SPOTLIGHT: The Summer Holiday by S.E. Lynes

The Summer Holiday by S.E. Lynes
Genre: Psychological thriller
Read: 8th May 2023
Published: 9th May 2023

DESCRIPTION:

One loving couple. One surprise guest. One week to destroy everything…

When the doorbell rings, I take one last look round the villa. The nuts and olives are in bowls; the white wine is chilling in the fridge; everything is ready for my old college friend, the guest I’m dying to impress.

When I open the door, Coco steps from the dusty street into the cool tiled hall, as effortlessly beautiful as ever. But then her face freezes in horror, her mouth falling open. I turn to see my husband Jeff behind me, his eyes wide, his cheeks pale.

After a moment, they both smile, pretending nothing happened at all. But I know what I saw.

This holiday was meant to rescue my marriage, not ruin it.

But the connection between my friend and my husband isn’t what I thought.

All three of us have something to lose, and something to fight for.

And when the truth comes out, not all of us will survive…

From the no.1 bestselling author S.E. Lynes comes a brilliantly gripping thriller that will have you racing through the pages and gasping out loud at the twists. Fans of Paula Hawkins, Lisa Jewell and Gillian Flynn will love The Summer Holiday.

SPOTLIGHT:

The people closest to you know exactly what you're trying to hide.

The hostess: Kate wants this holiday to be different. It's the first time in years it's just been her and her husband. A chance to walk along the beach, eat ice cream together in the bright Spanish sun, remind each other of why they fell in love. And what better way to start than inviting their glamorous university acquaintance Coco for a drink at their clifftop villa, with it's pristine pool.

The host: Jeff doesn't know why Kate's making such a big deal about their surprise visitor. But if it makes her happy, that's fine. He wants her to be happy. He'll never tell her what he did to ensure it....

The guest: when Coco steps from the dusty street into the cool tiled hall, she has an idea what she's about to see. As Jeff comes down the stairs, he freezes in horror.

One innocent invitation could cost everything.

MY THOUGHTS:

The love of your life? Or your worst nightmare?

I began this review earlier today (having given up after 40%) with one train of thought only to go back and finish the book and thus change my opinion. As the pace was so slow it was glacial as was the chill I felt whenever I was in sneaky Naomi's presence, it did pick up...but not until about 50%. Normally, I wouldn't go back and finish a book I had just reviewed as unable to get through but I know Susie is capable of some thrilling tales and I  kind of wanted to find out what actually happened.

Sam is a sucker for a sob story and when he runs into his ex, Naomi, one day after leaving her the year before prior to the UK's first COVID lockdown he is shocked to see she has a baby in tow. But never fear, she is just looking after the little tyke for her friend. At least that's what she tells Sam but he's not stupid. He sees the resemblance, the fair hair, the blue eyes...he knows. He goes home to his gran Joyce with whom he's been living since he walked out on Naomi (for good reason, I might add) and regales her with the impromptu meeting. Joyce warns him to be careful where that girl is concerned but Sam just has to know - is Tommy his baby?

And so he texts Naomi to meet up, casual like. But she is not stupid either. She knows that's exactly what he'll do and so she sets about playing him like a fiddle. At first she denies Tommy is his but then about faces and admits that he is. They then agree to daytime access once a week, when he has to rework his work schedule to accommodate the princess as she calls the shots. Whilst she has agreed to access amicably, she could also quite easily take it away again, using Tommy as leverage in her quest to snag Sam's affections once again. Meanwhile poor Sam is decorating a nursery in his gran's house especially for Tommy when he is (finally) allowed to stay over. He has taken to fatherhood like a fish to water and he is loving every minute of it...for all the 8 hours Naomi deems to allow him at first.

