REVIEW: My Husband's Affair by Ruth Heald

My Husband's Affair by Ruth Heald
Genre: Domestic thriller, Domestic suspense
Read: 4th April 2024
Published: 10th April 2024

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

We promised forever. But only one of us will leave this marriage alive…

I thought I had the perfect marriage. But as our beautiful children sleep soundly in the next room, I stare at the messages between my husband Rob and another woman, their promises to run away together bringing tears to my eyes. My heart stops when I see the latest one: ‘Leave my wife to me. I’ll get rid of her.’

My blood runs cold. I know this woman. I’ve let her into my home, where she’s bounced my rosy-cheeked baby on her knee. She could ruin my life in moments – she knows things about me even Rob doesn’t…

They think they can get rid of me so easily. They think they can just tear apart the perfect life we’ve built. But they've made a mistake underestimating me. He doesn't know I've uncovered his secrets. And now I know just enough to destroy him.

I can play the perfect wife for just a little longer. I’ll do anything to protect my children and my life. And he has no idea just how far I’ll go…

A completely gripping psychological thriller about unthinkable betrayal by those you love the most, perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Claire McGowan and The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose.

MY THOUGHTS:

We promised forever...but only one of us will leave this marriage alive...

I've read all of Ruth Heald's books and she is one of my favourite authors...although I have to admit that this is not one of my favourite books of hers, it is still a thrilling read that keeps you guessing throughout. This one is about a wife's reaction to discovering her husband's affair...and the lengths she will go to save herself.

Jen lives a charmed life. Married to Rob, a high end estate agent in West London, with three children - Lottie, Jack and baby Ruby. And together they live in the penthouse suite of an exclusive apartment block for which Rob had the contract to sell from the developer. Although she would love to return to work, her life is filled with the children and making their house a home.

It all starts little by little. Discrepancies with their apartment that should have been safe but turns out are not. And then she smells an unfamiliar perfume on Rob's shirt...but writes it off as having been in contact with a client shrouded in the stuff. That has to be it.

But the late nights. The trips away. It's just client drinks and business, right? And then she discovers a burner phone, a passport, thousands in euros...and the messages. Rob is planning to leave them. But that's not the half of it. Rob has painted himself into a corner and thus delivers Jen an ultimatum completely out of left field. Think canoe man. But Jen has other ideas...

Another intriguing read by Ruth Heald that had me guessing throughout. The ending did let it down in the end as I'd expected something a little more jaw-dropping and unexpected. But it was still a thrilling read with a character you just love to hate!

I would like to thank #RuthHeald, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #MyHusbandsAffair in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Party on Laurel Street by Ruth Heald

The Party on Laurel Street by Ruth Heald
Genre: Psychological thriller
Read: 30th June 2023
Published: 28th June 2023

★★★★ 3.5 stars (rounded up)

DESCRIPTION:

Only she knows what really happened that night…

It was meant to be a time of celebration, of neighbours chatting over sparkling glasses of wine, enjoying the decadent surroundings of the huge mansion house which overlooked all the houses on Laurel Street. But then my troubled friend Gabbie has a heated argument with her husband. She leaves the party and disappears without a trace.

Gabbie’s neighbours rally round, painfully aware that Laurel Street has already had its share of tragedy. Years ago, when we were children, my best friend Erin vanished, never to be seen again, after having a secret party in the woods with me and Gabbie as our families celebrated the new year.

I want Gabbie to be found safe. I need her to come home. Because if she doesn’t, I know that all eyes will be on me as they were years ago.

But then I discover that my husband Luke was the last person to see Gabbie alive and I’m reminded of all the times I saw them getting close. As much as I pushed it to the back of my mind, I have to ask, can I really trust them? And worse, is someone about to make me pay for the secret I’ve been keeping for so long?

A totally unputdownable and gripping psychological thriller with a shocking twist for fans of Lisa Jewell, T.M. Logan and Louise Candlish.

MY THOUGHTS:

Only she knows what really happened that night...

Well...who would want to live on Laurel Street? Not me, that's for sure! But it made for an ideal setting. Nosy neighbours and all that. Roz was especially a thorn in my side with her exacting ideas for perfection on the street.

