REVIEW: Cuckoo in the Nest by Diane Saxon

Cuckoo in the Nest by Diane Saxon
Genre: Psychological thriller
Read: 20th August 2025
Published: 12th August 2025

★★★ 3 stars

DESCRIPTION:

What secrets lie within?

I've moved into a shared house. My three new housemates aren't just reserved, there's a distinct chill in the air, an unspoken tension that makes me uneasy.

I'm not here to make friends, though.

I have my own secrets.

Nikki is like a sister to me and I'm here to find out what happened to her.

Where is she?

I'm convinced someone knows more than they're letting on. Is she simply missing? Or has something far more sinister occurred within these walls?

I'm not leaving until I find out if Nikki is alive or dead.

Diane Saxon's heart-pounding novel is perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Valerie Keogh and TM Logan.

MY THOUGHTS:

One house...four tenants...one deadly secret...

I honestly don't know where to start with this one. I always enjoy Diane Saxon's thrillers but this one just left me feeling like something was constantly crawling on my skin. It was seriously creepy and uncomfortable which I guess was the aim of the story but I was just too creeped out and hated every person in the houseshare. They were all self-obsessed and arrogant prats. One rule for them and another for everyone else. And the end result was survival of the fittest. But then, it was about a cuckoo in the nest which is always an uncomfortable read.

I was more drawn in by the past timeline when Alex and Nikki were young and then teenagers growing up. I felt there was more to the story there and I was more invested in that than the one in the present day timeline.

In the present day, Alex has just moved into a houseshare with two females and one male - none of whom are considerate and all equally selfish. The only reason he is there is to uncover what happened to his friend Nikki who was their housemate previously and had mysteriously disappeared. The police had her down as having left of her own accord; she's old enough and just packed up and moved on. But Alex knows different. Nikki wouldn't leave her mum without a word. Besides, she had planned on moving back home with her. So where has she gone?

The alternating chapters in between begin in 2003 and 2004 with a few from Nikki's narrative in 2013 and 2014. They tell of Alex's harrowing story as a child, neglected and abused by his father before meeting sunny young Nikki at the playground one day and though she was five years his junior, they became firm friends - a friendship that lasted a lifetime. Alex is a genuine likeable character, despite his upbringing. Nikki is a delight also, but she features mainly in the past chapters so we get her either as a giggly little five year old or a giggly fifteen year old.

The story is journey through Alex's harrowing upbringing, finding a family who love and care for him right up to him in adulthood. As the story unravels and things begin to slot into place, we find him navigating a mystery that only he can unravel. And be Nikki's hero once again.

The pacing for this one was somewhat slower than Saxon's more pacier thrillers. And the unlikeable characters made it hard to connect with the story. If it weren't for Alex, Nikki and Julia, I probably would have shelved it without finishing...but for them, they made the journey worthwhile and I'm glad I stuck it out. The ending is rather shocking and unexpected to say the least! But I shouldn't be surprised as it is Saxon.

I would like to thank #DianeSaxon, #Netgalley and #BoldwoodBooks for an ARC of #CuckooInTheNest in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Quiet Wife by Diane Saxon

The Quiet Wife by Diane Saxon
Genre: Psychological thriller
Read: 18th February 2025
Published: 20th February 2025

★★★★★ 4.5 stars (rounded up)

DESCRIPTION:

I want to be ordinary. To fade into the shadows where no one notices me and live a quiet life. A normal life.

But I am not ordinary. Not anymore.

I’ve been keeping a secret. From my colleagues, my friends and most importantly, my husband - who knows nothing of my past life.

Twenty years ago, at college, a boy became obsessed with me. Craig Lane believed he could make me love him back if he just tried harder. When I rejected him, he did something so horrifying, it’s the stuff of nightmares. All my nightmares.

Now I’ve been informed by Victim Support Services, that boy - now a man - has been released from prison. The news terrifies me.