Sam is convinced that Naomi is a changed woman. That motherhood has mellowed her. Even Joyce's opinion of her grandson's "ex-ex" was turned around. But is that the face she just wants him to see? He forgets the pain she caused him and the reasons why he left. She still articulates his every fault and how he made her angry, excusing her appalling outbursts and behaviour, when he could only respond with silence. He never knew what to say to her. I get that. But she took it as a personal attack and a year later never fails to remind him of that in her oh so subtle way. And Sam, still under her spell, bows to her in agreement seeing the error of his ways. Seriously? The woman blows hot and cold and poor Sam never knows which temperature he's going to get. Her underhand and subtle gaslighting manipulates him into constantly second guessing himself. She did that! And a year later, she still is! But this time with a smile not sarcasm in her tone. But it's still there.

But Sam is smitten. Case closed. With his gran's ring she gifted him to give Naomi, Sam gets down on bended knee and proposes. He wants to be a family and he wants that with Naomi and Tommy. And so they begin to plan their future together. Now that he had found and rekindled the love of his life, what could possibly go wrong?

The story unfolds through the narrative of Miranda who retells it as Sam's story with letters from Naomi (to Sam) peppered throughout. It is through these letters that I can see the subtle gaslighting, the manipulation and the emotional abuse. She knows exactly what she is doing and she dangles the silent threat in the form of words that she may or may not give to him.

When I began this review earlier, I didn't think the story had gone anywhere. That it was just more of Sam jumping through Naomi's hoops. But I wanted to know what Sam had done and why and I do enjoy Susie's thrillers so I went back and (admittedly) skipped a few chapters to where it started to get interesting and pick up pace. From there I was hooked. And I flew through the rest of the pages until the final truth was revealed. And wow! Just wow!

One thing was for sure...I HATED Naomi. With a passion. She was up to something...I just know she was. Was she stringing Sam along for her own gain before revealing her true colours again? Maybe? Maybe she truly loved him. But one thing is for sure...she is toxic. Their relationship is toxic. And yet she still had the power to lure him into her web once again and keep him entangled there. Because he is a good guy. He sees and believes the best in people.

While slow burns are not my style, preferring to be thrust into the deep end from the beginning and being catapulted through the rest of it, THE EX did in fact pick up its pace ten-fold at the halfway mark. In my opinion, that is too long to keep readers waiting for the good stuff...unless they like that style. Susie does have a penchant for slow burns but this was pretty glacial to begin with for quite some time.

The style in which THE EX is written is very different which I admit to finding confusing at first but once I got used to it I could follow the format. It was the slow pace that had me stumped. And while that was ALMOST enough to make me give up, I'm glad I did go back and pick it up again because it did indeed get better. It is predictable but that doesn't spoil the enjoyment for me...the slow pace in the first half did that. But in the second half, it ended up being an intriguing and enjoyable read.

I would like to thank #SELynes, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheEx in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Baby Shower by S.E. Lynes

The Baby Shower by S.E. Lynes
Genre: Domestic thriller, Psychological thriller, Psychological drama, Suspense
Read: 25th February 2022
Audio:
Published: 1st March 2022

★★★★★ 5 stars
DESCRIPTION:

She doesn’t know I’m there, watching her in the mirror. She slides her hand under her blouse. And then I see something impossible. She isn’t pregnant…

She bursts into my life like a storm, and nothing is the same again. She seems so perfect, with her lilting laugh and her beautiful face. One by one, I watch as my friends fall under her spell.

Only I seem to suspect something. Only I see that her smiles don’t reach her cold, furious eyes. And when I’m accused of things I didn’t do, when my home is vandalized, I know she’s behind it. But she only lets her mask slip when no one is looking, so if I say anything, I’ll look crazy.

So when the baby shower comes around I’m there, sitting on a velvet sofa in a posh hotel room, surrounded by balloons. We share gifts, we pour small glasses of champagne, and she beams, her bump just visible under her bright red shirt.

But that afternoon, I finally learn the unbelievable truth.

There is no baby…

A stunningly twisty story of toxic female friendships, guilt and lies from S.E. Lynes, author of the no.1 bestseller The Housewarming. If you like Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn and Paula Hawkins, you’ll be glued to The Baby Shower.

MY REVIEW:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for S.E. Lynes' addictive new domestic thriller THE BABY SHOWER.