The story begins with a twenty five year old mystery of missing ten year old Erin who disappeared on New Years Eve party after she and her friends decided to hold a little party of their own in the woods. However, Erin brought her rucksack with her and was intent on running away. The question is...did she?

Some two decades later, Mel is returning to Laurel Street with her husband Luke and their one year old Lily, moving into the house she shared with her grandmother during her childhood. Since her gran passed she had left her house jointly to Mel and her mother, Angela, who was living in Spain. As soon as Mel arrived she was greeted by her childhood friend Gabbie who had also recently returned to the street with her husband and living in the house that Mel and Gabbie could only covet as children. But the shadow of Erin's disappearance still loomed largely over them.

At the end of the street sat the gothic manor house in which Erin had grown up and her mother Tamsin still lives. Every year Tamsin held a memorial in the village church for Erin. Mel continued a friendship with Tamsin over the years, the woman still clearly mourning the loss of her daughter with no closure and no idea what happened to her. When Tamsin decides to throw a party for the street, Mel steps in to help her organise and set up. Everyone in the street comes and it is a huge success. Until a drunken argument with her husband sees Gabbie storm out of the house...and vanishes without a trace.

At first, Mel thinks Gabbie has just left her husband as that is what he told her. But then all her calls to her friend not only go unanswered but go straight to voicemail, as if the phone is switched off. After two weeks and still no word, Mel is convinced something has happened to her and goes to the police.

The police presence on the street rakes up all old memories again from twenty five years before. They didn't find Erin then...can they find Gabbie now? Is Gabbie's disappearance linked to Erin's? Someone knows something and soon secrets begin to surface turning everyone's world upside down.

I have read all of Ruth Heald's books and I love her work though I would have to say that this one was less like a thriller than her others. It was a slow burn as the story gained momentum and was definitely intriguing but not one of her best. I did enjoy it for the most part, despite some of the unlikeable characters.

Overall, a compelling read dripping with secrets and tension.

I would like to thank #RuthHeald, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #ThePartyOnLaurelStreet in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Nanny by Ruth Heald

The Nanny by Ruth Heald
Genre: Domestic thriller, Domestic drama, Psychological thriller, Suspense
Read: 11th September 2022
Published: 8th September 2022

★★★★★ 5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

As I clutched baby Chloe’s blanket, tears streamed down my face as I remembered what happened the night she disappeared. Looking up at the apartment block I once called home, my mind was crowded with memories. David’s words echoed in my head, telling me to get out and never come back. I understood why: our mistake had ruined everything.

When I accepted a job working as a nanny for David and Julie and their young children, I was excited to be making my own way in the world. I bonded with baby Chloe instantly and would have done anything for her. She had David's thick, dark hair and smiling eyes. I fell in love with her and was excited for my future.

But when a terrible mistake led to Chloe disappearing, I was instantly blamed. With no evidence, I was let go and I returned home to rebuild my life.

Twenty years later and I am still haunted by what happened. I have a family of my own now and I’ve worked hard to be the best wife and mother I can be, but I’ve never forgotten the child who stole my heart.

Then a young woman arrives on my doorstep and the past secret that I have kept from my family comes hurtling into my present.

I try to tell myself that I am overreacting. But the woman in front of me looks so much like David. Who is she and why is she here? And if I welcome her in, will she want to be a part of my life, or destroy it?

A totally addictive psychological thriller that will have you reading late into the night. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, T.M. Logan and Shalini Boland.

MY THOUGHTS:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Ruth Heald's tense domestic thriller THE NANNY.

"For years you’ve been keeping a secret...But now she’s back..."

I fell in love with Ruth Heald with her explosive debut "The Mother's Mistake" and have thoroughly enjoyed each book since, with her stand outs being her debut, "The Woman Upstairs""I Know Your Secret" and "The Wedding". Now I can add THE NANNY to that list. Hands down another five star read. It is edgy, fast-paced and filled with plenty of tense moments and secrets in abundance. What's not to love?

Hayley Taylor is married to Swedish businessman Lars with a five year old daughter Alice. They have a happy marriage and the perfect life together. But Hayley has a secret...in fact, she has several. None of which she has told Lars about.

