REVIEW: The Missing Mother by Casey Kelleher

The Missing Mother by Casey Kelleher
Genre: Psychological thriller, Suspense
Read: 30th January 2024
Published: 5th February 2024

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

I place my tiny, newborn baby in the box. A ‘safe haven’, they call it, for unwanted babies. She’ll be warm, someone will find her soon. She’ll be cared for. But not by me. I will always want her, but I can never be her mother. And she can never know why.

Jenna has never truly known who she is or where she came from. Abandoned as a baby, she grew up with a caring adopted family, and never felt the need to know more about her birth parents. Until one night, nearly thirty years later, when she sees a desperate young woman tearfully kiss her little baby, put it gently down in a safe haven box, and walk away.

In that moment, Jenna’s mind starts to race. Who could abandon their child like that, and why? She may never find her own parents, but Jenna is determined to uncover the truth behind this baby’s missing mother. Because Jenna has a terrible feeling that she knows who the mother is, and what happened…

As Jenna digs deeper she uncovers something – someone – far more dangerous than she ever feared. And the secrets they’re hiding are much bigger than just one night, just one woman, just one baby. But what Jenna hasn’t realised is that they know what she’s doing and they are watching her. Whatever the cost, they’ll do anything to keep Jenna from revealing the truth…

This utterly addictive psychological thriller will have you reading late into the night. Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Lisa Jewell and Claire McGowan.

MY THOUGHTS:

The only way to stay safe...is to stay hidden...

Well that wasn't what I expected. I mean that in a good way. I thought this would be another missing baby/mother thriller but oh no, this was so much more. The only let down was the main character and the fact she was a journalist. I find them parasitic scourges of society feeding off the misfortune of others and had it not been for that aspect I may have enjoyed it more. BUT...it is a key element of the story, so all is forgiven.

They call is "safely surrendered". A safe box provided by a charity which women who find themselves in impossible situations where they find themselves unable to care for their babies, can safely surrender them in these boxes where they are quickly collected and in the care of social services. The mother has a right to anonymity and will not be sought or vilified for her decision.

Journalist Jenna receives a tip off that a baby has been left at the local fire station, the first locality in the UK to trial the safe box. Eager for a scoop, Jenna is quick to gather as much information and a photograph of the hours old baby before social services swoop in. She calls her boss with the news and he is eager to publish the story highlighting the trial without treading on the charity's toes by going public with it. After all, it's a human interest story...isn't it?

But deep down, Jenna fears for the mother. That she may need help and feel she cannot reach out. She's hoping her story will encourage the woman to come forward. But she has no idea of the rabbit warren she is going down...or what she will uncover.

Scared and alone, Evie can't believe it when she sees her baby girl's photo in the paper the following morning. After everything she went through, the hiding, the secrecy, the torment...all to keep her little girl safe and this journalist bandies her photo around in the local paper which is soon picked up by the nationals. Fearing for her safety, she is terrified what this means for her now that this has become public knowledge. Despite the assurances that her anonymity is guaranteed, the nation is soon searching for "the missing mother". What will happen to her and her baby girl when they catch up with her? Or worst still...if "he" does?

This was an intriguing read from start to finish despite the irritating journalist aspect. I kept turning the pages wanting to know if I was right in my assumptions. My first guess was too obvious but my second was spot on!

The story unfolds through both Jenna and Evie's eyes and the two threads are carefully interwoven leading to a thrilling nail-biting finish.

DESCRIPTION:

Everything I thought I knew about my life is a lie. My mother revealed a terrible, dangerous secret in her last letter to me. But, with her death, any chance of knowing the truth has disappeared. I’ll have to do whatever it takes to find out for myself.

Going back to the house where I was born, I find a family living the life I’d always dreamed of. And when Cecelia, the mother, mistakes me for the new nanny, I seize the chance to move in. Maybe, being in the house every day and night, I will remember more, uncover more, about the secret that haunts me…

But this family is not the happy one it appears from the outside. Cecelia is angry, unpredictable, unstable. She is not the mother these children deserve. They are scared of her, and rightly so.

