DESCRIPTION:

Halfway across the globe, one of the world’s most mysterious men requires unconventional medical assistance. Desperate, and one of the few surgeons in the world skilled enough to take this job, Maggie enters his realm of unspeakable opulence and fulfils her end of the agreement.

But when the patient suddenly disappears while still under her care, Maggie must become a fugitive herself – or she will be the next one who is . . . Gone Before Goodbye.

MY THOUGHTS:

I love Harlan Coben and all his witty dry humour so I was disappointed with this one, in collaboration with Reese Witherspoon (whom I don't think much of as an actress and even less as an author). I wanted to like it but I could see no Harlan in the pages I read and I read a good portion of it before I ditched it as anything army or combat related, my eyes just glaze over and I am so not interested.

BUT...I do eagerly await the next Harlan thriller as he is such a wonderful writer and I love his books and TV adaptions.

I would like to thank #HarlanCoben, #ReeseWitherspoon, #PenguinBooks, #CenturyBooks and #Netgalley for an ARC of #GoneBeforeGoodbye in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: Under a Greek Sky by Francesca Catlow

Under a Greek Sky by Francesca Catlow
Genre: Contemporary fiction, Women's fiction
Read: 2nd October 2025

(did not finish)

DESCRIPTION:

Escape to sun-drenched Corfu, where family secrets and second chances bloom under endless Mediterranean skies. Under a Greek Sky is perfect for fans of Karen Swan, Kate Frost and Paige Toon.

When her happily-ever-after is shattered by a fiancé who disappears along with her life savings, Lorena desperately needs a new start. Then her seemingly perfect parents separate, and her mother decides to return to Corfu, the island of her birth, to renovate a family beach house. Lorena goes too, keen for a chance to shut the world out for a while.

The sun-soaked island with its stunning beaches and glittering sea is just the distraction Lorena needs. Not least handsome, mysterious Christos. But as long-held family secrets start to emerge, clouds gather over their Greek island paradise.

Why has Lorena’s mother always refused to return to Corfu until now? What secrets of his own is Christos keeping? When her father reappears on the scene, all hope of peace seems lost. Is Lorena about to watch another happily-ever-after implode, or can she learn from the past and open herself up to a new future?

Let Francesca Catlow sweep you away to enchanting Corfu—the perfect place to rediscover romance and embrace new beginnings.

MY THOUGHTS:

Things started off interestingly enough but then it just became something of a drone and drugery. I wanted to like this book. I really did. I thought it was going to be a fun romance and light reading under a blanket of sunshine by the azure waters of the Mediterranean, but....BUT...it was just full of family drama. Even the allure of whatever secret their mother was harbouring to keep them away from their Greek family wasn't enough to keep me turning the pages.

The characters weren't in the least bit likeable. I wasn't sure what the author was doing with Serena who, half the time was a petulant madam and the other half a weeping child, and Lorena did nothing but ooze self pity, her internal monologue one long constant moan. And mother Thalia? I guess I didn't stick around long enough to get a read on her.

I came here for the stunning Corfu scenery of blues and whites against the azure waters and brilliant sunshine. Add a little romance for some light reading but no. There was so much repetition of self pity. Yes, I get Jonah did the dirty and stole her life savings and her father upped and left with a woman half his age but no one wants to read about that constantly. Everything was just too monotonous.

I pictured the stunning Greek islands and wanted to immerse myself into this book so much and wanted to like it but I just couldn't. I couldn't even finish it. I hate leaving negative reviews because I know it's the author's hard work and I cannot even begin to appreciate how much work goes into writing a book so I do commend anyone who does. I just couldn't connect with the characters, I couldn't like them and I just didn't want to remain in their company.

I would like to thank #FrancescaCatlow, #Netgalley and #LakeUnionPublishing for an ARC of #UnderAGreekSky in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Open Marriage by Victoria Jenkins

The Open Marriage by Victoria Jenkins
Genre: Psychological thriller, Domestic thriller
Published: 6th July 2024

★ 1 star

DESCRIPTION:

It was supposed to save us. It destroyed us.

My husband, Marcus, and I used to be so in love. But now, after ten years together, we barely talk. I’ve seen so many of our friends’ marriages end in divorce, and I’m prepared to do whatever it takes to stop that from happening to us.

And then I meet Erin. She tells me all about her perfect marriage to Kieran, and I’m shocked when she reveals the secret to their marital bliss—they have an open marriage. My heart starts to race as I consider it for me and Marcus. Could we really do this?