Am I safe? Or does Craig still carry the same obsession he did when we were seventeen? I don’t know. I’ve ignored every letter he’s ever sent me.

Now strange things have started to happen: flowers have been left on my doorstep, my cat keeps going missing. Someone is watching me. Knows where I live. I am sure.

Worse, something even more sinister could be stalking me from the shadows. Because I have another secret...

My past is coming to get me. One way or another.

MY THOUGHTS:

Trigger warning: rape, sexual assault and stalking

A secret past that comes back to haunt her...

I wasn't sure what to expect from the rather demure title but it certainly wasn't this! What a rollercoaster of a ride this dark and disturbing tale of obsession is.

Soriah is a quiet wife living the quiet life with her husband Marcus. But her life is thrown into turmoil when she receives a letter from Victim Support Services. And suddenly, her past come rushing back to haunt her all over again. The nightmares, the claustrophobia, the sleeplessness, the fear, the panic attacks...all relative to a deep dark secret from her past. Something she has barely shared with Marcus, not that he'd show any interest anyway. But she's never really completely trusted another man again - not after what happened to her over twenty years ago.

When she was seventeen, Soriah survived a terrible ordeal after becoming the obsession of another student. Despite her protests that she wasn't interested, he persisted - mainly at the insistence of her best friend Gilly. And then one night, she was kidnapped and held for days while starved and raped repeatedly...all while he was professing his undying love for her. Soriah vowed she would never trust another man again.

Now two decades later, Craig is being released and Soriah is beside herself with panic. Suddenly flowers are being left on her doorstep and text messages from an unknown number. It could only be Craig. But how does he know where she lives? How does he know her number? And surely it's a breach of his licence that he even comes near her, let alone contact her? Soriah, who has never let anyone else remotely close to her in all these years, has no idea who to turn to. Who can she trust? Her family? But they have their own worries, so she doesn't want to trouble them.

Then when Marcus goes away for a work event, she begins to get the sense she is being watched. Items disappearing from her house. Her key safe unlocked. Luna being locked in the one place Soriah would never open. Is she losing her mind? Or is someone out there watching her again?

The story unfolds in the past and present between Soriah, Craig and an unknown narrator calling themselves "the Fox". It was interesting reading Craig's narrative, as entitled and arrogant as it were. And none of the characters were at all endearing. In fact, I found the story rather depressing for the first several chapters as all Soriah seemed to do was lament about her past or about Marcus and how little he seemed to care for her. Craig's behaviour was delusional and Gilly was a complete b****. Again, none of them were at all endearing. Except maybe for Soriah's parents but they didn't play a huge part. Then when things started to pick up, those chapters were indeed harrowing reading, both chilling and disturbing. It's these that will be triggering for some, hence my warning above.

Diane Saxon has the ability to pen a tense yet gripping tale that is as real as it is shocking. She keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout despite predictability (though that could just be me knowing what to look out for and suspect) and leave you wanting more. I devoured this book in a day, such was its fast pace.

Another entertaining thriller taking the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions and leaving you breathless by its end.

REVIEW: The Stepson by Diane Saxon

The Stepson by Diane Saxon
Genre: Domestic thriller, Domestic drama, Suspense
Read: 9th July 2023
Published: 19th June 2023

★★★★ 4.5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

When your whole life becomes one big lie…
The night my mum disappeared, after a panicked 3am phone, I knew something was wrong.

The police tried to reassure me. There had to be a logical explanation they said – perhaps she’s taking a break after the tragic death of my father.

But I know my mum.

Or do I?

She would never leave without telling me.

Or would she?

The harder I look, the more I discover deep, dark family secrets I was not privy too.

Worrying secrets I was ever meant to know.

Which means my parents have lied to me my whole life.

But why?

Who can I turn too? Trust?

Who is friend and who is foe?

Were they scared of something in their past?

Or were they trying to protect me?

Has mum gone of her own free will?

Or has someone taken her?

