DESCRIPTION:

She didn’t see it coming . . . And neither will you.

Bryden and Sam have it all - thriving careers, a smart apartment in a luxury condo, supportive friends and a cherished daughter. The perfect life for the perfect couple.

Then Sam receives a call at his office. Bryden – working from home that day - has failed to collect their daughter from daycare.

Arriving home with their little girl, he finds his wife’s car in the underground garage. Upstairs in their apartment her laptop is open on the table, her phone nearby, her keys in their usual place in the hall.

Except Bryden is nowhere to be seen. It’s as if she just walked out.

How can she have disappeared from her own home? And did she even leave the building at all?

With every minute that passes – and as questions swirl around their community – Bryden and Sam’s past seems a little less perfect, their luxury condo less safe, their friends, neighbours and relatives no longer quite so reliable . . .

MY THOUGHTS:

She didn't see it coming...but will you...?

Bryden and Sam have the perfect life. Happily married with a gorgeous three year old daughter Clara and a stunning condo in an exclusive complex. Both are successful in their well-paid jobs, have supportive friends and family, they are saving for a house and trying for a baby sibling for Clara. The perfect life for the perfect couple.

But neither of them saw what was coming...least of all Bryden.

One afternoon, Sam receives a call at the office alerting him to the fact that Bryden has failed to collect Clara from daycare. Bryden was working at home that day and left explicit instructions that no one call as she had plenty to do and needed the peace to do it in. She often thought she got more work done at home than in the office and fortunately her employers were fine with that. Sam tries and fails to reach Bryden, racing to pick up Clara himself. He arrives home with their little girl, calling out for Bryden. Her car was still in the garage downstairs, her laptop is open and in sleep mode, her mobile phone is on the table and her keys are in their usual place. All signs point to Bryden having just stepped out, soon to return.

But Bryden doesn't return. She has seemingly vanished without a trace.

Police are called and as the minutes stretch into hours then days, questions swirl within the community, their friends, family and even online. Suddenly holes are being picked in their carefully curated lives that is seemingly not so perfect after all. And nobody - not their friends, not their neighbours and not their family - appears quite so reliable.

No one is safe from the police's persistent probing as they peck at everyone's life and their alibis in their efforts to unravel the mystery of the missing woman and the truth behind what really happened to her.

There are a lot of characters to contend with but that's to keep us guessing which of them are responsible. Too few leave few surprises as it could only be one of however few there may be. Too many and we get bogged down and can't keep track of who's who. But this had the right amount, I think, to keep us on our toes.

The family: Bryden, Sam, Clara, Lizzie (the sister), Donna and Jim (the parents)
The friends: Paige, Angela (also a neighbour)
The neighbours: Angela, Tracey and Hank
The community: Derek, Alice, Kayly, Michael
The police: Jayne and Det Kilgour (and a few others in the beginning) but these two were the investigating officers

Police procedurals have a danger of being too bogged down in procedure that can have a snore-effect if it's too droning or too confusing with too many aspects. But this had the right balance of procedural and everything else that was going on to keep the pace moving quickly whilst giving us the chance to figure it out ourselves.

It was clear from the beginning who were the psychopaths of the story - but did that make them guilty? Almost everyone had a secret - but, did that make them guilty? And some were completely unlikeable - but again, did that make them guilty.

She didn't see it coming...but did you...?

In a word...yes! I wasn't as surprised as Bryden was. I had my own suspicions, for various reasons, and I kept changing my mind as to who I thought was responsible. I had three on my list - one of which was quickly eliminated (as much as I would have liked them to be the guilty party). The other two remained on my list throughout the duration until something clicked and made me look at them more closely. But with everything Shari throws at you, I could be forgiven for being indecisive about one or the other. BOTH looked equally guilty in my eyes and I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been my other suspect either.

Bryden disappears very early on in the story. I think she has just the one maybe two chapters, as well as the prologue, before she disappears and we're plunged headlong into a missing person's case that throws up all sorts of theories and red herrings. Shari's style is binge-worthy and utterly addictive from start to finish complete with cunning and tension-filled suspense on every page. Short snappy chapters filled with so much family drama alongside buried secrets, manipulative lies and dastardly deception that are paramount in any domestic thriller completing the tangled web that this thrilling tale is.

Whatever Shari has next, I'll be there with bells on!