When Marcus cautiously agrees, I know it can’t be with strangers, and so I call Erin. She tells me there is only one rule: complete honesty. But when I meet Kieran, it doesn’t take long for me to break that rule. Soon this isn’t an open marriage, but an affair.

As I start to fall for Kieran, Marcus becomes the attentive husband I’ve been craving, and I’m soon full of regret. This was all an awful mistake and I swear to end it. But my blood runs cold when Erin is reported missing. Who is this couple I’ve entangled our life with? And as the police knock on my door, it’s much more than just my marriage that is now at stake…

For fans of Lisa Jewell, Gone Girl and The Housemaid, this is a psychological thriller with a twist you’ll never see coming.

MY THOUGHTS:

It was supposed to save us...it destroyed us...

I had high hopes for this book having read and devoured Victoria Jenkins' previous thrillers but I just couldn't warm to this one. The maid character Louise is just so depressing. Her life is depressing. It's all so mundane and her monologue is depressing. If I wasn't depressed before I started, I certainly was with only a few chapters in!

The premise offered a promising tale of forbidden fruit. Why on earth thinking that sleeping with someone else would be the saving of their marriage? I found it somewhat distasteful and a mockery of what marriage is.

I won't bore you with the outline of the plot because it's not entirely interesting anyway. Louise feels invisible to her husband Marcus having only been married barely a decade. She begins to wonder whether he is having an affair and then when meeting Erin, she's introduced to the idea of an open marriage, begins one herself with Erin's hubby Keiran.

And why, when you have a perfectly good gym at home, would you then in the next scene take yourself off to the leisure centre (ie. gym) for yoga that you could do at home for free??

I expected more but with the reading slump I'm currently in, I found this one to be boring with irritating and depressing characters. I DNF. I may pick it up again at a later date and give it another go.

I would like to thank #VictoriaJenkins, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheOpenMarriage in exchange for an honest review.

DESCRIPTION:

“You’re invited to my farewell party. I’ve got something to tell you before I die…”

Heather wants to leave this world with a clear conscience.

One confession. One secret. Two scores to settle.

Heather accepted the fate of her terminal diagnosis long ago, but now the time is nearing, she arranges a huge farewell party for her nearest and dearest.

She wants to say goodbye to everyone personally, but there’s another reason she wants the people in her life to gather.

She knows who killed young Simon Eyre all those years ago, and she needs to tell. The boy deserves justice.

But she doesn’t realise that by freeing her own inner demons, she’s unleashing much worse secrets, and putting everyone at risk…

MY THOUGHTS:

One secret...one confession...and she knows who it is...

Honestly, I feel a bit GUILTY about writing this review. This was a really hard book for me to get into. I found the main character and her terminal diagnosis of cancer just a little too depressing. And she felt the need to create these gatherings of loved ones, past and present, to make the sad announcement. It just felt a little too contrived and, well, depressing. And if it wasn't that, it was boring.

The characters are all a little irritating and with every turn of the page I was dreading something happening to the dogs she tended to when boarding in the kennels she ran. An author can kill of as many people as they like...but hands off the dogs!

I can't tell you if anything happened to them because I ended up skipping to the final pages where even more people died and seven months later, Heather is still alive and kicking when her announcement at the beginning of the book made it sound as if she was at death's door, about to be taken at any moment.

I wish I could have connected with this book more as I do love Ruby Speechley but a reading slump makes it difficult to enjoy many books and this one was just one of those that didn't cut it with me this time round.

I would like to thank #RubySpeechley, #BoldwoodBooks and #RachelsRandomResources for an ARC of #Guilty in exchange for an honest review.

DESCRIPTION:

I have the life I’ve always dreamed of… but how long will it be until the past catches up with me?

I can’t believe how far my husband, Hayden, and I have come. I never expected that one day I’d be sipping a steaming coffee over our marble countertop or finishing off a humid summer day with a dip in our sparkling pool. But even though we’re living in paradise, I’ve never felt so distant from my husband. I’m certain he’s hiding something from me. Before, I would have confided in my friends and family but in this new life of ours, I’m terrified to trust anyone…

Now, with Hayden out again, my evening is quiet. From our floor-to-ceiling windows, I watch the pool water ripple under the raindrops. But I swear I see movement beyond the garden hedges. I try to shake my fears away, I must be imagining things. That’s what Hayden would say.

But then I find the hand-delivered note and my heart pounds in my chest as I scan the neat words.

You don’t deserve this life.

