REVIEW: Save Her Twice by Helen Phifer

Save Her Twice (Detective Morgan Brookes #11) by Helen Phifer
Genre: Crime fiction, Crime thriller, Mystery, Police procedural
Read: 11th February 2024
Published: 7th February 2024

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

Morgan shivers in the darkness as she walks through the park towards the abandoned building. She sees the body and the blood dripping onto the cold, frosty grass. A beautiful teenage girl is dead. Morgan feels rage build inside of her as she realises who it is…

Arriving at a quiet family home on the outskirts of the Lake District, Detective Morgan Brookes must deliver devastating news to a heartbroken mother. Seeing Lexie’s pink boots against the side of the house, she remembers the girl’s happy face and can’t help but think of her carefree childhood. Three years ago, Morgan saved Lexie from a serial killer, who is now behind bars. But this time, she’s failed to protect her.

Certain a new and more terrifying killer is at large, Morgan finds a neighbour who claims a man in a silver car was watching Lexie’s house. Then she discovers that Lexie was meeting other survivors of serial killers at a local victim support group. Another girl, Milly, thinks she has been followed by the same silver car.

But just as Morgan rushes to warn the other women, the case takes an even more sinister turn. One of them is found dead, posed in a chair with her hands tied in prayer. Flames engulf the church where the victims usually meet, with several of the others trapped inside.

Morgan manages to save the women just in time, but she knows this killer will never give up. To find him, she must relive every terrifying case she’s ever worked on. Somewhere in her history lies the key to saving more lives, but Morgan has no idea that this dangerous individual wants her as his final victim…

A dark, gripping and twisty new thriller in the Morgan Brookes series that will have you racing until the final page. For fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Rachel McLean.

MY THOUGHTS:

Sometimes I think Morgan thinks she's a one-woman band. Although in this book she does tame it down a little, she still faces off with the killer at the end. At least this time she didn't go out looking for him...yet.

This is the eleventh book in the Detective Morgan Brooks series complete with her entourage of colourful characters from Susie to Declan to Theo to Cain. Not to forget Ben either who I'm sure is on his way to a heart attack with constantly looking out for Morgan.

This time round Morgan is called out to the discovery of blood at one woman's front door, frantic that she's unable to raise her daughter Lexie. Some years previously, Morgan saved Lexie and her mother from near death, both of them barely escaping with their lives. As it turns out, Lexie is one many young women in a survivors support group who call themselves "the final girls", having all survived the grip of a killer.

When Lexie's body is discovered soon after, another young woman from the group Milly confides that she believes she is being followed and describes the car she has seen on a number of occasions. Is the killer stalking these survivors to finish what their would-be killers never could?

But as Morgan delves deeper, she begins to realise that she too is in the killer's crosshairs.

As with the rest of this series, I enjoyed this mystery despite how predictable Morgan is becoming. The chapters are short and snappy keeping the pace moving along steadily. Actually this one was a quick read I managed to finish in just a few hours.

Overall, another exciting installment for Morgan and her team.

I would like to thank #HelenPhifer, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #SaveHerTwice in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: Stolen Darlings by Helen Phifer

Stolen Darlings (Detective Morgan Brookes #10) by Helen Phifer
Genre: Crime fiction, Crime thriller, Police procedurals
Read: 29th September 2023
Published: 29th September 2023

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

The girl’s body is lying still and the crown of rare darling roses is perfectly positioned in her beautiful auburn hair. Morgan thinks she looks picture-perfect. Until she notices the blood dripping down one side of the boulder beneath her…

Following her colleague Ben up to Castlerigg Stone Circle, Detective Morgan Brookes is shocked at what she finds. A young woman has been killed, left on display at the top of the hill with a crown of roses on her head. As the team race to get the popular tourist spot cordoned off, Morgan hears the heartbroken sobs of the woman who found the body, as she identifies the victim as her best friend Cora Dalton.

Morgan can already see that Cora didn’t struggle when her throat was cut. There’s no blood on the beautiful white gown she was wearing, which means that Cora knew her killer. But everyone, including her boyfriend Jay, has an alibi. As a local shopkeeper, Cora was a huge part of the community, and her neighbours are devastated to lose such a sweet soul.

Then Morgan’s team discover that a local photographer had arranged to meet Cora, and it’s clear from his messages that he chose her elegant white dress. Could their photoshoot have taken a sinister turn?

