting duo in the form of "Amanda Rigby". And I've not been disappointed yet. This time I was stumped, hoodwinked, baffled throughout most of the book without a clue as to what was going on and who was really behind it. Until...I really started to puzzle it out. And boy did this dup keep me on my toes! I did work it out before the reveals came and I was too busy giving myself a pat on the back to see that ending coming. Just no.

Alice Hargraves is a recently divorced fortysomething mother of seventeen year old Cassie. She had everything going for her - a wealthy husband, a promising career, a happy marriage...or so she thought. Until Mark dropped his bombshell that he wanted a divorce as he had met young and beautiful Norah and wanted to marry her. OK, so she could live with that...although she did nurse the hope that Mark would soon come to his senses, ditch the younger model and come back to her. But two weeks out from their wedding and that wasn't looking likely.

And then he drops another bombshell. Quite by accident. He and Norah are trying IVF. They are planning to have a baby together. No, this cannot be happening. Suddenly, Norah is threatening to take everything else away from her carefully laid plans and Alice couldn't let that happen. And so what ensues is one bad decision after another which ultimately leads to Alice sitting in a prison cell awaiting trial for murder. How did it come to this? How did she get here?

Meanwhile, Cassie is your typical moody seventeen year old who thinks they know what is best for themselves despite their parents being the better judge of that. This results in a lot of door slamming, flouncing off in a huff, walking out without a word, storming off on a whim and bad - very bad - boyfriend choices. What do parents know? They haven't been their age for like a hundred years...and anyway, it was different for them back then. They wouldn't understand and they don't know Scott like she does. Of course, Cassie has the freedom to bounce back and forth between her father's mansion and her mother's terrace on a whim or whenever one says something she doesn't want to hear. Problem is, dad's house comes with Norah who is just trying too hard to be her new best friend. Whatever. Bring on her gap year when she can escape to Portugal with Scott...if her parents ever agree to it, that is, because how can she afford it without her father's money anyway? And Scott won't go without her...will he? She doesn't need her parents' drama on top of her own so she needs this escape.

And then there is Norah, who has her own secrets. Unbeknownst her, Alice saw her arguing with a face from her past but from what is she hiding? Alice certainly wasn't close enough to hear their conversation but she could see enough to know that it was heated. And then she starts getting text messages from an unknown number blackmailing her with a video from her past into stealing drugs from the hospital where she works as a nurse practitioner in the oncology department. It begins with five boxes, followed by a further ten and then a ridiculous request for thirty! But before she could meet the latest demands, Norah is found dead. Who killed her? And why?

At the halfway point, the story takes a turn and is then told primarily from the detectives POV as they investigate Norah's brutal murder. They think they have the suspect in their crosshairs when they are thrown a curveball and all bets are off. Everything points to Alice. The weapon, the motive, even the opportunity. Alice had a secret to protect at all costs. But is she really guilty?

THE EX WIFE is a stunning psychological and domestic thriller where I turned the pages at the speed of light. The tension was palpable throughout and I was completely baffled as to where this was all headed. I mean, everything really did point to Alice. But who would want to frame her? And why? If you could answer that, then you'd be halfway there. But there is no inkling throughout. Nothing. Until...a slight tiny little chink of light started to peek through. And I grasped it with both hands until I could make sense of it and had all the pieces. And then it hit me! All of it...until the very end. Like I said, I was too busy patting myself on the back to see that ending coming...and I was hugely disappointed with it.

The characters were a mixed bunch that I could take or leave. Alice made a lot of stupid decisions that made her look half crazy, and even stalkerish, but I liked her. I wasn't a fan of Mark purely for the fact that he could so easily dump his wife of fifteen years for a younger woman. And Norah, I didn't much like her for the same reason. Scott was a creep that just slithered around for opportunity - I didn't trust him one bit. And Felix was a little too good to be true.

In a tale that is layer upon layer of secrets, lies and betrayal...and ultimately revenge, THE EX WIFE is an intense and addictive read from start to finish...until the disappointing end which I thought was something of a letdown, all things considered. But one thing is for certain...it will keep you guessing.

REVIEW: Shameful Secrets on Coronation Close by Lizzie Lane

Shameful Secrets on Coronation Close (Coronation Close #2) by Lizzie Lane
Genre: Historical fiction, Pre-WW2, Sagas
Read: 17th April 2023
Published: 20th April 2023

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

There are no secrets that time does not reveal…

Bristol 1937

The year is 1937 and the country is still reeling from the abdication of King Edward the Eighth the year before.