OMG...this book is like a tornado! A storm that unleashes a tsunami of emotions, wreaking havoc for the duration and leaving a trail of detritus in its wake. But no meterologist could predict the damage Hurricane Lexie would bring. I wasn't even ready for it and I was expecting it! The woman is a nightmare! And she is one thing I hate...toxic.

It all starts with a watch. But not just any watch. An expensive £3000 Breitling that Frankie buys with the proceeds of a win on the scratchies. Instead of adding it to "the jar" towards their dream of a world trip, the coveted Breitling puts Frankie in a league with his friends who sport Tag Hauers, making him feel invincible. But as the old adage goes...be careful what you wish for. For the Breitling is only the start of things to come.

Jane Preston is married to Frankie Reece and, feminist that she is, kept her name as a nod to the sisterhood of independent women the world over. She has built a lucrative coffee shop from the ground up and despite being a trained accountant, Frankie retrained as a heating engineer and has his own successful plumbing business. The couple are happy and yet their lives are tinged with a little sadness for what could never be. But still, they have each other. And their friends.

When her best friend Sophie tentatively announces she is pregnant, Jane goes through a gamut of emotions. She is happy for Sophie but devastated for herself. She shares nothing of her feelings with her other two friends Hils and Kathy, who are older and have "been there, done that, got the t-shirt" with regards to children. She doesn't even confide in Frankie at first, giving him only the bare minimum of details so as to spare his feelings. As far as things go, Jane is coping relatively well with the news...until Lexie Lane shows up.

Young, vibrant and totally new, Lexie is invited to their weekly running group Running Beans and subsequently their Friday night drinks at the pub after meeting Sophie at the gym. Obviously used to being the centre of attention, Lexie dominates the conversation as well as Sophie leaving Jane feeling a little left out. But Sophie is doing what Sophie does...taking the newbie under her wing and making her feel welcome just as did with her all those years ago. But then Sophie doesn't catch the momentary glare directed at Jane. She doesn't see the looks, the smirks or the veiled whispers meant only for Jane. Sophie only sees what Lexie wants her to see, leaving Jane in a quandary. Does she say something and risk further wrath? Or does she just lay low and avoid Lexie's love-bombing as much as she can?

And then the following week, Lexie has some news of her own. She too is expecting as Sophie squeals with delight that the two of them are pregnant together. Inevitably the two women bond and the closer Sophie and Lexie grow, the more certain Jane is that Lexie is trying to drive a wedge between her and her best friend. To say something now will only make her seem jealous.

Things come to a head when Lexie throws a joint baby shower for her and Sophie. But not just any baby shower...a £4000 a night plus extras at the Ritz! Only the best for Sophie who was robbed of the chance of a baby shower the first time round. Not wanting to put herself through more of "the Sophie and Lexie show", Jane forces herself to be there for her friend who seems to be slipping further and further away from her. But things go from bad to worse from the beginning, orchestrated by Lexie to throw Jane in a bad light. Forcing herself to endure the whole thing for Sophie's sake with the help of an entire bottle of Bach's Rescue Remedy and liquid courage, she then excuses herself to go to the bathroom for some time out and to regroup. But then she overhears a heated phone conversation Lexie is having with her apparently devoted boyfriend which sounds more demanding than loved-up. And then she sees something impossible and that's when she knows...Lexie isn't pregnant! Unable to stomach any more, Jane makes her escape rushing home in tears.

Meanwhile, Frankie has his own problems going on which all started with that wretched watch. Whilst busy fixing bathrooms and toilets, things go from bad to worse when he just seems to be sinking further and further into the proverbial s***! He works longer and longer hours and the once happy couple are more like ships passing in the night. Jane becomes concerned for her husband particularly when he doesn't appear to be himself.

Peppered throughout are the interspersed chapters of an unnamed woman in hospital having been involved in a hit and run. We know there were three people involved but as to who they are and how it all eventuated is not made clear until towards the end. There were some clues drip-fed throughout which I picked up on immediately.