But when another body is found at another stone circle, wearing an identical flower crown, while the photographer is in custody, Morgan loses the only lead she has. Tracking down the florist who made the crown, Morgan pores over their records and realises the killer purchased three circles of roses…

Certain another innocent life is at risk and with the killer already steps ahead, can Morgan find the connection between these girls before another life is stolen?

An unbelievably gripping new crime thriller in the Detective Morgan Brookes series. Readers of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and Lisa Regan will be holding their breath as they race through the pages to the final, epic conclusion.

MY THOUGHTS:

Can you believe we're up to book 10 of this exciting series already? I have followed the exploits of Morgan, Ben and their team since the second book "The Killer's Girl" and it has been tension-filled and not-so-smooth-sailing from the start. Since the brutal murder of one of their own, they have recruited one of their favourite uniforms into CID and he has made himself right at home and has quickly made his mark with them.

In this installment, we see Morgan and Ben called out to Castlerigg Stone Circle with the murder of twenty eight year old Cora Dalton, a young woman who owned a witchcraft shop Black Moon in Kewsick High Street. Cora was found by her friends on the morning of what was to be a yoga outing to mark the Ostara (something I'm not at all familiar with but something to do with stars and spring or something). What they find on the flat stone is Cora's body with her neck slashed and dressed in a sheer white gown wearing a floral crown of roses and a garland of oak leaves.

The area is cordoned off and the team get to investigating the murder. They are quick to suspect the boyfriend who is a history teacher at a nearby school, particularly when it comes to light that he has something of a temper on him. Had he been violent towards Cora? Did she fear for her life?

While the team are busying questioning him and a local photographer, Morgan received a call from a neighbouring unit about a similar attack on another young woman. This time she survived thanks to an off-duty paramedic walking her dog who was quick to administer first aid and call for help. Tabitha King is rushed to surgery but is not out of the woods yet. Will she live long enough to give Morgan the breakthrough that they need?

Then they receive the disturbing news that the young man who works in the bookshop next to Cora's nan has gone missing. Morgan isn't worried as the woman is 68 and the killer's MO is that of young women. But then Lewis reveals that she runs a witchcraft shop nearby. Could this just be a coincidence? Both Cora and Tabitha ran similar types of shops. Should they be worried? Has the killer gone after the young man's nan this time?

With no shortage of suspects, the team are left racing for time to uncover the killer before he kills again. He'd purchased three rose crowns, two of which have been used. So he has one more left. Will Morgan and her team find him in time?

Another super read by Helen Phifer though once again Morgan continues to go in gung-ho to apprehend any suspect single-handedly that it is becoming a bit predictable. I enjoy this series but would prefer a little less predictability when it comes to Morgan as we all know what she's going to do and that it will always be her left chasing down the villain at the end of the day, sometimes to her own detriment. But what makes this series so enjoyable is the camaraderie within the team. I love reading their banter which I often enjoy more than than the investigation. It makes the series a pleasure to read. But please, make Morgan a little less predictable.

Overall, another cracker read and addition to the series. I love the Lake District setting. A normally tranquil setting rocked by the deluge of murders penned by Phifer.

REVIEW: Hold Your Breath by Helen Phifer

Hold Your Breath (Detective Morgan Brookes #9) by Helen Phifer
Genre: Crime fiction, Crime thriller
Read: 30th May 2023
Published: 2nd June 2023

★★★★★ 4.5 stars (rounded up)

DESCRIPTION:

The biting wind whips around the crystal-clear waters of the lake. The girl sits with her eyes open, as if transfixed by the waves on the shoreline, but she has taken her last breath…

When Detective Morgan Brookes is called to Lake Thirlmere one frosty night, she’s devastated to find the body of a young woman positioned in front of the glistening reservoir. She has ligature marks on her limbs, glue residue on her eyes, and her beautiful face is as cold as ice. Knowing only a dangerous serial killer would arrange a scene so carefully, Morgan is in a race against time to stop them before more innocent lives are lost.

The victim is twenty-year-old Jasmine Armer and her mother is distraught to hear that her beautiful daughter is gone. And Morgan is shocked when she learns that Jasmine’s father recently died by suicide at the same picturesque spot. The killer must have known the family. Then Morgan receives a terrifying package at the station of an intricate death mask. She immediately recognises Jasmine’s long lashes and perfectly-plump lips.