Diane Saxon’s compelling new thriller will have you questioning who you can trust to keep your family safe.

MY THOUGHTS:

Who do you believe...and who do you trust...?

It's 3.25am when Lorraine receives a phone call from her frantic mum. The words she utters at first she thinks the result of a few drinks to drown her depression after the tragic loss off her dad, Henry. But long after she's hung up, those words continue to circle her mind until she has worked herself up into a worry. But she can't just drop everything to go see if her mum's alright as there is no one to look after the children. So she will have to wait till morning. But as soon as she's dropped Sophia off, she'll be round at her mum's to check that she's ok...that all is well.

Only when she gets there five hours later, there is no sign of her mum. The house is in silence, the curtains still drawn, the bed has not been slept in. Her mother's handbag complete with her purse and her keys are still beside the lounge. Only her phone is missing. As is her mum. And as a cold dread fills her, Lorraine recalls those chilling words her mum uttered in the wee hours in a frightened whisper...

"Your dad was first. Now it's me. I'm so scared, but mostly for you and the children. Because once I'm gone, you'll be next."

After searching her mother's house, Lorraine goes to the police station to report her as missing. Only she's and adult and has only been gone for a few hours. She could be anywhere and be home at any moment. But Lorraine tries to impress on the man at the desk the importance of the situation. Her mother has no one. She wouldn't just disappear without telling her. Nor did she have anywhere to go. All Sandra had was Lorraine and the children. But there was nothing they could do unless her mother was deemed vulnerable. Was she vulnerable? She wasn't sure. The kindly man assured her that her mother will probably be back in no time and wonder what all the fuss was about, but if not, to return after seventy two hours...or was it forty eight hours? Lorraine can't remember. All she knows is that her mum is missing and some garbled message in the middle of the night that barely made any sense.

A return to her mum's house has her searching for answers and it comes in the form of her mum's kindly neighbour Mrs Tindall. Lorraine didn't really have time to stop and chat but Mrs Tindall was a lonely old woman and it wouldn't hurt. But little did she know that Mrs Tindall held the key to a Pandora's box and, while not a wealth of information, it was a start. She had in her possession letters written to her father over the years which he had hidden on their property, away from her mother who would go spare if got wind of it. The letters were from her father's son, Trevor. Which means he was Lorraine's half brother. A half brother she knew nothing about. Thanking Mrs Tindall, she took the letters home and poured over their contents, her eyes brimming with tears at the pleading tone. This poor boy. All he had been through. Why did her parents not give him a home?

It seems that's not all they didn't tell her as her quest for answers sends her on a three hour round trip to Liverpool and an aunt she barely remembers from her childhood, her dad's younger sister. Aunt Caroline fills in the blanks that have evaded Lorraine for thirty years...a whole life she knew nothing about.

But the question remains, where is her mother? And how much of the past has to do with her disappearance?

THE STEPSON is an entertaining, though at times heartbreaking, domestic suspense that had me turning the pages to find out what happened to Sandra. The story cleverly unfolds in the past and present narratives giving the reader a clear picture of events and how each of the threads entwined. There were so many secrets and plenty of deception which were slowly stripped away to reveal the truth. And what an ugly truth it was.

Quite honestly, I didn't like Sandra. Yes, she probably suffered from post natal psychosis as she was clearly delusional and irrational but that continued throughout the years and she was utterly horrible to poor old hen-pecked Henry. Whether she had good cause or not to make such demands, they were not her decisions to make and those she made were amidst the irrational fog of delusion. As for Trevor, I actually felt sorry for him. I wanted him to make it good, to turn his life around and never look back. No child should have had to endure what he had to. Nor should any child be used as a pawn in their parent's disputes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story far more than the author's previous one "My Little Brother" and so glad I requested it. It was addictive, compelling and thoroughly entertaining. A good solid read.