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

Nothing ever happens in sleepy little Fairhill, Vermont.

The teenagers get their kicks telling ghost stories in the old graveyard. The parents trust their kids will arrive home safe from school. Everyone knows everyone. Curtains rarely twitch. Front doors are left unlocked.

But this morning all of that will change.

Because Diana Brewer isn’t lying safely in her bed where she belongs. Instead she lies in a hayfield, circled by vultures, discovered by a local farmer.

How quickly a girl becomes a ghost. How quickly a town of friendly, familiar faces becomes a town of suspects, a place of fear and paranoia.

Someone in Fairhill did this. Everyone wants answers.

And one innocent question could be deadly.

MY THOUGHTS:

Nothing ever happens in Fairhill, Vermont...until it does...

Not your average thriller by Shari Lapena but a pageturner just the same. This time we're taken to Fairhill, a sleepy little town in Vermont where everyone knows each other and nothing ever happens...until it does.

A farmer is working his fields when he notices the circling of vultures over one of his fields and thinking he may have a dead cow or some other animal on his land, he goes to investigate. Nothing prepares him for the horror that assails him. The visceral disemboweled remains of teenager Diana Brewer, her eyes pecked out by the feathered ferals.

The days starts off as normal for teenagers in Fairhill as they head off to school, avoid their parents at all costs and basically anything that is everything to a teenager. Riley Mead is worried though. She has texted Diana several times this morning and she has not responded...which is unlike Diana. She wants to know how she got on with boyfriend Cameron the night before. And then when Riley gets to school, she discovers that Diana is not there. And she does not arrive, making Riley worry more.

And then the principal knocks on their classroom door. The police are here. Diana has been found murdered. Riley's world falls apart. She and her friend Evan, Diana's two best friends, work to support each other and Diana's mother through this terrible ordeal. Who could have done this? And why?

Investigations reveal a creepy customer at the Home Depot where Diana worked, who gave her an inordinate amount of attention which made her uncomfortable. Is he responsible for Diana's death? And some inappropriate behaviour by someone in authority - someone who should be trusted - is also revealed. Could they be responsible for Diana's demise? Who would do such a thing? Diana was popular and well liked. She would do anything for anybody. Why would somebody kill her?

The story unfolds from various third person perspectives - from Riley to Evan to Diana's mother to Cameron and his parents  to Diana's various teachers to the police and persons of interests. It has a touch of supernatural to it with Diana suspended between her life and her untimely death as she struggles to recall what happened to her on that night and watches with pain the heartache her loved ones are going through.

While it is not one of Shari Lapena's best, it was a pageturner all the same and I devoured it in good time. It was a fast paced read with short snappy chapters that kept it moving nicely. Despite it dragging a little, I love Shari's writing style which made the story such an addictive read.

DESCRIPTION:

Welcome to Stanhope! A safe neighborhood. A place for families.

William Wooler is a family man, on the surface. But he’s been having an affair, an affair that ended horribly this afternoon at a motel up the road. So when he returns to his house, devastated and angry, to find his difficult nine-year-old daughter, Avery, unexpectedly home from school, William loses his temper.

Hours later, Avery’s family declares her missing.

Suddenly Stanhope doesn’t feel so safe. And William isn’t the only one on his street who’s hiding a lie. As witnesses come forward with information that may or may not be true, Avery’s neighbors become increasingly unhinged.

Who took Avery Wooler?

Nothing will prepare you for the truth.

MY THOUGHTS:

Everyone has a secret
Everyone is a suspect
Everyone is lying
...but someone on this street knows the truth...

Why has it taken me so long to dive into another Shari Lapena thriller again? I read her debut "The Couple Next Door" which I loved...and then what? I forgot to read her again? Well, add her to my auto-request list because she sure knows how to deliver a doozy of a twisted tale! Does anyone do family dysfunction better? And honestly, it's very difficult to hoodwink me because as a seasoned mystery thriller fan, I see all and know all...lol But with this one, I had no bleeping clue!