With the killer taunting her, Morgan knows time is running out. And then Morgan gets the heart-shattering call that her friend, Emily, has been killed. Ligature marks on Emily’s arms are identical to Jasmine’s. Heartbroken Morgan knows this isn’t the end of the killer’s twisted game, but can she track them down before they take another life?

A non-stop thrill ride from the very first chapter to the final, epic conclusion. Fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and Lisa Regan will be glued to the pages of this addictive rollercoaster of a read.

MY THOUGHTS:

This review, like the series, really needs no introduction. It's a thrilling fast paced and addictive series with each book better than the previous, if that's at all possible. And yet this book, as with all the previous ones, trouble has a way of finding Morgan once again. The woman is a walking magnet for trouble that it's no wonder their former colleague Des (who met a grisly end last installment) referred to her as their resident grim reaper. She practically is. And to be honest, as much as I love this series, the amount of scrapes Morgan gets herself into with every book I'm surprised she is still standing and it's getting a little wearing. But more on that further on...

Set in the picturesque Lake District on the banks of Lake Thirlmere (which is actually a resevoir but lake sounds so much more inviting), local response officer patroling the area comes across the body of a young woman in her car. It's not clear at first whether the death is suspicious but...it seems somewhat likely under the circumstances.

Enter DC Morgan Brookes and her boyfriend/partner/boss DS Ben Matthews. They get the call as they are about to go home for the night and from that moment on, the pair and their team get little sleep until their killer is caught. They soon identify the young woman and learn that she was a dental assistant at a local practice in Windemere and so Morgan swoops in to question the staff. She gets a creepy vibe off handsome hunky dentist Neil Barnard, who seems just a little too full of himself, and makes a note to follow up on his alibi and run some background checks on him. It's not surprising that he comes back squeaky clean...and yet still her antennae twitches whenever she's around him.

Meanwhile, someone has sent Morgan a creepy mask that she thinks is one of her colleagues having a laugh. Cain finds the mask hilarious even if it does resemble a dead face with no eyes. Morgan can't bear to look at it a moment longer and tosses it. But has she been a little too hasty?

And then the case gets a little more personal for her when someone she knows turns up dead in much the same way as the first victim, also in her car. She knows now that she must find this killer before he takes another woman...but is she too late?

Oh, it has to be said, as much as I love Morgan the woman infuriates me! She's told to do something and she does the exact opposite. She's told NOT to do something and she goes ahead and does it anyway, justifying her actions as being for the greater good and catching the killer. Anyone else who disregards her boss' orders would be done for insubordination and on a disciplinary charge. I know this is fiction but really? Morgan is not teflon. She can't stomp her Doc Martens and give a death stare to get her own way. Nor can she disregard orders which are given for her own good and safety just because she wants to go all gung-ho and single-handedly catch the killer...all while nursing a concussion, a haematoma and the mother of all headaches...just because she doesn't like to be told what to do! The amount of times she gets herself into trouble, abducted by killers, smacked in the head, shot at, wrestled or collided with...in every book and yet still she comes out smelling roses while poor Des asked the wrong person one wrong question and he meets a grisly end. It's annoying and infuriating and not at all realistic. She is, after all, just a DC...practically the bottom of the CID chain.

Don't get me wrong, I do love this series. It is one of my favourites and I look forward to every new book. It's just for once, I would like her to do as she's told and stay in the station or at home and not go off without a word to save the day. She is one person and they are supposed to be a team. And what a great team they are. Cain makes a wonderful addition to their team and he will find his feet soon enough. Amy has grown on me as I did find her a little abrasive at first. I still don't know what to make of Marc...but I guess time will tell. But I do really enjoy Ben and Morgan's relationship and look forward to seeing where the next book will take them.

HOLD YOUR BREATH is a solid addition to this compelling and addictive series. Even I had no clue who the killer was until nearer the end. The plot is tight and the suspense gripping, keeping you guessing with a few surprises along the way. If you've not read this series, I do highly recommend it.

Bring on book 10!