Twenty years before, in 1999, Hayley was a tourist travelling in Thailand when she landed a job as a live-in nanny for David and Julie McFarlane. Her role initially was to care for David's two daughters from his previous marriage, Eva and Emily, while their mother was recovering from a motorbike accident and until she could take the girls back to England with her. Julie, in the meantime, was heavily pregnant with her own daughter and had no time, nor desire, to care for the little girls who were just four and five.

When Julie's own daughter Chloe was born a few weeks later, Hayley's work then extended to also caring for the baby's needs from feeding to changing to bathing...to pretty much everything her mother should have been doing, Especially considering she had ten weeks maternity leave. But instead, she returned to work early and left all children in Hayley's capable care. Julie didn't have a maternal bone in her body. I often wondered why she even had a baby when she had no desire to actually care for and seemed to merely want her to get older so she could chat with her. Is it any wonder why it was Hayley that Chloe constantly looked for? Was soothed by? Not enough for Julie, she became jealous of her daughter's attachment to her nanny.

So when Chloe suddenly disappeared one evening, all eyes turned to Hayley. She was pulled in for questioning by the police but later released with not enough evidence against her. But David and Julie continued to blame her for their daughter's disappearance and Hayley returned to England with a cloud hanging over her of a time she would much rather forget. Which is exactly what she did.

Now married to Lars, who knows nothing of her experience in Thailand, Hayley keeps that aspect of her life firmly behind closed doors. So when they advertise for a lodger to help pay the bills, Hayley expected it to be the answer to their prayers, not the undoing of her past. Johanna answers the ad and when Hayley opens the door it's like looking into the past. And Johanna seems to be the perfect lodger. She is friendly, helpful and efficient, even assisting Hayley with Alice and her mother who has dementia and also lives with them.

But is Johanna too good to be true? And when things start going missing from her hidden trove of secrets she keeps stashed at the back of her cupboard, she starts to wonder what exactly has she opened herself up for?

But Johanna isn't her only problem. A student support worker at her place of work, Ryan, has decided to write a true crime book investigating the disappearance of baby Chloe in Thailand...and he wants Hayley to fill in the gaps for him. Hayley does her best to fob him off but Ryan won't be swayed and Hayley begins to wonder has her time finally run out?

What an intricate web Heald has woven with THE NANNY! The complex plot, the fast-paced narrative, the unreliable characters, the secrets, the lies, the seamless transition from the present to the past...and a reveal you won't see coming! It is page-turning and addictive from start to finish and I would have been finished sooner had it not been for our beloved Queen's sad passing.

The descriptions are vivid, the storyline realistic and the characters equally unreliable and untenable. The reader is transported to Thailand in an age before the widespread use of mobile phones or internet so one must imagine what it must have been like stuck there with no means of easy communication that we take for granted today. From the hot humid weather on the streets of Bangkok to the lush extravagance of her employers' apartment to present day London, we are completely absorbed throughout the seamless transition between past and present and both the storylines as they unfold. I had a theory which I thought was a little crazy at the time but was then shocked to discover I was spot on! From there, everything began to fall into place...and yet one mystery still remained. What happened to baby Chloe? Can you unravel the mystery before the big reveal?

I absolutely enjoyed THE NANNY and thoroughly recommend it to fans of Shalini Boland, Kim Slater, L.G. Davis and Kerry Wilkinson.

I would like to thank #RuthHeald, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheNanny in exchange for an honest review.

I couldn’t believe it when I got the call to offer me my dream job. It was right in the heart of the city with a flat provided. I jumped at the chance and within weeks I had made new friends and started to date a wonderful man. For the first time in years, I felt safe.

It’s a world away from the life I ran from…

But soon strange things begin to happen in my flat: odd noises in the night, the feeling that I’m being watched. When I discover an old dress hidden behind my wardrobe and wear it to work, the atmosphere chills instantly. The dress belonged to a girl my boss would rather forget. The girl before me who vanished without a trace.

MY REVIEW:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Ruth Heald's exciting new thriller THE NEW GIRL.

I've been a fan of Ruth Heald since her debut domestic thriller "The Mother's Mistake" which is just brilliant from start to finish. So naturally every new release of hers incites an excitement and anticipation of what's to come. This one promises fresh starts and new beginnings for the protagonist who has seen her fair share of ups and downs, not to mention disappointments. Unfortunately, this fresh start isn't what she was expecting.