My blood runs cold. I thought I’d kept all my secrets well hidden, but now as I look out to the still night, I realise it’s only a matter of time until my past catches up with me – a past my husband still has no idea about. I know what I have to do to protect my perfect new life, but those around me have no idea how far I’m willing to go to keep it…

Utterly gripping and full of jaw-dropping twists, fans of Freida McFadden, Lisa Jewell and Daniel Hurst will be completely hooked by The Wife’s Mistake!

MY THOUGHTS:

Even inside your dream house you can't hide from your past...

This book might be about the wife's mistake - of which there are many, she made so many stupid and dumb decisions throughout - but unfortunately in this case this one is my mistake. Try as I might I just couldn't get into the story which bordered on ridiculous, in my opinion. I tried to give Natalie the benefit of one too many doubts but I just felt like banging my head against a brick wall. And I've so enjoyed some of the author's other thrillers too! But this one just wasn't for me.

For a start, I just didn't know what was going on with the first chapter. Some dinner party where an engagement and promotion is announced but what was the point of it? And then we rewound to Natalie's first bad decision which lead to plenty more that swiftly followed. OK, so she's in a job where she is under appreciated by a dragon boss and spends most of her days either bantering with the customers or daydreaming about her own coffee shop she dreams of opening.

So when she absently buys a lottery ticket she never thought in a million years - 12.5 million - that she would ever win! But she did. And soon she began dreaming of how she would spend those millions. Ditch her dead end job, buy premises to open her own cafe, step off the rental treadmill and buy a home for her and hubby Hayden.

And then she discovers a text on his phone. From someone called Vivienne. Seemingly intimate messages. Is Hayden having an affair? So what does Natalie do? Confront Hayden, like any normal wife? No. She stalks him. First she takes a glimpse of Vivienne to grasp her competition, who is a Megan Fox lookalike (whom Hayden has a secret crush on). Then she dresses herself up in dowdy women's wear, wig and glasses and follows Hayden up to Manchester for a business conference. What on earth does she hope to achieve? I'm not sure because she lost me there and I binned the rest of the book. It was ridiculous and made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I really hate leaving negative reviews because I know this is an author's hard work but at the end of the day we can't like every book we read. It's a shame because I have read and enjoyed Lorna's thrillers before but this one just wasn't for me.

I would like to thank #LornaDounaeva, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheWifesMistake in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: Anatomy of a Killer by Romy Hausmann

Anatomy of a Killer by Romy Hausmann
Genre: Psychological thriller, German
Read: 16th August 2023
Published: 3rd August 2023

★ 1 star

DESCRIPTION:

They say he's a murderer. But how could he be?

Berlin, 2017: several young girls have been disappearing for the past fourteen years. Red ribbons show the police the way to their bodies, but there's no trace of the killer.

One evening, internationally renowned philosophy professor and anthropologist Walter Lesniak is arrested on the suspicion of the murders in the presence of his daughter, Ann.

'Professor Death' becomes the headline of the tabloid press and Lesniak himself refuses to cooperate with the police. Ann is certain this is all some kind of mistake. And she will prove it. Yet, with the arrest of her father, she begins a journey into the unknown . . .

MY THOUGHTS:

They call him a murderer...but how could he be...?

Oh my. I was so disappointed with this book sadly. I read and totally loved "Dear Child" so I was thrilled to see this one come up for request. It sounded intriguing. But...

Ann's father is in prison awaiting trial for the murders of several girls over a fourteen year period. Despite the evidence against him, Ann refuses to accept her father's guilt and so embarks on a journey to prove his innocence.

I didn't get that far.

Flipping burgers on Christmas Eve then going home with a customer/friend (still can't work out what he was meant to be) where she got drunk and confessed to the allegations against daddy dearest and her quest to see him free. I honestly couldn't get much past that. I really struggled with the format and the whole story just didn't gel with me. Ann was unlikeable and I found it hard to sympathise much with her. I found her internal dialogue and flashbacks somewhat confusing. But then that could be down to being lost in translation.

I must congratulate the translator as I can't even begin to imagine the task of translating an entire book page by page, line by line, word for word and maintain the integrity of the original. The inclusion of Ann's diary entries that were written phonetically, I think the translator did an astounding job.

At the end of the day, we can't like every book we read. That's never going to happen. You win some, you lose some. I may give this one another go further down the track but as it stands right now I just couldn't get into it. A shame really because "Dear Child" was the bomb. Totally brilliant. But then it was always going to be tough beating that one.