REVIEW: Their Burning Graves by Helen Phifer

Their Burning Graves (Morgan Brookes #8) by Helen Phifer
Genre: Crime fiction, Crime thriller, Police procedural
Read: 22nd December 2022
Published: 19th December 2022

★★★★★ 4.5 stars (rounded up)

DESCRIPTION:

They are picture perfect. A young, happy family sat around the kitchen table. But no one moves as wisps of smoke filter into the room and the house becomes a burning grave around them…

When reports come in of a family trapped in a burning house, Detective Morgan Brookes rushes to the scene. But as soon as she enters the ruined home, she is devastated by what she finds. Tied to the kitchen table, Sally and David Lawson, and their young son, had no chance of escaping the flames and the smoke…

Neighbours all agree the Lawsons were the perfect family, and CCTV shows nothing suspicious. Morgan’s only clue is the silver crucifix necklace around Sally’s neck. Because according to friends, she wasn’t religious. Was someone passing divine judgement on this mother and her family?

Focusing on Sally’s last steps, Morgan gets the breakthrough she needs – just days ago Sally had confided in a friend that she felt someone was watching her. And when Morgan finds photos of Sally on her neighbour Luke’s phone, all the pieces slot together.

Only then another local woman reports feeling watched. Nothing seems to link her to Luke, but Morgan can’t ignore it. Could the killer still be out there? Going deeper into Sally’s past and uncovering the killer’s motivations is her only chance to save more innocent lives, but can she solve the twisted puzzle in time?

MY THOUGHTS:

I just adore Helen Phifer's books and this series is one of my favourites, despite Morgan's ability to get into sticky situations all on her own with no back-up and I have to wonder...does she never learn? LOL Nevertheless, I am always eager to dive into whatever latest installment that awaits whilst piecing together all the clues Phifer drip-feeds her readers throughout. And of course I was not disappointed.

THEIR BURNING GRAVES is the eighth book in this exciting series and as with each other the characters simply grow beneath the tip of Phifer's pen. I love their camaraderie and banter and seeing how far loner Morgan has come since the first book that I read, which was in fact the second book in the series "The Killer's Girl". I still have the very first one sitting on my shelf to get to one of these days so that I can go back and see how and where it all began.

THEIR BURNING GRAVES opens with a shocking prologue and scenes of carnage that the reader just knows will come back to bite someone in the butt when they least expect it. I mean, that's how crime thrillers like this go, right? But in the final paragraphs of this opening, there is enough there to send chills down your spine as you can picture the scene as if you had witnessed it in reality.

Morgan Brookes is recovering from a sprained ankle she gained at the close of their last case in which they lost a fellow colleague and friend, Des Black. The team are still reeling from his loss, even blaming themselves, leaving them a team member down with just the three of them.

And then are called to a scene in which three family members are found dead around the kitchen table. Their neighbour called in to report their house on fire but that isn't what killed them. And that isn't the worst of it by any means. But who wanted Sally and David Lawson, and their their 14 year old son Tim, dead?

The Lawsons appear, on the surface, to the perfect family. They lived in a beautiful house in an affluent part of Rydal Falls so why were they targeted? No matter how deep they dig or what they uncover, Morgan feels sure that this crime was personal. But why? And who was the real target of these murders? Was it David, the English lecturer? Or Sally, the beauty salon owner? Or maybe it was Tim, the student who had suddenly fallen behind in his grades and had been lured to the dark web? But then what of the scene? Why was Sally wearing a crucifix if she wasn't religious? Why was the entire family murdered if only one of them was the target?

A chance encounter leads Morgan to a cafe-come-store called Practical Magic, after one of Morgan's favourite movies, where she meets the owner Annie. When Annie alerts her to concerns for one of her regular customers, Morgan is quick to lend a hand but is soon left thinking - what does it all mean? And how is it linked to the Lawson murder?

Can Morgan piece it all together and save another woman and her family from an obsessed and vengeful killer before it's too late?

Helen Phifer truly does it again with this heart-pounding addition to an already exciting series that was a quick read I read in a day. But I do find myself shaking my head at Morgan and wondering when will she ever learn? Time and time again, she puts herself in harm's way without back-up as if she is a a one woman crusader of the bionic kind that no killer can touch. Yes, it is exciting and makes for thrilling reading, but seriously, after eight books Morgan, you should know better by now. As much as I love this series and it does get better and better, I do tire sometimes of Morgan's relentless going in single-handedly to save the day. Can she not at least have a partner on hand to aid her should it all go pear-shaped? Does she always have to go it alone? I'm sorry, but for me common sense prevails. And in reality, Morgan would have been hauled over the coals for continually putting herself in danger. But I know I know...it's just a book. And of course, it makes for exciting reading. Her behaviour just frustrates me sometimes when she really should know better.