Admittedly, I saw all the twists coming and guessed them long before they were revealed but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of this twisted tale of revenge. Yes, Lexie got under my skin but surprisingly, not as much as Sophie did. Sophie, who has known Jane and been her best friend for years; who took the word of the relatively unknown Lexie over her long established friendship with Jane; who believed Lexie rather than her best friend; who was basically willing to ditch that long standing friendship with her best friend in favour of someone new. Sophie's behaviour angered me that she could take the word of someone she's known five minutes over her best friend, and then to confront Jane citing her as the "bad guy". What is wrong with this woman? If that's how she treats her friends then Jane was better off without her. Sophie was welcome to Lexie, in my opinion, and vice versa.

But I loved Jane and Frankie. They were sweet and solid...and so not ready for Hurricane Lexie. I would have loved to see a little more banter with Hils and Kath, particularly where Lexie and Sophie were concerned, but I also understood Jane's reasoning behind why she wouldn't engage in such. But what there was, I enjoyed. I love dry wit and wry humour and this book was filled with it, despite it tapering off as the impact of what was happening began to take affect. And a shout out to the adoreable Des who is not as stupid as his humans think him to be...

A slow-build at first, THE BABY SHOWER is a fast paced thriller about toxic friendships and revenge. Addictive and unputdownable, this twisted tale kept me up long into the night and the wee hours until I finally finished it at 5am.

When I started this book, I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did...considering it featured toxic women, which I loathe and really gets under my skin. I don't care that it was predictable or that I guessed every twist coming. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish and, for me, that's what it's all about. The ride; the thrill of the chase; the adrenaline. I loved it. One of my favourite Susie Lynes books to date, I should think.

A deliciously dark tale, THE BABY SHOWER is very hard to put down and is perfect for fans of domestic or psychological thrillers who love tense twisted tales highlighting the toxicity in female friendships.

I would like to thank #SELynes, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheBabyShower in exchange for an honest review.

Her Sister's Secret by S.E. Lynes
(previously titled: "The One to Blame")
Genre: Psychological thriller, Psychological drama, Suspense

Published: 13th July 2021

★★★★★ 4.5 stars (rounded up)

They just hear the sirens that break the silence of the night and see the flames that rise against the dark sky.

A brilliantly twisty tale of family secrets and the darkness that can lie behind closed doors, Her Sister's Secret will keep you turning the pages till the final devastating revelation. Fans of Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn and Louise Candlish will love it.

MY REVIEW:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for S.E. Lynes' latest thriller HER SISTER'S SECRET (previously titled "The One to Blame").

In the past, I have found Susie Lynes to be hit or miss as her books are more of a slow burn of which I am not generally a huge fan. But...I have to say, that slow burning tension that her thrillers have simmering throughout just explodes in such a way that only she can excel at. Her books are some I never thought I would enjoy but Susie has mastered the slow burn in such a way that she keeps you enthralled throughout. And HER SISTER'S SECRET is proof that she just gets better and better.

Isla and Annie Andrews are two sisters that couldn't be more different. Growing up in the Scottish highlands in Inverary by strict and conservative parents, Isla is sensible, practical and prudent whilst Annie is wild, untamed and carefree. For many years Isla looked up to her older sister until she became the seemingly elder of the two. At 10 years old, she was wise beyond her years when 15 year old Annie woke her in tears one night to tell her she was pregnant. Instead of "fixing her problem", their parents set Annie up in a flat above their gift shop where she was to live with her newborn son Callum necessitating the fact that she must face her responsibilities and that with every decision there are consequences with which one must live. And there she and Callum lived happily for the first 11 years of his life.

And then she met Dom.

Isla had been away at uni and had returned home to scale the mountains the two sisters had always promised themselves they would but so far hadn't. Callum was with his granny and granddad, who doted on him, whilst the sisters were away for the weekend. Annie was charmed almost at once by Dominic who was on a boys weekend away with his two friends, doctor Gavin and barrister Tom. They talked long into the night and continued to correspond by phone and letter despite the long distance between them. Isla, the more sensible of the two, tried warning her sister to be careful but Annie was swept away by his charm and feelings she had never felt before.