I would like to thank #RomyHausmann, #Netgalley and #QuercusBooks for an ARC of #AnatomyOfAKiller in exchange for an honest review.

Previously published as Where the Wild Thyme Blows by Jeannie Johnson**

MY THOUGHTS:

I love this author and I was eager to dive into this new saga tale from her pen. But from the first page my blood was boiling and I found myself really struggling with this book. Which is a shame as I have read plenty and have loved many by Lizzie Lane. I love her Tobacco Girls series as well as her newer Coronation Close series. But this one just felt different and I simply couldn't get past Beth's father and his ignorant treatment of her. Having just lost a dear friend maybe I was in the wrong frame of mind, I don't know. But I had to pass on this one as it was for a blog tour and I simply couldn't read it.

I would like to thank #LizzieLane, #Netgalley, #BoldwoodBooks and #RachelsRandomResources for an ARC of #TroubleForTheBoatGirl in exchange for an honest review.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Lizzie Lane is a born and bred Bristolian who now lives in West Wiltshire with her partner, a wonderful garden and a lately acquired allotment. In the past she has bred dogs, kept horses, painted and made models from clay. (Nightly visit from the badger has smashed one).

Working jobs she's hated purely to keep a roof over her family’s head and a meal on the table, she then discovered writing. Encouraged by an American writer friend and when a time came there were no jobs and no other option, she took the plunge. She is now the author of over 50 books, a number of which have been bestsellers. As a Bristolian, many of her family worked in the cigarette and cigar factories, inspiring her new saga series The Tobacco Girls.

Up until six years ago her home (and that of her late husband) was a 46ft sailing yacht named Sarabande Serene, sailing into the Mediterranean. So besides being a successful author Lizzie can read navigation charts and react swiftly in a storm.

Lizzie is now landlocked in a town close to the city of Bath.

REVIEW: The Summer Holiday by S.E. Lynes

The Summer Holiday by S.E. Lynes
Genre: Psychological thriller
Read: 8th May 2023
Published: 9th May 2023

★ 1 star

DESCRIPTION:

One loving couple. One surprise guest. One week to destroy everything…

When the doorbell rings, I take one last look round the villa. The nuts and olives are in bowls; the white wine is chilling in the fridge; everything is ready for my old college friend, the guest I’m dying to impress.

When I open the door, Coco steps from the dusty street into the cool tiled hall, as effortlessly beautiful as ever. But then her face freezes in horror, her mouth falling open. I turn to see my husband Jeff behind me, his eyes wide, his cheeks pale.

After a moment, they both smile, pretending nothing happened at all. But I know what I saw.

This holiday was meant to rescue my marriage, not ruin it.

But the connection between my friend and my husband isn’t what I thought.

All three of us have something to lose, and something to fight for.

And when the truth comes out, not all of us will survive…

From the no.1 bestselling author S.E. Lynes comes a brilliantly gripping thriller that will have you racing through the pages and gasping out loud at the twists. Fans of Paula Hawkins, Lisa Jewell and Gillian Flynn will love The Summer Holiday.

MY THOUGHTS:

The people closest to you know exactly what you're trying to hide.

The hostess: Kate wants this holiday to be different. It's the first time in years it's just been her and her husband. A chance to walk along the beach, eat ice cream together in the bright Spanish sun, remind each other of why they fell in love. And what better way to start than inviting their glamorous university acquaintance Coco for a drink at their clifftop villa, with it's pristine pool.

The host: Jeff doesn't know why Kate's making such a big deal about their surprise visitor. But if it makes her happy, that's fine. He wants her to be happy. He'll never tell her what he did to ensure it....

The guest: when Coco steps from the dusty street into the cool tiled hall, she has an idea what she's about to see. As Jeff comes down the stairs, he freezes in horror.

One innocent invitation could cost everything.

So the best thing about this book was the location. It's summer, there's sun, a beach and a pool. Nothing like the cooling and relaxing sensation of water immersion. Everything else was blah.

I really don't know where to start with this review. I have read several Susie Lynes' thrillers and admittedly she IS a bit of a hit or miss author for me. But some have been so good - I loved "The Baby Shower""Can You See Her?" and "Her Sister's Secret" - while others are either average or a bit of a snorefest. My biggest issue with her books unfortunately is the slow pace she so often begins with. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This time I spent the first 25% wanting to throttle Kate who at 53 years old should be long past the idolisation of someone who was a popular girl at university. She spent most of the time either gawking at her or trying to emulate everything about her when she wasn't stalking her. I wanted to leave her to her flights of fancy and go dive into the infinity pool I could just see myself in or dip my toes in the sandy surf of the beach. I just love water!