Stanhope, New York, is a quiet suburban neighbourhood. The perfect place for families. And Connaught Street, the quiet little street, is where it is all happening. Dr William Wooler, charming and charismatic and very good looking, is having a secret affair with neighbour Nora Blanchard who also happens to be a volunteer at the hospital he works in. Both a married with children but both are in love with the other and not their spouses. But when Nora abruptly ends their affair one day after a little afternoon delight, William doesn't feel like returning to work so decides to head home for some peace and quiet and some time to think. Only when he arrives, he finds his 9 year old daughter Avery in the kitchen attacking a packet of biscuits. Why is she home early from school when she should be at choir practice?

Avery is not an easy child. She has ADHD and behavioural problems, is oppositional, moody, manipulative and never listens or heeds the rules. At 9 years old, she isn't allowed to walk home by herself and should have waited for her brother Michael who is 12 and has his own set of keys. So why is she home? When William questions her, she is defiant in her answer and in a fit of rage he slaps her so hard she falls to the ground. Immediately regretting his action, he apologises and begs her forgiveness. But Avery just sits there staring past him and utters not a word. Shamefully embarrassed, William jumps into his car and drives away to process what just happened...on top of Nora also ending their affair.

When Michael goes to meet Avery and learns she was sent home for being disruptive just minutes into choir practice, he rushes home in the hope that his sister is ok. She isn't supposed to walk home by herself and should have waited for him to finish basketball practice but Avery dances to her own tune and frequently does as she pleases. He bursts through the door calling her name but she doesn't respond. He searches every room but the house is empty. Avery is not there. He calls his mother frantically who returns home and calls the police.

Avery is missing.

Detectives Bledsoe and Gully are tasked with investigating Avery's disappearance and are determined to find her. Leaving no stone unturned, they uncover a wealth of secrets where everyone is hiding something. But which of them knows more than they are letting on? Who witnessed Avery's disappearance? Who saw what no one else did?

And above all, what really happened to Avery?

One thing is for sure, I'm glad I don't live on Connaught Close! Everyone appears to be hiding something...and everyone has secrets. But how far would you go to keep them from bubbling to the surface? For some, it seems they will do anything.

A thoroughly entertaining and addictive thriller from start to finish, EVERYONE HERE IS LYING (a wholly apt title) is filled with unlikeable characters and underhand motives. It's short snappy chapters keep the pace moving at a rapid rate and could easily be read in one sitting. As each of the layers are slowly peeled back, theories are revealed and suspects quickly emerge. But Lapena keeps you guessing until the end. With smoke and mirrors, she misdirects readers with a deft hand, cleverly weaving the threads together for a jaw-dropping twist. Many readers felt the ending was rushed but I didn't think so. I thought it was cleverly crafted and perfectly timed bringing it to a superb conclusion.

It should be said that not all with ADHD are like Avery. That is just one of her many issues that largely attribute to her behaviour. And although she is only 9 years old, she is very self aware and her behaviour and intelligence are indicative of someone who much older than her years. This does lend a little suspension of belief to be attributed when reading. I put that down to a little poetic licence which, in this case, is needed.

Overall, a difficult book to review (because there is so much more I would love to say) but a fantastic read that I simply devoured!

REVIEW: The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Read: 7th August 2017
Purchase: Amazon

★★★★ 4 stars

While the review on the cover stated that it was "a fast paced thriller", I can only agree on that score from about a third of the way in. Honestly, I struggled with this book at first as for the most part, for the first third of it anyway, nothing is set outside of Anne and Marco's house...with the exception of the opening dinner party next door, and didn't seem to be going anywhere. I didn't even like most of the characters, except Marco. I kind of felt sorry for him. And Detective Rasbach. He was a smart shrewd detective and nothing got by him. Everyone else was either pathetic or irritating.

The book did begin to pick up about halfway through, though I still struggled to find anything likeable about the other characters. I couldn't stand Anne's step father and her mother gave the appearance of stoic strength but about as much warmth as a dead rat. Anne was basically pathetic, and though as her own story began to unfold, I did begin to feel sorry for her but then found myself wondering was it all an act?

In all, the story was pretty predictable with the events unfolding that none of it was a surprise to me. In fact I had guessed the identity of "whodunnit" and even why. It just became irritating when confronted with the truth more lies were thrown in because it was more than obvious it was really the truth and there was no point in denying it.

But despite this, I did enjoy the second half...if only to see the truly guilty get their comeuppance. Only the last chapter was a surprise. But the final lines left me wondering...was it just an act?

Enjoy the read and judge for yourself.