REVIEW: My Sister's Secret by Diane Saxon

My Sister's Secret by Diane Saxon
Genre: Domestic thriller, Domestic drama, Suspense
Read: 16th January 2023
Published: 19th January 2023

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

Four sisters, four secrets. Who has the deadliest of them all?

Something happened to me when I was nine.

My childhood memories before that fateful day are gone. Extinguished.

The aftermath has become a living nightmare with a guilt that runs so deep that I’m not sure I can ever tell anyone. I fear I've left it too late...

The burden of my secret and the hurt and pain that silence cost each and every member of my family is too overwhelming.

But you can't avoid fate and now I have the opportunity to right the wrongs inflicted on us.

There was no justice. Not then. Not now. But I can change that.

The big question is, how far am I willing to go?

MY THOUGHTS:

The bigger the secret...the deeper the lies...

Four sisters - Tess, Bobbi, Alexis and Sarah - were born years apart and, though very different personalities, remain close now that they are adults. Because something happened when they were children that drew them together and kept them bonded throughout their lives. Even a shadow of a memory can still be as vivid today as the day it happened, as it did for the sisters. One of them endured a twisted kind of depravity whilst another suffered her own trauma silently. And yet it affected all of them.

Over three decades later, Tess is married to a philandering sixty-two year old who she herself had stolen from his previous wife; Bobbi is happily married to Craig, a heavy vehicle driver and a life and sanity saver, who helps keep their family together while she works long hours as a social worker; Alexis, a paramedic, is a emotional anxious wreck with two husbands behind her and a train wreck of broken relationships; and then there is Sarah, the youngest of them all who probably suffered the least of them, is a gym instructor and personal trainer who has her own happy news to impart which she fears will once again be overshadowed by Alexis' drama...again.

A face from the past is splashed across the local newspapers with the news that after an emotional court case the judge had deemed the case against him to be weak and unable to convict him, freeing him to offend again. Gary Philpotts is a serial offender who began his deviant path in his teens and, although he has been jailed for drug possession and dealing, has never been found guilty or convicted or served time for the abhorrent atrocities he has committed over several decades.

When the sisters get wind of his all-but-acquittal, they are livid. How could he get away with such crimes for so long? Everyone knows what he was capable of, what he was guilty of, and yet the police failed to make any charges stick. And so the sisters call an emergency meeting for mutual support. But one of them secretly takes things further...

But he wasn't the only man guilty of abuse. How many others deserve punishment for their sins?

MY SISTER'S SECRET is very different from what I expected. It was a slow burn to begin with that I did wonder if it was every going to pick up. I think it took almost 30% before the sisters actually convened to discuss the shocking development they just discovered. After that, the pace did pick up a little more but it is not fast pace page turner. More like a casual stroll that allows you to uncover little tidbits along the way.

The story itself is quite character driven and for once we are spared the teenage angst from the moody 15 year old who turns out to be not so bad. The story unfolds through the eyes of each sister throughout, with an odd unnamed first person narrative who battles their own trauma and memories whilst trying to maintain their every day mask. You don't know which of the sisters this anonymous narrative is but I did narrow it down fairly early on. And yet their identity isn't revealed until the very end. There are several red herrings to throw you off track but don't be fooled by them...or the false sense of security you may feel. Because this is one heck of a family drama of massive proportions.

The subject matter is one that is incredibly emotive but Saxon handles it sensitively without any graphic description...more nuance and innuendo which more than give the reader the idea. Also a nod to the author for including herself a mention in the plot.

MY SISTER'S SECRET is filled with secrets throughout...but which one of the sisters has the biggest secret?

Overall, a good solid read that was entertaining despite the slow start which ends up being a highly charged and emotional read.

Can you guess the sister?

Trigger warning: rape, child abuse, molestation.

REVIEW: My Little Brother by Diane Saxon

My Little Brother by Diane Saxon
Genre: Domestic thriller, Psychological thriller, Suspense
Read: 12th July 2022
Published: 11th July 2022

★★★★ 3.5 stars (rounded up)

DESCRIPTION:

Two siblings, both missing for 20 years turn up within one day of each other. One dead. One alive.