As my memories start to crystalize, I am ever more determined to shelter them from harm. Because history has a horrible way of repeating itself, and I’ll do everything I can to protect these children. But how long can I stay here, undetected, pretending to be someone I’m not? And if the children end up in danger, what will I have to do to save them…?

With twists no reader will EVER see coming, this incredibly gripping psychological thriller is perfect for fans of The Housemaid, The Widow and The Housewarming.

MY THOUGHTS:

This family is hiding much more than the truth...

This is the second Casey Kelleher thriller I've read and I have to say I am impressed. THE BABYSITTER'S SECRET was as thrilling and as addictive as "Only Child" was and I devoured it in one sitting! A dark and twisted tale, it is a chilling one that will have you questioning who and what to believe as both narrators are unreliable and incredibly complex.

The story starts out with a chilling prologue before moving on to a seemingly random scene and narrative by one of our main characters - Emily. She is unquestionably unreliable from the start with her demeanour, her flashbacks and auditory hallucinations of a crying girl that just only seems to get louder and louder. At first, it appears the girl is left to cry unattended in the flat next door but as the story unfolds it becomes clear the girl is just a delusion that Emily torments herself with. Why? And why is her support worker trying to trick her? Stealing her journal and make her seem crazy? Emily knows she just wants to see her back in the secure unit again.

The next chapter we are introduced to Sasha who turns up to a house she has been given the address to and rings the bell hoping for a glimpse inside the property. The woman who opens the door does so in the midst of a mid-morning panicked rush and assumes that she is the replacement nanny, ushering her in without a second thought or checking her references. Sasha tries to correct her but Cecilia doesn't give her the opportunity and is out the door before the record is set straight. It's OK...she can do this. She can be a nanny. How hard can it be? She wanted the opportunity to glimpse inside this house which holds great significance to her and now she has the perfect opportunity.

Sasha has had a difficult past. Her mother has recently passed away and only then did she discover, via letter her mother left with her solicitor, that she was adopted. Meaning her whole life as she knew it was a lie. But it's hardly surprising as she never really fit in anyway. So now she has in her hand the address for the house in which she had spent her early years...before she was adopted...and she is granted to perfect opportunity to find some connection with the now renovated house. At first, she sees nothing but clean lines and new furnishings. But little by little, memories begin to resurface...and Sasha starts to wonder if these are just dreams or memories?

This is indeed a dark and even disturbing tale. Chilling even. But it is also tinged with sadness. It can also be said that there is a child abuse trigger as well as mental illness. Both narrators are unreliable and complex and the reader can be excused for thinking how the two storylines intersect. But be patient...all will be revealed in due course.

THE BABYSITTER'S SECRET is a twisted tale of secrets and revenge. I was hooked from the very first page and didn't stop until I flipped the very last at the end, devouring the book in just five hours. I was invested from the beginning wanting to know who was gaslighting who and why and how the stories were connected. And my little grey cells were firing all their synapses as I slowly pieced the puzzle together. I saw the twists coming before they were revealed but I didn't care...I'm here for the ride and the entertainment value! The final twist was a surprise but I thought it kind of spoilt it in the end and should have been left as it was. But it was still a thrilling read and that I enjoyed every minute of!

DESCRIPTION:

The police are here. The feeling of pure dread swirls in my stomach as a million scenarios start playing out in my head. My whole life I’ve expected something bad to happen to my daughter. It is as if part of me has been expecting it. As if I deserve it.

Fifteen-year-old Kayla is the apple of her parents’ eyes, their beautiful only daughter. They tried for so long to have her that she was even more precious when she arrived. But deep down, her mother Sherrie has always been terrified that their worst fear would come true: that Kayla would be taken from them.

Then one day – just as Sherrie had dreaded – Kayla fails to return home after a sleepover. In desperation, Sherrie and her husband Richard call Kayla’s friends. They scour the streets, their search becoming more and more frantic. Until the police arrive and deliver the shocking news, when their worst nightmare comes true: someone has their daughter.

As Sherrie and Richard grill friends, family, and even each other, Sherrie starts to wonder, has the secret they’ve been hiding all these years finally caught up with them?