That aside, THEIR BURNING GRAVES is a brilliant read I devoured in a day. Although I found the mystery an easier puzzle this time round and easily pieced most of it together before the final showdown, it didn't ruin my enjoyment of it by any means. What I did find a little puzzling was a possible red herring that kind of backfired when Morgan was questioning a person of interest and was left feeling spooked by their summation of events and thinking to herself that she hadn't disclosed that information to them. But if you go back a few pages in that conversation, she did indeed reveal the very information she said she hadn't. So I feel that this was meant to be a red herring to put readers off the track but in the end it was kind of redundant.

Another point was the non-existent mobile phone signal at one of the scenes where Morgan couldn't call in to the station until she had left and signal had returned, but at the end she was at that very same place when she received a call on her phone...and yet throughout the entire book there had been no signal??

I did feel some of the stories of those involved weren't wrapped up as neatly this time round and I would have liked to see Maggie one last time as she was such an endearing character. I wouldn't mind sitting at her table and sampling her goodies.

Nevertheless, THEIR BURNING GRAVES is a fantastic addition to the series and an exciting story that unfolded superbly. I still enjoy the team's camaraderie and even miss Des, as irritating as he could be at times, but I welcome to addition of their newest member to the team as I feel he will be an incredible asset to them, as he was already an endearing character.

I did miss one character, though she did get a mention. Ettie. She is delightful and I would love to see more of her. I hope we do.

The ending was a little unexpected, as it usually ended with Morgan and Ben debriefing in some way. It wasn't as if it had left the space open to continue onto the next book as it was only relevant to this story. I didn't not like it, it was just different to what I had expected. However, I did thoroughly enjoy this thrill-ride and look forward to the next installment for which I hope we don't have too long to wait...

I thoroughly recommend the entire Morgan Brookes series.

I would like to thank #HelenPhifer, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheirBurningGraves in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: Silent Angel by Helen Phifer

Silent Angel (Detective Morgan Brookes #7) by Helen Phifer
Genre: Crime fiction, Crime thriller, Police procedural
Read: 30th September 2022
Published: 28th September 2022

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

The girl’s head is bent as if in prayer, her hands bound tightly together at the wrist. Her bare feet are still against the cold sand, the last thing she ever felt before she breathed her last…

When the body of a teenage girl is found in Rydal Falls’ churchyard, Detective Morgan Brookes abandons her own birthday to attend the scene. In the dim evening light, Morgan can just make out the girl wrapped in a pristine white sheet and is certain she’s been left here for them to find.

The autopsy identifies the girl as sixteen-year-old Shea Wilkinson, and Morgan’s heart cracks with sorrow. The beautiful teenager has been missing for weeks, could she have been suffering all this time? When she learns the sand on Shea’s feet is from a nearby island, Morgan leaves immediately, determined to find the killer’s hiding place and stop them in their tracks.

But scouring the windswept beach, Morgan can’t find any sign that Shea was ever there. And then her phone rings with devastating news. Another girl has gone missing, a young nurse called Milly with the same blonde hair and blue eyes as Shea.

Morgan won’t rest until she has returned the kind, cheerful girl to her distraught parents. But Milly was last seen chatting to one of Morgan’s colleagues on the force… Refusing to think the worst, can she trace the clues and get inside the mind of the most cunning killer of her career, before another innocent life is lost?

An absolutely addictive page-turner! Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Lisa Regan and Rachel Abbott.

MY THOUGHTS:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Helen Phifer's latest Morgan Brookes crime thriller SILENT ANGEL.

I'm a big fan of Helen Phifer and was thrilled to dive into Morgan Brookes' latest escapade. Although this is the seventh in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone and you don't really miss out on anything. Although having met the characters from the beginning you are able to get more of a feel for them with each installment so if you get a chance to go back and start from the beginning, then go for it! You won't be disappointed.

Admittedly, I found it difficult to get into this one not due to anything the author may or may not have done but because of the headspace I have currently found myself in with my personal life...although reading is a wonderful escape for the most part, I found it hard to keep up due to my own circumstances. But SILENT ANGEL is still an entertaining fast paced crime thriller and fans are reunited with their favourite characters once again.