THE NEW GIRL in this story is Sophie, who had escaped London once before after an incident at university for the safety of home in Dorset. But now she is ready to put the past behind her and move forward...beginning with a job at an ad agency in London. Unfortunately, her boyfriend Charlie doesn't see things in quite the same way. After celebrating ten years since their first kiss at the tender age of fourteen, Charlie springs a surprise on her he is sure she will love.

As he leads her to the cottage by the sea that was once his grandfather's, he proudly announces that he is doing it up for them to settle down and raise a family in. And then he pops the question. Sophie stalls. This isn't what she wants and she flees the house, taking refuge in her childhood home with her father. OK, so maybe Charlie was a bit presumptuous...but after ten years together if it was me I would have thought they'd get married too. And not to mention that cottage by the sea...and the sounds of the ocean through the window at night. To me, that is just pure heaven.

So instead of settling down in their sleepy seaside village in Dorset (which I would prefer to smelly crowded London, myself), Sophie sends out applications to London ad agencies in the hope of securing herself a job. When she is contacted by One Pure "something or other" (I forget the rest of the name) for an interview she can hardly believe it. She travels up to London and meets with James and Cassie, two of the founding members of the company, and together they hit it off. Sophie nails the interview and is offered the job. Better yet, she is offered a flat the company uses for their employees rent-free. Um...

Seriously, how naive can one person be? Hand-picked from a social media post to her dream job with a rent-free flat? Who take her shopping for food, clothing and furnishings? And her bosses just too good to be true? Does she not have any inkling whatsoever that something isn't right? Truly...if something seems too good to be true, then it generally is. But Sophie just welcomed it all with open arms and a naivete that was almost cringeworthy. She should have remembered that nothing comes for free...her experience with Charlie should have told her that. And yet...

And then Sophie begins to hear noises in the night, footsteps outside her door...when she is the only occupant in the building...and a dead rat on her doorstep. And she has the creepy feeling she is being watched. Do people actually feel that? Truly? Then she is approached by a woman claiming to have worked for the company before and she wants to talk to her...but Sophie isn't so sure. When the police approach her regarding her past, Sophie fears her secret is about to be exposed. And before long, Sophie isn't sure who she can trust.

And then she stumbles on a dead body in the flat below hers...

In all honesty, Sophie was too gullible for words. I mean, I generally take people at face value but she took it to a whole new level. She ignored all the red flags and neon signs flashing in her direction, even when warned, and basically dug herself in deeper. She was in a bit of a bind though...new job, new flat and no way of paying rent anywhere else in London except maybe a park bench. Is that why she ignored all the warning signs? Given at all she had endured I would have thought she'd have been more guarded and not so trusting. That went without saying...and yet here she was trusting complete strangers. Even when Charlie turned up several times, which was a little creepy to say the least, she trusted her new friends instead of him who'd she'd known half her life.

The plot was interesting enough but full of holes in my opinion because I really couldn't see a woman being that naive particularly after what she'd been through. Yes, it was a tad far-fetched but it was still fast paced and gripping enough to keep me engaged to the end. I wasn't surprised by the ending or the links to her past as I could see them from a mile off. I didn't trust anyone in the story and hoped Sophie wised up to them before it was too late. No one else is really worth writing about.

THE NEW GIRL is a creepy thriller that had my spidey senses tingling throughout despite my desire to shake some sense into the woman. Sophie has a vulnerability that stems from a previous trauma which has turned he into an unreliable judge of character. And now she's stuck in a flat alone with the threat of someone out there exposing something she would much rather keep hidden. Who can she trust? While Charlie was becoming a tad too clingy and overprotective, I still felt it was a case of better the devil you know than swimming in an ocean of sharks she could not see lurking in the shadows.

A relatively spine-tingling read, THE NEW GIRL is a thriller where you suspect everyone as you try to guess who is responsible. The twists may be unexpected or you may see them coming...it depends on how you read it all. The climax was nail-biting and somewhat exciting but the epilogue was a bit of a letdown as I had expected a bit more to come of things.

Overall, THE NEW GIRL is a reasonably enjoyable read that didn't quite have me on the edge of my seat but it was fast paced and gripping just the same. Didn't quite pack the same punch as the author's previous thrillers but still a good read.