It was an ordinary school day, the day I lost my little brother.
One moment he was on the roundabout and then was gone. Gone. Missing.
They all blamed me. I was in charge. Even though I was only ten years old.
They sent me away. The hurt, the shame, the questions. The not knowing.
I tried to move on.

It’s been nineteen years in exile and now somebody wants me back.
Someone with a dark secret. They hold the keys, they know the truth.
So, I need to return to the Welsh village of my childhood to find out who, because I have a secret, too…

I did something bad.

Diane Saxon’s standalone thriller is sure to plunge you into the dark world of secrets and lies.

MY THOUGHTS:

“Dewch adref. Mae’n amser i chi wybod y gwir. - Come home. It’s time you learned the truth.”

I read and loved Diane Saxon's "The Ex", despite it being part of a series it sufficed well as a standalone, so I was excited to delve into the mystery of MY LITTLE BROTHER. A missing child, a family torn apart, secrets and mysteries abound. Although I didn't find it quite as enthralling as "The Ex", it was still a decent enough read to keep me interested throughout though I did feel it dipped in the middle.

The story opens with a prologue taking place twenty years previously when ten year old Caryn was left to look after her six year old special needs brother Lloyd. It's a lot of responsibility to place on a ten year old but Caryn loves her little brother, even if he is a little demanding at times and throws the odd meltdown. She has learnt to read him well enough to gauge how to best avoid one and avert a crisis. But today Caryn just wanted to be herself and sit a while with her best friend Dylan. But it was her mam's 50th birthday today and she needed to keep Lloyd occupied until they could return home for the surprise cake her dad had ordered. Then when the time came for Dylan to head home, Caryn walked with him to bid him goodbye. Lloyd was still on the circling roundabout counting his fingers over and over. She wouldn't be a minute. But when she returned...the roundabout was empty...and Lloyd was gone.

Twenty years later, Caryn is a doctor in a busy London practice. Her life has moved on from that fateful day when her little brother disappeared and was never seen again. Her parents blamed her for "losing him" when she was supposed to be watching him and sent her away to live with the paternal grandmother she had never met. She never saw or spoke to her parents again. Years of therapy have helped her move on and box up the memories of her brother's disappearance and the events surrounding it. And she has not thought of it, or anyone else from the Welsh village that was once her home, again.

But in the last few weeks, Caryn has been receiving notes typed in Welsh, a language she has not read nor spoken for two decades. But with a little help from Google, she has translated them and their inference is clear. Someone knows what she did. Someone knows what happened the day Lloyd disappeared. Someone knows what happened to Lloyd. And now they are calling her back to where it began...and ended.

Unable to move on without knowing the truth, Caryn takes a sabbatical and makes the long and unfamiliar journey to the place where she grew up until the age of ten. If she thought people would welcome her with open arms, then she is sadly mistaken. It seems even twenty years is not long enough for this village in North Wales to forgive...or forget. Not even her parents.

But Caryn is home to finally learn the truth about what happened to her little brother, even if the village inhabitants don't want her there. And she will stop at nothing to uncover the truth.

What happened to Lloyd? Who sent Caryn the notes and why? And who wants to stop her from uncovering the truth?

MY LITTLE BROTHER was certainly not what I expected, especially after the frenetic pace "The Ex". It is a domestic thriller set in a small Welsh village with cold whipping winds and snow on the mountain tops...and that sing-sing lilt that only the Welsh have. I love the accent I could almost hear it in the dialogue.

The story unfolds through Caryn's third person narrative, with the odd narrative in the villain's voice. While it is set in the present day, there are flashbacks cleverly inserted and played out in italics (for easy identification) that come back in the form of memories as bit by bit the pieces of the puzzle fall gradually into place for Caryn. There is a real mystery as to the identity of the villain and their motive, but the pieces finally fell into place for me just moments before the reveal came.