His brother, the Duke of York has become King George the Sixth and will be crowned in May.

The country is on a high. Union Jacks are being dusted off and bunting is being made. Thelma, Jenny and residents of Coronation Close are all a buzz with planning the street parties and celebrations for the great day.

But behind every door shameful secrets and sins linger on Coronation Close, just bubbling to expose themselves…

MY THOUGHTS:

Bristol 1937

Life in Coronation Close was rocked when King Edward VIII abdicated from duty in favour of love and none more so than Thelma Dawson whose royal collection was her pride and joy...after her children, of course. So shocked was she by his betrayal to the crown that she smashed and destroyed any commemorative edition featuring him as King, albeit short-lived.

But now the country has a new King. Albert has stepped up to become King George VI, with his coronation set for 12th May. And preparations are in full swing for a street party in the close with the hope that everything will run smoothly on the day. Thelma has appointed herself as organiser but finds herself overwhelmed when a shocking tragedy befalls her on the evening that her first born, her son George is coming home on leave from the Merchant Navy. She was so focused on getting out the door of Bertram's at six on the dot, so focused on getting home in time to see her son again that she didn't see anything untoward...not even when the bus' gearbox died in a howling blizzard. Not even when the kindly man hook her arm through his to guide her way. Not even then. But she finally made it home and threw her arms around her only son and wept tears of joy at his return...even if just for a few months. But her joy was slightly overshadowed though only Jenny could see it.

Jenny Crawford and her girls had been in Coronation Close for nearly a year and had formed friendships with just about everyone who lived therein. With the exception of "her next door", the curmudgeonly Dorothy Partridge who saw it as her duty to complain to the council at every turn about the goings on within the Close and her abject distaste of it all. Nobody liked Dorothy but accepted her as part of the furniture (so to speak) and they all felt a little sorry for her poor sister Harriet, also widowed. But Harriet has a secret which only Dorothy knows and has kept for over two decades. But what will happen if their secret is suddenly made known?

Jenny's husband Roy was in Palestine in the army and the further away he is, the better. Roy's secret is known only by Jenny but it is one that made him abusive with her on the receiving end of his fists. He has found contentment in the army along with adventure, and Jenny receives his army pension to help support her and the girls in his absence. But lately she has felt restless. It is no secret that Robin Hubert (or is it Godwin? Because the name keeps changing throughout the story) wants to be more than friends but he's still married to Doreen even if she lives a separate life with the children and her rich men friends. And then there is Charlie Talbolt who has taken her out from time to time but there is something just a little bit off about him.

Cath is still just as possessively jealous of Thelma's friendship with Jenny and still gets about in her metal curlers, like Winnie from "Mrs Browns Boys".

Then Thelma gets a shock which proves to be somewhat problematic at both her age and for her life going forward. Particularly in her relationship with Bert, the council rent man. She still hasn't met his mother so it comes as something of a surprise when he rolls into the Close in his car with his mother at the Coronation street party! But just what will his mother think of her, her son's lady friend?

So many secrets and two new families move into the Close in this second installment of Coronation Close and still so many to unravel. While it doesn't end on a cliffhanger, there is one thing that the story was leading up to that didn't eventuate this time round so I'm guessing we'll have to wait and see what happens in the next book. I'm not sure about the new neighbours just yet as we haven't really gotten to know them yet. I'm sure their stories and secrets will come out in the wash soon enough.

In the meantime, I'm hoping for a happy ending for Jenny as well as for Thelma. I thoroughly enjoy this series as the threat of war looms ever closer but not yet touching lives just yet. And I can't wait for the next one!!

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Lizzie Lane is a born and bred Bristolian who now lives in West Wiltshire with her partner, a wonderful garden and a lately acquired allotment. In the past she has bred dogs, kept horses, painted and made models from clay. (Nightly visit from the badger has smashed one).

Working jobs she's hated purely to keep a roof over her family’s head and a meal on the table, she then discovered writing. Encouraged by an American writer friend and when a time came there were no jobs and no other option, she took the plunge. She is now the author of over 50 books, a number of which have been bestsellers. As a Bristolian, many of her family worked in the cigarette and cigar factories, inspiring her new saga series The Tobacco Girls.

Up until six years ago her home (and that of her late husband) was a 46ft sailing yacht named Sarabande Serene, sailing into the Mediterranean. So besides being a successful author Lizzie can read navigation charts and react swiftly in a storm.

Lizzie is now landlocked in a town close to the city of Bath.