It's Morgan's birthday and she and partner Ben have booked the weekend off to celebrate, beginning with an enjoyable and relaxing night out. But the crims don't work regular 9 to 5 hours and Ben had hardly stepped out of the shower when a phone call comes in about a body found in a churchyard...and in the middle of a power cut. The body is that of a young girl but her age is difficult to determine due to decomposition. The post mortem reveals the girl's identity as that of missing 17 year old Shea Wilkinson who disappeared from Blackpool around four weeks ago. She had been dead for around three of those weeks, so what did the killer do with her in the week after her initial disappearance? And since her body has only just turned up, where has she been in the meantime? She certainly wasn't in the graveyard just a few days ago on Mother's Day when the place would have been swarming with loved ones paying respects to their mothers or grandmothers.

Whilst investigating Shea's murder, another young girl the same age disappears after the church spring fete held in the grounds of the retirement home just across from the church in which the first body had been found. Milly works as a health aid at the home and has been excitedly planning her upcoming 18th birthday in which she intends to include the residents of the home in which she works. Morgan's suspicions immediately fall of the new vicar who sparks Morgan's antennae that something with him is not quite right.

But then one of their own disappears and the race is on find both Milly and their colleague before fate intervenes and it's too late. Morgan refuses to give up and continues to search for both of them despite her boss removing her from the investigation and placing her colleagues, partner Ben and sassy Amy on compassionate leave, and shipping her off to another station to work out of. Morgan is sure the incidents are all linked and the same person is responsible for them all. But who? Morgan is determined to find out whatever the cost.

Helen Phifer delivers another exciting installment in this edge of your seat series. I love how Ben and Morgan's relationship has developed and she has bit the bullet and moved in with him at last. I love each of the recurring characters and their unique personalities, bringing a fresh and vibrant feel to otherwise grim circumstances. I love Declan, the pathologist, and his quirky assistant who always has a new hair colour with each book, CSI Wendy as well Ben's own team of himself, Morgan, Amy and Des. The jury's still out on their new DI Marcell (Marc) Howard who entered in the previous book. I think I miss their old DI, who sadly retired, as much as Ben and Morgan do.

I love the location of Cumbria and the Lakes District, taking in the small locales around the beautiful setting I can just about visualise despite never having been there. I always look forward to what Helen Phifer brings us next, whether it be a standalone or another Morgan Brookes. Either way, I'm never disappointed.

I would like to thank #HelenPhifer, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #SilentAngel in exchange for an honest review.

The beam shines around the dark room, lighting up the woman in sky-blue pyjamas lying on the couch. But she doesn’t wake under the bright glow, she isn’t sleeping at all…

When a concerned neighbour reports a woman missing, Detective Morgan Brookes squeezes through the stiff front door to find the woman dead. At first, the case appears unsuspicious, but something about the scene unsettles Morgan. Every clock in the house has been stopped, every mirror covered, and the woman seems physically unharmed except for one missing lock of hair.

Shirley Kelly was loved by her friends and hated by her ex-husband and his new wife, but they have an iron-clad alibi, and Morgan is certain that the scene-staging holds a vital clue. She’s devastated to be proved right when another woman is killed, and her home arranged in the same way. The only difference is that the second victim has been stabbed, using a knife from Shirley’s own kitchen…

The team can’t find a connection between the two women, but Morgan is sure that there is a deadly pattern to the killer’s actions. She hunts through each woman’s past until she finds the link: years ago, they both worked for a woman called Evelyn Reynolds, before tragedy struck her young family. But what has made them targets now? Morgan knows this twisted case is far from over, can she find the final clue before the clock stops for the next name on the killer’s list?

An absolutely gripping, mile-a-minute read. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Lisa Regan and Rachel Abbott!

MY THOUGHTS:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Helen Phifer's latest crime thriller SLEEPING DOLLS.

I'm a huge fan of Helen's Dr Beth Adams series as well as this one and always eagerly await the next installment. She can always be counted on to deliver a spine-tingling thriller that has readers on the edge of their seats gripped by the unfolding events with every page. SLEEPING DOLLS is no different in that it is gripping, addictive and fast paced from start to finish. But for me, I found it surprisingly lacking the usual elements that draw readers in at the start and leave them breathless by the end. Don't get me wrong, I still loved it but I was a little disappointed at the same time.