I would like to thank #RuthHeald, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheNewGirl in exchange for an honest review.

MY REVIEW:

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Ruth Heald's addictive and compelling new thriller THE WEDDING.

I have been a fan of Ruth Heald since her debut "The Mother's Mistake" and with each new thriller she has kept us on our toes and gripped from start to finish. THE WEDDING is no different. I didn't even read the premise until long after I joined the tour, assured in the knowledge that I would enjoy the thrill ride I was sure she would take us on. And I wasn't wrong.

Thirty five year old Lauren has been dreaming about this day for years. Marrying Adam, her childhood sweetheart, with whom she'd grown up and has loved for eighteen years. Now, she sits in their flat between shifts as a busy A&E doctor, about to start their wedding invitations. The gorgeous photo of her and Adam that her best friend Zoe took for their engagement features on the invitations. It is their favourite photo - one that Adam keeps framed on his desk at the surgery. But the thought of her parents not being there for her perfect day brings a shadow over her happiness. Killed when she was 17 on a holiday in Thailand eighteen years ago, Lauren has always blamed herself for what had clearly been an accident. And when Adam returns home to find her in tears, he makes a suggestion to help put her mind at rest. A visit to their memorial and an invitation to their wedding, at which they will be in spirit and memory.

Now two months later, Lauren opens the card adorned with their favourite engagement photo, expecting to see a congratulatory message wishing them well in their upcoming wedding. But as she opens it, her smile turns into shock. Inside was a photograph of a doll with dark curly hair fanned around its face, piercing blue eyes and high cheekbones. A doll that looks like her. In a wedding dress that has been slashed and her neck cut. Just four words accompanied it...

"He doesn't love you."

And so begins a sequence of menacing events in the lead up to what is meant to be the happiest day of her life. Flowers with more than an unpleasant smell are left on her doorstep. A doll, just like the one from the card, is found floating in their bathtub filled with water tinged blood red. And then on her hen's night, Lauren is pushed down the stairs at a club and her phone disappears. Someone, it seems, wants to ruin their wedding plans. But who? Who doesn't want the loving couple to live happily ever after?

When her sister Tracey, who has been living in Thailand for the past eighteen years, returns to the UK for Lauren's hen night she brings her teenage daughter Jasmine whom she adopted after the 2004 tsunami which saw Jasmine's parents killed. Lauren and Tracey had been estranged for fifteen years since their parents' deaths and have only in the last couple of years have reconciled, putting the past behind them.

Meanwhile at the surgery, Adam is having a battle of his own. After a drunken night in the pub when Lauren was working nights, a patient has latched on to him and makes any excuse to see him. Although he has tried fobbing her off, she won't take no for an answer, claiming that that night had to mean something to him. Adam is faced with a quandary. Does he report the patient and risk his career? Or does he keep quiet and risk her going to the senior partners anyway? It soon becomes clear that Adam has not been entirely honest with Lauren about his past...among other things. Could he be the catalyst that started this whole chain of sinister events?

As things escalate and get darker, Lauren soon begins to question whether Adam is having an affair. But with who? His best friend Kiera is not interested in men...or is she? After a spectacular breakup with her partner and in tears, Adam invited her to come and stay with them in their spare room. Lauren knows he is only looking for his friend...or is he? Lauren isn't sure anymore. Everything that she thought she knew and trusted is being questioned.

As things go from bad to worse, the suspect pool deepens. Each one is plausible and believable in their own ways. And I loved deliberating over who it could be. I had three suspects in mind - each with their own motives. I had already written their backstories in my mind before Ruth presented it to us, so therefore I figured I was on the right track. Until it changed course. And so I narrowed it down again...to two...and then one. But while distracting us with a brightly colour red herring, another twist was thrown in making our heads spin. Was I right? Or was I wrong? Or was Ruth playing with us again?

THE WEDDING is a fun fast paced read that gets to the point without all the extra baggage weighing it down with long winded narratives and detailed descriptions. It's fast, it's fun and it's addictive from start to finish. If I didn't have so much going on I would have devoured this in one sitting! As it was, I had the bulk of it read in one leaving just two hours to complete it the following day. The plot is compelling, the story addictive. Nothing is dull or slow and although there may be some eye-rolling moments, THE WEDDING is entertaining with its dramatic danger, suspense and compelling twists making it an enjoyable quick read.