Two years later they married and Dom whisked Annie and Callum away to their new home in Dorset.

Eleven years later, Isla returns from a night out to her flat in London and the ringing of the telephone, despite it being gone 1am. Wondering who could be calling at such an hour, she almost slurs her greeting but is immediately sobered by the frantic voice on the other end of the line. It's Callum. Her sister Annie and husband Dominic have been killed in a fire. No...not Annie. Almost immediately, Isla makes the journey to Dorset to support her nephew Cal, now her only living relative. But upon arrival she finds the place swarming with police and a wealth of unanswered questions.

Consumed with grief, Isla must now face the fact that not only is her beloved sister dead but that she had kept many secrets about her life from her. But why? She was her sister. She would have listened to her, been there for her. Why did Annie not confide in her what life with Dom was truly like? And then to make matters worse, Cal is arrested and charged with Annie's murder. Not Dom's...his mother's. But that is ludicrous. Cal and Annie were close. There is no way on earth he would harm his mother. Ever.

Over the next four months from the time of Annie's death to the trial in which Cal stands for her murder, Isla tries to make sense of what really happened that night and events leading up to it. She befriends Annie's best friend Daisy and close friend Jan whilst systematically uncovering the truth about Dom, his appalling treatment of Annie and their tempestuous marriage. The man who had charmed his way into her sister's life, who had seemingly doted on her, who had swept away to the other end of the country...had left her to look after his business and keep house while he did...what, exactly? Isla felt an inordinate amount of guilt for not keeping in regular touch with her sister and had she done so, feels she may have seen what was really happening and rescued her. She could have saved her. And Annie might still be alive today.

But Annie saw Dom as her way out of Inverary. And that despite her unhappiness, she'd made her bed and now she must lie in it...as her sister's voice echoed in her head - "Och, wheesht and get oan wae it!"

In the midst of all the secrets and lies, will Isla be able to uncover the truth before it's too late? And when she does, what will the future hold for her? Or for Cal, even?

What a fantastic read HER SISTER'S SECRET is! It's edge of your seat thrills and slow burn suspense that is palpable throughout right up to the courtroom drama that drips tension from start to finish. The grief, the secrets, the lies - every moment grips you as slowly the mystery is stripped away.

The portrayal of the tempestuous marriage between Annie and Dom is expertly carved - from the moment the charismatic bully masquerading as a romantic free spirit seduces the younger woman trapped in a small community in the highlands to the horrific aftermath of what essentially was an abusive situation. The flattery, the charm, the compliments that were really put downs, the manipulation and gas-lighting...Annie merely swapped one prison for another. Dom was pretty much a man-child who was spoilt and wanted to have his cake and eat it too. And if he didn't, he would behave like a spoilt child, over indulged by his parents and believing it was his right to get exactly what he wants when he wants. My heart broke for Annie but at the same time you could see her strength shine through even when Dom was at his cruelest. And when her art studio that Dom had once built especially for her burnt to the ground in a mass of turps, white spirit and candles...Isla found herself questioning which one of them was to blame.

HER SISTER'S SECRET is an enjoyable read filled with suspense and a palpable tension. And then there is the twist. But I wasn't to be hoodwinked or surprised by it because I had worked it out long before it was revealed. Little clues I had picked up that Susie had peppered throughout remained at the forefront of my mind that I had already guessed the twist that was to come...but it didn't spoil it for me. I love trying to work it out and even more so when I am proved correct. Three little (big) clues...can you spot them?

Cleverly told by Isla in the present with flashbacks from both Annie and Isla, HER SISTER'S SECRET is tense, compelling and brilliantly structured that will keep you guessing until the end. Susie has a way of creating intense characters, some of whom you will love to hate....and stories that will linger long after you have finished.

I definitely recommend this intriguing thriller which is perfect for fans of well constructed slow burns that continue to simmer beneath the surface throughout.