Because Sherrie and Richard are living a lie. A lie so huge, so shocking, that it could destroy the one thing they hold most dear – their daughter.

And if the truth comes out, their family will never be the same. But if it doesn’t, they will never see their precious girl again…

A totally unputdownable psychological thriller that will have you gasping out loud until the very last page. If you love Lisa Jewell, K.L. Slater and T.M. Logan, you’ll be obsessed with Only Child.

MY THOUGHTS:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Casey Kelleher's tense domestic thriller ONLY CHILD.

This is my first foray into new-to-me author Casey Kelleher and wow! What an introduction! The plot had all the hallmarks I love in a good domestic suspense tale - intrigue, mystery, tension, gaslighting, mental illness, unreliable narratives and teenage angst thrown into the mix - what more could you want?

The story opens with a few short lines before jumping into the prologue which leaves us wondering where this tale is really going to end up. We are then thrown into the lives of two couples - Sherrie and Richard Goldman along with Tessa and Amelia. But who are these people to each other and just how are they connected?

In the London suburb of Hackney, Tessa lives happily with her partner Amelia...but her past continues to haunt her. Although what happened to her was many years ago, she still can't escape the terror she felt then that feels all to real now. While it is not clear at first what happened to Tessa, it is blindly obvious she suffers PTSD as a result. Her past experience left her understandably traumatised which now leads her to paranoid idealisations.

So when she's at the supermarket buying ingredients to bake Amelia a birthday cake (or at least attempt to), Tessa sees a face from her past. It's him. The man who destroyed her life and got away with it. Though he is so much older now she is sure it's him...and she follows him home at a safe distance. And then comes her second shock. He's only streets away from where she lives. And the third? He has a family - a wife and a daughter. How could he escape justice and go on to lead such a normal life? With a wife and family? How could he do what he did to her and get to have all this?

And so Tessa sits outside their house and watches...and waits...until she can get her revenge.

Sherrie and Richard and their 15 year old daughter Kayla have a somewhat normal life. They have a beautiful house in a wonderful area...but they have fallen out of love and only stay together for their daughter. Sherrie is a stay at home mother while Kayla does her best to push against the boundaries keeping her tied down, which is what any normal teenager does. But unlike other mothers, Sherrie is overprotective of her daughter, going as far as to hide her passport to prevent her from going to France with her classmates. This is not the first time Sherrie has prevented Kayla from other similar excursions but she has always come up with a ready excuse which Kayla never questioned. But as her mother, she is dutybound to protect Kayla...if only her daughter could see that.

And then Kayla goes missing after a night out with friends. And all of Sherrie's fears come bursting to the surface. This is exactly what she was afraid of; why she was so protective of Kayla; why she encased her in a maternal bubble...to keep her safe. You never knew who was out there. But now all of Richard's secrets are coming back to bite them. The time she learnt who he truly was. It was people like him she was protecting Kayla from...and now one of them has taken her!

Where is Kayla? Who has taken her? And why? Or did the girl simply run away from her overprotective mother? And why is Tessa so focused on a seemingly complete stranger?

The story unfolds through the alternating narratives of Tessa, Sherrie and Kayla - none of whom are entirely reliable. All of them have something to hide. But what exactly are they hiding? The race to uncover the truth is an addictive thrill ride one that will have you turning the pages at the speed of light.

There are twists at every turn that make this an unputdownable "one sitting" read that is both intriguing and entertaining. You think you know what's going on, you but you don't. I had a few suspects lined up and was surprised when one of them was the villain! Even a major plot twist I had suspected very early on I never thought would come to fruition but did! I was just taking stabs in the dark because I had no idea where this train wreck was heading at the time.

There are so many different tangents this tale could take but it held my interest throughout. So many juicy secrets and layers to peel back make this an intriguing mystery to unpick.

ONLY CHILD is a fast paced intriguing thrill ride from start to finish...and I enjoyed every minute of it!

I would like to thank #CaseyKelleher, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #OnlyChild in exchange for an honest review.