This is what reading is all about for me. Entertaining escapism in a fun and delightful read that is addictive and doesn't disappoint. Yes, it may be cliched but I don't care. The fun, for me, is in the ride. And if the author can give that to me and make it fun, thrilling and addictive then that's what makes it a five start read. Not to mention those short snappy chapters which keeps the pace moving at break-neck speed.

A fast delightful read that I did not want to put down, even when sleep was calling to me, THE WEDDING is predictably unpredictable that will have you turning the pages long into the night. Full of sabotage, shocks and twists, I would definitely recommend this book to fans of psychological thrillers with a fun fast pace.

I would like to thank #RuthHeald, #NetGalley, #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheWedding in exchange for an honest review.

I Know Your Secret by Ruth Heald

DESCRIPTION:

You’re not who you say you are. Neither is she.

She thinks she knows me.

She believes my marriage is falling apart at the seams, that my husband can barely look me in the eyes. She thinks I’m desperate for a baby, that my longing for a family keeps me up at night. As much as I hate to admit it, all of this is true.

She thinks I listen to her advice, that I care about her opinion. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Because she has no idea who I am. She has no clue that I know everything.

I know her secret. I know that she did the unforgivable. I know how many lives she ruined.

MY REVIEW:

“Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”

Beth is a therapist who specialises in marriage guidance counselling. But she wasn't always a therapist. Fifteen years ago, she was an art school teacher but was then fired after it was discovered she had crossed the boundaries between teacher and student without proper protocol. As a result, and the loss of the love of her life Nick, she had a mental breakdown and referred herself to a psychiatric unit for treatment.

Beth has never gotten over Nick, and yet she married another. Richard, also a therapist, was her tutor where she was training to be a counsellor. Red light much? When she fell pregnant with Charlie it was a surprise but one they welcomed and embraced. Now despite suffering her own heartbreak and losses and deciding to help others through therapy, Beth cannot save her own marriage. After having a meaningless fling, Richard moves out and Beth's life begins to crumble. She feels eyes watching her. She believes someone is following her. Her life is slowly falling apart. History, it seems, is repeating itself.

Is this who you would want to be your therapist??

As it happens, it turns out that she is exactly the therapist Danielle wants. But why?

New client Danielle has issues of her own. With bad facial scars from a fire a year before, she comes to Beth for marriage counselling...only her husband Peter did not turn up. Danielle claims he feels therapy would benefit her moreso than him and in her words, refuses to come. And yet, she is trying to save her marriage. As a successful and hardworking lawyer, Danielle yearns for a baby of her own but apparently her husband isn't so keen. They'd recently taken a break from their marriage but reunited soon after, deciding to work on the problems in their marriage. Yet...why isn't Peter attending the therapy sessions with his wife?

Beth begins to suspect Danielle is keeping something back. But then she isn't surprised as most clients do for fear of exposing themselves too much. However, Beth prides herself on being able to read her clients and be able to tell when they are keeping something from her or not being completely honest. But Danielle has her hoodwinked.

Then Danielle reveals how she sustained her third degree burns on her face a year ago. Beth is shocked. And when Danielle confesses that she is scared of Peter's temper, of what he might do should she end their marriage, Beth feels she cannot abandon her client in need. Despite blurring the boundaries as a teacher and knowing the fine line between clients and therapists, Beth crosses it anyway. If Danielle is in danger...

And then things go terribly wrong. If Beth thought her life was crumbling before, then it is completely falling apart now. Everything she has built in the fifteen years since she lost the love of her life and her job was disintegrating before her very eyes. And she has no idea how to stop it or who would do something like this. It appears Beth has been reported for misconduct with a client in befriending them. Not only that, someone has also reported her to social services for negligent care of her four year old son Charlie. Someone is stalking her. Someone sent her photographs of Richard with the woman he had a fling with and now she is convinced she knows who that someone is. Who wants to destroy her life and make her suffer? Who wants her to lose everything?

Richard is worried about her but she doesn't believe him. Why would he be worried about her when he was the one who left her and is now selling the house out from under her?