I would like to thank #SELynes, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #HerSistersSecret in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: Can You See Her? by S.E. Lynes

Can You See Her? By S.E. Lynes
Genre: Psychological thriller, domestic thriller, Suspense
Read: 21st August 2020
Published: 22nd April 2020

★★★★★ 4.5 stars (rounded up)

DESCRIPTION:

Rachel doesn’t understand how her life has changed so completely. When she was younger, heads would turn when she walked into a room. Her children needed her; her husband adored her.

But somehow the years wore that all away. She was so busy raising her children, looking after her parents… She can barely remember the woman she used to be, the one whose husband told her she was out of his league. The woman she is now just does the laundry and makes the dinner, and can walk into a room without anyone knowing she’s there.

She knows that she hated feeling invisible. She knows that she thought: what would it take for you to see me again?

And now she’s worried that she did something terrible. Because she’s sitting in a room, being asked whether she killed someone.

When no-one is watching, you can get away with anything…

Can You See Her? is an utterly compelling and unputdownable psychological thriller, about how far you can push a woman before she will break. Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, A.J. Finn and The Silent Patient.

MY REVIEW:

"There are things I don't know. But I know people are dead, I know I killed them and I know it all started the day I realised I was invisible."

Rachel Edwards is invisible. Well, she thinks she is. When she was younger, heads would turn when she walked into a room. Her husband Mark had always said she was out of his league. And she had great relationships with her two beautiful children, Keiron and Katie.

So when did Rachel become "invisible"?

With Keiron away at uni and Katie taking a gap year, Rachel's life consists of working at the pub and the caretaker of her family at home. When daughter Katie has her 18th birthday party of "just 10 friends" which then turned into at least twenty, Rachel walks into the room and realises everyone is totally oblivious to her presence. She's past her prime, heads no longer turn, she's no one.

She's become invisible.

Her husband of 27 years doesn't even look at her anymore, barely even speaks to her. Katie spends most of her time in her room, deaf to her mother's voice...unless food is involved. But neither of them can be arsed to set the table, warm the plates, hang the washing or even flip the switch to turn on the heating while she's out getting fish and chips for tea. No, those tasks are left completely up to her as she is simply the wife and mother, the caretaker for her now unappreciative family.

Becoming obsessed with the spate of knife attacks happening near her home, Rachel begins a scrapbook or sort with clippings of all the victims and their stories. In the hope that she can approach their MP to get the police to do more about these crimes in the area. And yet...she's invisible. Maybe she should take matters into her own hands? After all, she's invisible...

And if she was invisible, if no one else can see her, she could get away with murder. Couldn't she?

Then Rachel starts taking walks at night with their dog Archie and meets people she feels she identifies with and can understand them. She feels their pain and makes connections with them. At last she is not invisible. Not to these people at least. But then these people are found dead or badly injured within a few minutes of meeting her...and Rachel wonders, did she do this?

Now Rachel is in a locked room with forensic psychiatrist Amanda "blue eyes" Frost, detailing all that her life has become and the crimes she has no memory of committing...and yet she must have. Police question her husband Mark, daughter Katie, best friend Lisa and new neighbour Ingrid as they try to determine what is really going on.

It was evident that Rachel was struggling. But was it her sanity? Was she unstable? Or was it just menopause? The internal anger and rage she would feel as her family paid her no attention and basically just took her for granted. And then to make matters worse she began to suspect Mark of having an affair with...Ingrid? Lisa? Or both? How could Mark do this to her? How could Lisa? After all, she knows she is no longer the beauty she once was but to ditch her for the floaty blonde piece next door or her best friend...how could they? Or was Rachel just delusional and imagining things?

Of course there is so much more, much much more to this story that I have barely touched the surface. CAN YOU SEE HER? is an original and thought provoking slow burning psychological thriller about feelings of self worth, jealousy, revenge and menopause. With a touch of humour peppered throughout Rachel' narrative. I laughed when her husband Mark referred to  her mood being down to her "hormonal whatsits".