DC Morgan Brookes is back after her near fatal attack at the end of the last book which saw her biological father and escaped serial killer Gary Marks die in her arms. Finally relinquishing her tenancy on her flat, Morgan has moved in with Ben as the two have finally stopped dancing around the inevitable. I have to say I missed Morgan's quirky neighbour from upstairs (whose name escapes me just now). She was always an interesting addition to the story.

After arriving at the station and the newly rebranded CID to CAST to find the office empty, Morgan hears about a call to check on the welfare of a woman after a neighbouring rang in complaining about a smell emanating from her flat. She advises Control that she is also enroute and she fears what she is about to walk into. Squeezing through the small opening of the door that has a rug preventing it from opening fully, Morgan finds the lifeless form of Shirley Kelly laying on her sofa. At first glance, nothing appears suspicious but something in Morgan's gut tells her that something is off. Something about the scene unsettles her. Then she see the clock has stopped at six and the mirror has been covered. And although the woman seems physically unharmed, a patch of hair that has been cut from her head. Very unsettling indeed.

A short time later, a second woman is killed. Even more chilling is that her house is arranged in the same way. But what is troubling is this woman had called police just an hour before believing there to be someone in her house but everything was deemed sound and the house clear of intruders. So what had happened to this woman in the short time between when the police had left her and when they returned? Was someone hiding somewhere in the house after all? And, more importantly, what connects these two women?

Morgan and Ben are baffled by the unfolding events and who could possibly be behind them. They question friends and witnesses in an effort to glean any information about the two women they can. Whilst in the midst of everything they are dealing with comes their new DI, Marcel Howard (Marc), who arrives a week before he is due to start as well as in something of a flurry. All the women in the nick are immediately drawn in by hus charm and good looks whilst Ben isn't so sure. And the Marc ruffles a few feathers and steps on some toes leaving Ben livid. Who is this man and where has he come from? And who the hell does he think he is?

Just when Morgan and Ben think they are never going to catch a break, they are thrown a lifeline in some intel Morgan has garnered in passing. Then it's all systems go as the team take their places in the respective takedown of the person behind these unsettling murders. But nothing is as it seems and of course nothing goes according to plan in this fast paced twisted tale that is both chilling and creepy.

With plenty of red herrings and twists, SLEEPING DOLLS is an addictive fast paced thriller that is the sixth installment in the brilliant Morgan Brookes series. There is plenty going on but with Helen's easy style it is still very easy to read and follow the story. It does differ to her previous books in which there is little from other aspects, which I missed greatly from this installment. I love how the reader is usually given glimpses from other perspectives throughout and with the exception of one of the victims prior to her death, a few flashbacks to 1989 and the killer themselves near the end, the book is mostly from a procedural perspective. It is the one aspect I found disappointing in this book. The only other disappointing factor was the identity of the killer. Without revealing any spoilers, I felt it was a bit out of nowhere with nothing really linking them to murders or the story.  Maybe if there were more of the various aspects peppered throughout, like in previous books, the loose ends that lead to the killer would make more sense.

Despite my disappointment, I did enjoy SLEEPING DOLLS and it certainly reflected Helen's usual fast paced addictive writing complete with her easy style. Not to mention her element of creepy undertones she likes to throw in now and again. The old house that features in this story reminded me Lake View House in her standalone thriller of the same name.

With its creepy undertones, SLEEPING DOLLS will definitely pique readers' curiosity and have fans cheering for their heroine. And although I was a little disappointed, it didn't ruin my enjoyment of what it is essentially another spine-tingling thriller from this talented author!

MY REVIEW:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Helen Phifer's chilling standalone thriller LAKEVIEW HOUSE.

I'm a huge fan of Helen's Dr Beth Adams and DC Morgan Brookes series but this is the first standalone of hers I have encountered and I was excited for the opportunity to read and review it. So did it live up to my expectations?

I must say, WOW - I was impressed. LAKEVIEW HOUSE was thrilling, chilling and edge of your seat throughout. The tension builds almost from the very beginning and it does not let up at all throughout. The short snappy chapters keep that tension building and building until I thought I would burst! And the pace moves at a breakneck speed, giving you whiplash when the big reveal comes and leave you open-mouthed resembling a goldfish going "what the...?" No way! I did NOT see that coming in a million years. Hats off to Helen for hoodwinking me so completely I was bowled over and lost for words.