Is Beth imagining things? Is she delusional again? Who would go to so much trouble to orchestrate everything to change her life direction? Who would hate her that much?

Feeling completely alone, Beth cries and pours her heart out to Nick's photo, wishing that he was still here with her. How different her life would have been had he lived.

Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!

Secrets and lies. Lies and secrets. Deception, deception, deception. Ruth Heald has crafted a perfect psychological/domestic thriller with two unreliable narrators in such a way that we don't know who to believe. Both appear to be strong women with successful careers but BOTH have a lot to hide. Danielle is not who she says she is but then Beth isn't as honest as she pretends to be either. So what are they hiding? Unlike Beth, Danielle knows exactly who Beth is and why she has sought her out. Beth remains oblivious...as does the reader for a good portion of the book. But I'm a little more savvy than Beth. Although I was puzzled to begin with, I soon figured out their roles in the past and how they were linked.

Both women are clearly unstable. Whilst Danielle maintains an air of normality, no sooner has Richard left that Beth has pulled out her former lovers photo and places them on display in pace of her husband...the man she shared a life with and created a child with. Richard may have cheated on her but how could he compete with a ghost when Beth makes no secret of the fact that Nick was the love of her life?

And then there is Danielle's marriage. Her husband Peter really appears to care for her but she keeps pushing him away. Why? He clearly states that he doesn't think a baby is the answer to their problems and yet Danielle is so sure that it is. But she has a deeper secret that she has kept even from him. What will he do when he discovers the truth?

Told from the alternating perspectives of Beth and Danielle throughout, I KNOW YOUR SECRET may be Ruth Heald's third domestic thriller but she is cracking the genre with the likes of Kim Slater and Shalini Boland. I thoroughly enjoyed the guessing game she had us playing as I endeavoured to puzzle it all out. A bold and unique thriller, I KNOW YOUR SECRET is fast paced and edge of your seat throughout...and I loved every minute of it.

A brilliant read that is entertaining and addictive right from the start, I KNOW YOUR SECRET will have fans of Kim Slater, Shalini Boland and Sheryl Browne flipping the pages at the speed of light.

The Woman Upstairs (previously titled "Your Guilty Lies") by Ruth Heald
Genre: Psyhcological thriller
Read: 17th September 2019
Purchase: Amazon
(release date: 10th September 2019)

★★★★★ 5 stars

WOW! Still reeling from the moment I read the final chapter, THE WOMAN UPSTAIRS by Ruth Heald is a book I devoured easily in just over 24 hours. It is addictive, unputdownable and oh so twisted. Ruth had me hooked from the beginning that I quickly became invested in the lives of Katie and her twins.

Throughout the story there is an undercurrent of danger with a real sense of foreboding that had me waiting with baited breath wondering what was going to come next. And as readers, although we know something bad is going to happen, we are powerless to stop it as we are immersed into the storyline and absorbing every page. When I tweeted my thoughts upon finishing, Ruth told me she "wanted to capture that feeling you get in horror movies...when you know the heroine is walking into a trap, but you can't stop her!" And boy, did she succeed!

The story begins with Katie who is shocked to learn that she is pregnant...and even moreso when she discovers she's having twin girls. However, her relationship with Ian, the father, was only ever a casual thing and not all that serious...until now. Despite this unexpected turn of events, Ian is delighted and supportive and eager to start their family. As a property developer, Ian's business acquires houses in need of some work before renovating them and then selling them on at a profit. It is one of these houses that Ian has set aside for them to move into in an affluent part of London.

But when Katie arrives to move in, the house is nothing she expected. It is completely derelict, rat-infested, damp and uninhabitable. Heavily pregnant by this stage, Katie knows she can't stay there. She tries ringing Ian but the calls go unanswered. She calls her best friend with whom, up until now, she had flat-shared with. But Amy is distracted with a new tenant moving in and thinks Katie is just nervous about the move. Even Katie's mother refuses to help, unable to believe the house would be that bad. In the end, Katie has no one left to help and resigns herself to spending the night on the damp mattress on the upstairs bedroom floor.