CAN YOU SEE HER? is primarily narrated by Rachel in her sessions with the forensic psychiatrist - both in dialogue and the thoughts she doesn't openly share. There are alternating chapters throughout in the form of police interview excerpts with Mark, Katie, Lisa and Ingrid as slowly a picture begins to build of what may or may not have happened.

But nothing will prepare you for the shocking triple twist ending that is quite outstanding that not even I saw coming...on any count! It was sheer brilliance on Susie Lynes' part that makes this truly emotive tale such an intriguing read that, despite the slow burn, I could not put down.

My third book by Lynes, CAN YOU SEE HER? is thought provoking, emotive and even heartbreaking as each twist is revealed. Sheer brilliance.

REVIEW: The Lies We Hide by S.E. Lynes (ARC)

The Lies We Hide by S.E. Lynes
Genre: Suspense, Domestic drama, Chick Lit
Read: 20th January 2020
Purchase: Amazon
(publication date: 4th December 2019)

★★★ 3.5 stars

I really should have paid more attention to the genre when requesting this book. But to be honest, all I saw was the name S.E. Lynes and quickly (and incorrectly) assumed it was another psychological thriller, that the author is synonymous for. Instead THE LIES WE HIDE is a somewhat dark family drama more in line with chick lit genre. But don't be fooled - it is not a "feel good" fiction story. It is dark, evocative and even a little gritty.

1968: The story opens with a young teenage couple, Carol and Ted, at fairground in Blackpool. It soon becomes clear that Carol is pregnant, judging from her refusal to accompany Ted on one of the more adrenaline-fueled rides, where Ted then dramatically yells out a proposal to her. And so Carol's story begins.

1984: Carol returns home from a friend's wedding to find her brother sleeping on the couch and her husband Ted in a drunken stupor on the bed. Her two children, Graham and Nicola (Nicky), are thankfully asleep. Carol takes the opportunity to enjoy a nice long soak in the bath after what turned out to be a rather eventful night. Then...

"A creak on the landing. She curls up. The water swishes loud in the tub; she cringes at the noise. Ted. He's woken up. He's woken up and he's-

The bathroom door flies open. Ted. Eyes bloodshot and wild, blind but seeing, a look full of hate aimed only at her. His nose wrinkles, his hand shoots out in front of him, a starfish of fingers. She shrieks, folds herself smaller still, arms over her head, eyes closed. The smell of whisky goes up her nose, whisky and smoke, sweat and pubs. This is it. She has not got away with it. The punishment is now."

Carol made herself a promise to herself as Ted shoved her face underwater, holding here there until she was barely conscious. She has just enough strength to gather the thought - "If I survive tonight, this is it. We're leaving." When it was all over, trembling and in pain, Carol crawled out of the bath. Gathering her remaining strength, she then woke her sleeping children, packed up their lives and left Ted and his violent drunken abuse behind.

2019: Nicola is now a successful London barrister returning to her family home in Merseyside to attend her mother's funeral. In the ensuing days, she reflects back on the life she shared with her mother and older brother Graham. She remembers the sacrifices her mother made for them, ensuring her daughter received a good education even while her son had fallen through the cracks to become a stranger to them both.

The night they fled  their father changed everything for them...but especially Graham. He became withdrawn, silent and moody...no longer stuttering because he hardly ever spoke to them. Nicola recalled how she missed her older brother in those dark days as he continued to withdraw from them. More and more he snuck out at night, taking up with a rough crowd, smoking weed until eventually even that wasn't enough and he needed the harder drugs to escape the guilt and the shadows that followed him. Even her mother sacrificing her own happiness with someone who truly loved her and wanted to take care of her, in the hope her son would somehow find his way back to them wasn't enough.

Jim Mackay, a lovable gentle giant of a man, first set eyes on Carol at that wedding decked out in full Scottish regalia. Carol immediately felt something deep within as she danced in Jim's arms...and felt a frisson of excitement at his touch. She knew he was different. But she also knew that what he wanted, what she wanted, was forbidden. Ted would kill her. As it happens, he very nearly did when she returned home that night...and in the days, weeks and months she wondered if Jim ever thought of her as she did him. So when he turned up a year later at their new home, Graham was furious at the intrusion and somehow perceived Jim as a threat. Jim stayed a week before Carol asked him to leave, in an attempt to reach out to her son.