The story begins with a creepy prologue that we just know is going to lead somewhere equally thrilling and probably chill us to the bone. It is short and to the point, leaving no room for misinterpretation. And then we meet Maddy.

Having fled a controlling and abusive relationship, Maddy needed somewhere to lay low for a while in the hope that her ex, Connor, would soon give up looking for her. Her best friend Stella sends her a link to the perfect escape - a lakeview house in the Lake District who are in need of a live-in caretaker while renovations are undertaken on the centuries old crumbling mansion on Lake Thirlmere. Site unseen, bar the photos on the internet (not always a good idea), Maddy packs her bags into her ancient VW Beetle and makes the journey from London to Lakeview House in Cumbria.

Almost at once, Maddy falls in love with the crumbling mansion knowing that it would have some stories to tell. But the electrics leave a little to be desired and there is next to no phone signal and internet? Forget it. It's perfect, Maddy thinks. The perfect place for her to get cracking on the sequel to her first successful book she needs to have written and submitted by the looming deadline. While the sprawling house must have about thirty rooms, Maddy finds herself a bedroom overlooking the beautiful Lake Thirlmere with French doors leading onto a balcony where she promises herself she will breakfast each morning. The setting could not be more perfect.

And then, strange things start happening. Things that go bump in the night; whispers and music emanating from downstairs; a sodden wedding dress left on her doorstep; vivid dreams that are all too real that tell her something sinister happened in this very house. And then she meets Alfie, a teenager with an innocent demeanour who is younger than his years, who alludes to something called "the lake people". But as the days turn into nights, Maddy begins to question her decision to cut herself off in the middle of nowhere with no phone reception or help nearby, should something happen to her. Especially when it becomes clear that someone is trying to frighten her. But who? She doesn't know anyone really. She has only met sexy Seth, kooky Glenys and her adorable son Alfie. And Stella is the only one who knows where she is. Even Connor doesn't know...or does he?

Meanwhile back in London, Stella has made some stupidly prized decisions which has left her black and blue and fearing for Maddy's safety. She knows she must alert her friend as to the possible danger that awaits her but Maddy isn't answering her phone. Alongside Joe, Stella decides to make her own journey to the Lake District and warn Maddy...hopefully before Connor gets to her. Because Connor will stop at nothing to catch up with Maddy and teach her a lesson she will never forget.

The story unfolds through short and snappy chapters which keeps things moving at a brisk pace. For 483 pages, it is an incredibly quick read that I devoured in almost one sitting. Everything about LAKEVIEW HOUSE had me enthralled - the setting, the haunted house, the unexplained occurrences, the sexy pub owner, the deranged killer, the controlling stalker ex - it was everything and more that I could want in an atmospheric fast paced and chilling thriller. But what secrets lay below the depths as well as within the crumbling walls of Lakeview House? The hint of the paranormal lingers within the pages of this tense read leaving the reader pondering is there something else at play here? Or is with a stalker ex on her tail and a killer silently watching her, is Maddy just a little too close for comfort?

LAKEVIEW HOUSE is a creepy tale that is atmospheric and mysterious centring around an isolated decrepit old house with something of a tragic past. What more could you want in a thriller? While Maddy has no idea of the house's past, her fear radiates on the pages as Helen Phifer's influences through Stephen King filter through...particularly with references to Derry, Maine and Pennywise the clown. While it is not a horror as such it certainly has elements akin to those found in the horror genre. It is most certainly creepy at any rate.

The story continues to move quickly as I read long into the night, unable to put it down. Everything about LAKEVIEW HOUSE is addictive and engaging...and I could predict nothing. I had no idea where it was going or how it would end up. And I certainly did not see the big reveal! That knocked me for a six sideways. Some parts may not be entirely believable but this is fiction. It is to engage, entertain and enjoy. It doesn't have to be real. But the hairs on my neck were definitely standing on end due to the chill factor...and I'm not talking about the temperature.

LAKEVIEW HOUSE is a slow burn initially that picks up pace almost at once moving at a breakneck speed throughout as the story becomes much much darker and incredibly chilling. There's certainly a lot going on despite only having a handful of characters. If you like a quick read with psychological thrills and chills in an atmospheric setting and a touch of ghost story, then you are sure to love LAKEVIEW HOUSE.

Easily rated 5 stars hands down. Highly recommended as a perfect escapism read and for fans of Ruth Ware and C.L. Taylor.