When Ian arrives, he is as shocked as she is at the state of disrepair the house is in. Full of apologies, he moves Katie into a hotel and sets to work on renovating the house into some kind of living standard. It isn't long before an entire new state of the art kitchen is intalled as well as a new bathroom. The living room and two bedrooms upstairs are also painted with new furniture and fresh carpet, leaving the rest of the house to be completed as and when. Ian also thought Katie would like to choose the colours for the nursery so left that untouched. Katie is speechless. The house is beautiful. Filled with happiness and a surge of love for Ian, Katie new that this was the start of a new life together with their twins.

But soon, Katie becomes increasingly worried with Ian spending so much time at work, leaving her in the house on her own...with all its creaks and groans. Sometimes she even thinks she hears someone on the stairs or music playing...but soon dismisses the thought as being just nerves. As the time of the birth approaches, Katie asks Amy to be her birth partner in the event that Ian is unavailable and as her best friend, Amy is thrilled.

When Paula befriends Katie, she appears to be something of a saviour. Professing to be a doula, an expert trained in childbirth and infant care, she offers to help Katie in exchange for room and board. Katie is relieved to have her there, especially when Ian spends so much time at work, to help ease her fears as the birth approaches. But soon after at the baby shower Amy, a little drunk from the festivities, falls down the stairs and breaks her leg. Now laid up, Amy is unable to be Katie's birth partner should the need arise.

But then Ian is called away urgently on business in Thailand. A huge deal is going through for a string of hotels that could secure the business and set them up for life. With the due date so close, Katie is terrified he won't be there but Ian promises he will be only be gone a week and will be back by the time the girls arrive.

However, it soon becomes clear that Ian is unreachable when Katie tries calling and texting him. And then she goes into labour. Fearing it is too soon and that something is wrong, she tries Ian again. But to no avail. Thank goodness Paula is there to help support her, as it's clear she cannot depend on Ian, and she proves to be a tower of strength for Katie. Then as the twins come into this world, baby Alice's entry was smooth sailing while baby Frances' was traumatic. And by the end of it all, Katie is exhausted. Thankfully, she has Paula who been a Godsend. Or has she?

It soon becomes evident that Paula not only has taken over Katie's care but also that of her twins, moving into the master bedroom with the twins sleeping in their cots beside her while Katie has the spare room. Paula claims this is because Katie needs her rest after such a traumatic birth. I was angered on Katie's behalf at this because they were her babies - she had every right to be with them during their first days in the world. And what's with taking over the master bedroom while Katie was relegated to the damp spare? Alarm bells were ringing loud and clear for me but Katie was seemingly oblivious to them.

Then when Ian returns, Katie is so furious with him and refuses to believe his claims that he got the first flight back as soon as he got her messages, which apparently only just came in. How could that be? She had called him over and over and sent him message after message - but he has no other defence than that they never arrived till now.

It soon becomes clear that nothing is at it seems. But Katie is vulnerable and isolated with no one else available to help. She certainly couldn't rely on Ian. All she had was Paula. So with the upheaval and confusion that comes with being a new mum, as well as the distressing experience of such a traumatic birth, and now sleep deprivation puts Katie in the ideal position to be gas-lighted and manipulated. And so, Katie becomes more and more dependent on Paula.

As all the lies slowly start to unravel, Katie discovers that these very lies have put her and her babies in danger. So who can she trust? Ian? Paula? Her family? Herself? She didn't know anymore.

But one thing is for sure, she could not foresee how everything was going to end...Could you?

Told in dual timelines with frightening flashbacks to a scared unknown child, THE WOMAN UPSTAIRS is cleverly plotted, disturbing and twisted in more ways than one. And I loved every second of it! Although I could see what was happening, I was twisting myself in knots unable to warn Katie. I found myself wondering how she could trust someone so blindly without really knowing anything about them.

Honestly, I had most of the reveals figured out before I'd reached halfway but that didn't deter me. I love trying to piece everything together and then seeing if I'm right by the end...and in this case, I was pretty much bang on. Despite this, THE WOMAN UPSTAIRS was still a chilling atmospheric thriller so disturbing it will leave you wondering who you can trust.

THE WOMAN UPSTAIRS was my second read by Ruth Heald and just as brilliant and as chilling as her first. I can't wait to see what twisted plot she comes up with next!

It goes without saying that I highly recommend this book! Grab yourself a copy...you know you want to.