I enjoyed MY LITTLE BROTHER, though not as much as I thought I would, but it is still a good solid read to keep you engaged enough to know the outcome. The story is well-plotted and cleverly told, particularly the anonymity around "the watcher" which added that sense of impending doom. And I especially love the cover. That roundabout/merry-go-round was my favourite ride as a child.

My favourite part of the whole tale was the ending. It finished with the same lines uttered twenty years ago and I thought it was very fitting end.

Overall, MY LITTLE BROTHER is a suspenseful read that has a steady pace, though it dips in the middle somewhat. The writing is good and the story isn't overly complex making it a relatively enjoyable mystery thriller.

I would like to thank #DianeSaxon, #Netgalley, #BoldwoodBooks and #RachelsRandomResources for an ARC of #MyLittleBrother in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Ex by Diane Saxon

The Ex (DS Jenna Morgan #4) by Diane Saxon
Genre: Crime fiction, Psychological thriller
Read: 24th February 2021
Published: 2nd March 2021

★★★★★ 5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

Sometimes your past just won't let go...

As a heat wave grips the country, DS Jenna Morgan is called to a domestic incident at the home of a young family in Ironbridge.

Pregnant Imelda Cheetham-Epstein has been found unconscious by her husband, Zak with serious head injuries.

When Jenna arrives on the scene, she discovers something even more disturbing – the couple's eleven-month-old son, Joshua, is missing and the race against time begins to find him.

Is this an accident or something more sinister?

Are the two incidents linked?

Or has something in the Cheetham-Epstein's past caught up with them?

Diane Saxon is back with a gripping new psychological crime novel, perfect for fans of Cara Hunter and Carol Wyer.

MY REVIEW:

I didn't know this book was part of a series when I signed up for it but, admittedly, it doesn't matter because it works well as a standalone with just enough backstory from previous books to suffice. But what I really like about this book is that the procedural part is not the forefront of the story but rather is secondary to the main focus, which is the disappearance of a child and the woman who took her. THAT is what makes THE EX addictive reading.

The story begins with Emily at a work function when she overhears a conversation regarding her ex, the love of her life, Zak had remarried. She then locks herself in a toilet cubicle with a bottle of rose wine ruminating over where it all went wrong. Zak. She hadn't seen him in so long. She used to sit outside his house for hours at a time, watching, waiting to catch a glimpse of him. But she hadn't done that in so long now. But now...in a moment of clarity, Emily knows what she will do. She will go and see Zak. As soon as he sees her he'll realise his terrible mistake and they can be together again.

Zak Cheetham-Epstein (a bit of a mouthful) used to work at the accountants where Emily is still employed. The two had hooked up and had some fun together but then Emily started to get a little clingy. She moved into his flat and started questioning where he had been and who with. She accused him of seeing other women and became volatile. Zak was only having some fun but for Emily, he was her true love, her soulmate. So when he ended things with her and left the company, Emily is devastated. But Zak never saw her again and in the two years since has met and married Imelda who has given him a son, Joshua, and is pregnant with her their second child. They live in a beautiful Victorian house overlooking the gorge in Ironbridge that has been in his family for three generations and were in the process of renovating it.

When there is a knock at the door one Sunday morning, Zak is upstairs sanding a door ready to repaint while Imelda answers it with a smile in place. No one expects things to go so horribly wrong...not Zak, not Imelda and not Emily.

Despite being on her day off, DS Jenna Morgan is called to the home of a reported domestic incident. When she arrives, she finds pregnant Imelda Cheetham-Epstein unconscious with serious head injuries. Her husband Zak stands nearby in shock, an obvious suspect despite reporting that his wife had fallen. The gash on her cheek and bruising to her face suggested something far more sinister as the team attempted to preserve what they could of the scene after the paramedics left with Imelda. It's not until she questions Zak further that Jenna discovers the couple have an 11 month old child that was apparently sleeping. Jenna and her team find it unlikely a child could have slept through the noise created by police and paramedics treating Imelda, but checks the rest of the house anyway. No child. So where was baby Joshua? Had Zak done something to the child and he and Imelda were arguing about it when he struck her and she fell?