Then one night shortly after Jim's departure, the police knocked at Carol's door. A body had been found beaten to death outside a pub frequented by her estranged husband. It was Ted. Torn in her grief for the man he used to be, Carol was relieved at no longer fearing he would find her and carry out his threat to kill her. Shortly after, Carol, Nicky and Graham moved back to the house that had been their home for so long.

But this is not the end. Carol's story, and Nicola's and Graham's - their stories were only just beginning.

Told from three different perspectives in the past and the present, we see into the very hidden depths of our three narrators' souls - Nicola in the present, with the earlier narratives by Carol and Richard, the prison chaplain who helped Graham find his wings so he could truly fly upon release. Each of them reveal secrets about themselves privy only to the reader, their guilt, their shame, their heartache, their grief. Parts of their narratives are incredibly raw and so emotional it is hard not to shed a tear. Each of them are flawed but that is what makes them so real.

Complex and evocative, THE LIES WE HIDE is about a family and their secrets, their suffering, their heartache and their pain. It is about the scars that domestic abuse leaves behind, long after the threat has gone. The story is riddled with guilt and shame which is at the forefront of much of this incredibly sad tale. Whilst also woven into the tapestry is grief. Reading Nicola's raw and heartbreaking grief at the loss of her mother, her guilt at not being there at the end, is so powerful so heartbreaking I was in tears. Her pain is so evident I could reach out and touch it myself.

A well-written heartbreaking tale, THE LIES WE HIDE is not a fast paced read but it is a good one. It evoked a wealth of emotions as the story progressed that it was so easy to relate to each of the characters. You sympathised and yet you felt anger amidst heartbreak and grief. By the end, I had suspected one of the twists all along and had an inkling about the other. But the biggest shock were the secrets (ok, so I suspected one) they each kept to themselves at the end in the lies that they hid from each other...that left me with a feeling of sadness interwoven with understanding.

I have to mention Graham's poem to Richard. Whilst it was a lighthearted attempt at deep heartfelt gratitude, I found myself in tears reading the depth of emotion within those few lines.

THE LIES WE HIDE is not just about abuse and despair, but about a mother's unconditional love for her children and her determination to give them a better life free of fear and dread. It's about love, redemption, forgiveness and moving on.

While I may have begun this book anticipating a psychological thriller, I was glad I read it. It certainly wasn't what I expected.

REVIEW: Mother by S.E. Lynes

Mother by S.E. Lynes
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Read: 28th September 2018 (could not finish)
Purchase: Amazon

★ 0-1 stars

The synopsis for this book sounded incredibly intriguing but sadly it did not follow through. I have no idea what was happening as there is an unknown person narrating for much of the book. According to several reviews there are a couple of other POVs as well but from where I was sitting there was only the one. And I had no idea who it was or how they related to Christopher. At first I thought it was his birth mother, then I thought a psychologist (judging by some of the questions) but whoever it was seemed to be hospitalised. I have no idea at any rate.

I was disappointed because I really did want to delve into Christopher's past and discover more about him and how he truly fit in. But after 10% of trying to grasp the confusing storyline, I gave up. For me, if a book doesn't grab me that far in without any promise then it's just time to move on to something that will hold my attention.

One review I read said that there were three POVs - Christopher's, Ben's (whoever that is) and the unknown narrator. But the confusing thing was that when the POV shifted, there was no warning and no indication who was narrating. I guess you just figured it out as you read. I don't like that. Each POV, in my opinion, should be titled for easy reading and flow. So when I read that, I lost what little interest I had in continuing.

It is disappointing as it was the first of S.E. Lynes' books I had tried and unfortunately it doesn't give me much hope for her others. Having said that, I WILL try another book by the same author down the track and see how that goes, but as for this? Far too confusing to work out exactly what was going on, who was who and where it all fit in.