Jenna and her team, DCs Morris King and Ryan Downey, search the bushland surrounding the house and into the gorge to no avail. They are about to call it a day when a woman approaches Jenna, a frantic expression on her face. She has been out all day and has only just returned to hear the news but feels she may have some information that will help. It seems her son insisted she have CCTV installed and on her camera was a figure carrying what appeared to be a child. The image was so blurry they weren't able to tell if it was male or female...but they very definitely were carrying a child. So who was this person? Did they attack Imelda? And why did they take baby Joshua?

Fern awakes to the sound of a baby crying believing it to be another dream, her subconscious torturing her with her desire for a child. But as she wakes properly she realises the cries are real. Tentatively, she pushes open the nursery door...the nursery her sister Emily decorated and that she has never entered. In the cot was a toddler screaming their little heart out. Fern rushes forward and picks up the screaming child and attempts to soothe it with a lullaby she makes up as she croons. Slowly, the child quietens and Fern wonders what on earth has Emily done? Then when Emily appears in the doorway she informs her that she wanted a child and now she has one. This child is her gift to Fern. There is only one problem...this child is a boy but Emily insists she is a girl and she is called Angel. To ensure the child's safety, Fern must think and treat the child as a girl.

While investigating Joshua's disappearance, Jenna is reminded of the time when her sister Fliss was kidnapped previously and their beloved dog Domino injured. It also brings back memories of when her partner was killed right in front of her eyes, the trauma of it haunting her for a long time after. Although these incidents took place in previous books, we are not left in the dark as the author gives us enough information to keep us informed without us being confused, making this one easily read as a standalone.

THE EX is a compelling mix of crime and psychological thriller that keeps us engaged from start to finish. And what better way than to give readers a psycho ex? And there is also something not quite right about sisters Emily and Fern...

I love all the characters in this book, even the ones you love to hate! Jenna and her team are not weighed down by rank and hierarchy pissing contests, but rather have a camaraderie that reflects on their ability to get the job done and to do it well. The support of her family and loved ones are also a refreshing touch, without the bid for attention between partner and job. It certainly makes a refreshing change.

And then there is Emily. How well she was portrayed. As much as as love to hate her, her depiction was memorable to say the least. I also felt a little sorry for her although I was also a tad scared of her and what she might do. It is clear she was unstable but what exactly the problem was is not made clear until the end. And the final twist was a spectacular turn of events I began to put together myself. But wow!

An addictive read from the beginning, THE EX was so much better than I anticipated it to be and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved meeting Jenna, Fliss, Morris, Ryan, Adrian and even the DI who was surprisingly personable, as is so usually not the case in crime fiction. A refreshing change which made the procedural aspects a pleasure to read. Although I really loved that that was only a part of the story with readers being privy to Emily and her twisted mind. Although we know what happens from the start, we still don't really know what is happening. It is a very clever ploy to lull readers into a false sense of security thinking we know what's going to happen...when we do and we don't.

Cleverly written with plenty of twists throughout, THE EX is ramps up the thriller aspect a notch with a real sense of fear and helplessness in the midst of a wild and emotional thrill-ride. The issues surrounding mental illness were sensitively navigated and in a way that the reader feels empathy for the guilty party. Diane Saxon is a new author for me but I will be hunting out her previous books in this series and add them to my never-ending TBR pile.

Absolutely addictive read that I could not devour quick enough, I have no hesitation recommending THE EX to fans of police procedurals with a difference as well domestic and psychological thriller fans. A solid 5 star read.

I would like to thank #DianeSaxon, #RachelsRandomResources, #Netgalley and #BoldwoodBooks for an ARC of #TheEx in exchange for an honest review.