Basically, Kate and Jeff were love's young dream from their university days and Coco Moss was the popular girl who broke the rules and pushed the boundaries and did her own thing. She'd dye her hair pink and when others followed, she's swap to electric blue and then when they did the same, she'd go orange or bald or whatever. Coco Moss didn't care what others thought of her. And now three decades later, Kate has seen the still stunning Coco lounging beachside now with a couple of teenage children in tow. Kate abandons all other plans she and Jeff may have had and thus spends the afternoon gazing at her, studying her and her clothes then pops into town to purchase the very same outfit so she didn't look like the frump she actually was. She was so stoked at running to Coco and then inviting her to drinks at their villa, she couldn't see beyond that.

So when Coco walks into their villa the following evening she stops dead, a look of abject horror on her face. Kate turns and follows her gaze...where she sees Jeff descending the stairs, a similar expression on his face also. What's going on here that she's not getting?

But try as she might, Kate cannot get Jeff to reveal the truth about his and Coco's mirrored reactions of shock and horror at seeing the other after all these years. So what secrets are they hiding?

Quite honestly, by that stage I didn't much care. All they were doing was getting blindingly drunk and reminiscing about university days with no truth coming to light. And honestly, all three of them either made my skin crawl or I just loathed. No one was likeable and I didn't care what happened to them. I did, however, skip to the final three or four chapters to see how it ended and if any big reveal was to come. Yeah, it kind of did...but it didn't rock my world or make any huge difference. So therefore I don't feel as if I missed out on anything.

Overall, THE SUMMER HOLIDAY just didn't do it for me and I really hate leaving negative reviews. But unfortunately we can't like every book we read.

I would like to thank #SELynes#Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheSummerHoliday in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: After the Rain by Susan E. Jones

After the Rain by Susan E Jones
Genre: Historical fiction
Read: 9th April 2023
Published: 18th January 2023

★ 1 star

DESCRIPTION:

It is the late summer of 1910 and Bessie Hardwicke, thirty-nine years old and single, has just started work as a lady’s companion to widowed Fanny Grist in London. The change is momentous for Bessie and she constantly questions whether the move was a big mistake. Life in London is so different from what she’s been used to and she desperately misses her dear nephew Walter, whom she looks upon as a son.

There is no denying that she is badly in need of a change. Even after twenty years, she is still grieving the loss of her fiancé Arthur and beloved sister Ethel. But she is not alone in her grief. Those she comes into contact with in London are no less afflicted by the loss of loved ones than she is. And through her compassion and selflessness, Bessie bestows on others the priceless gift of irrepressible hope.

MY THOUGHTS:

I thought I would enjoy this book as I do so love the era in which it is set. However, I found Bessie's monologuing both droning and depressing. Having moved from her home in the West Country, Bessie has taken up the position of lady's companion to a curmudgeonly Edwardian widow Mrs Fanny Grist. Why anyone would be this woman's lady's companion is anyone's guess! She's horrid. Well, she is in my opinion anyway.

Bessie takes everything Fanny dishes out to her on the chin, knowing that if she were to retaliate she may be in danger of losing her job and therefore her room and board (and thus home) in a big strange city. Fanny seems to do and say everything she can to get on Bessie's nerves and I'm sure she does it purposely to get a rise...I think she enjoys a little tête-à-tête battle. But Bessie just makes her responses through clenched teeth, if need be.

Bessie's life hasn't been easy. Her father saw her academic talents and wanted her to be a teacher but her mother said how would she find a husband as a teacher? Apparently female teachers remained unmarried. But it was not to be as when her father died her mother whipped her out of school and put her to work at Farringdon House (where she'd worked before she married many years ago) - all hopes of being a teacher dashed. She remained there until threat of domestic staff being cut and sought a position elsewhere sourced by her best friend Patty who now lived in London. And thus she became a lady's companion to old biddy Fanny. She was to remain at Farringdon until she married, and married she was to be to her beloved fiance Arthur...until he sadly died. And so here in London she is.

Despite the sorrows that have befallen her, Bessie has remained kind-hearted but she is desperately lonely. She longs to make friends but the cook and housekeeper at Mrs Grist's aren't welcoming so she remains alone. She does have her friend Patty whom she sees when she can.

I didn't love the narrative style of this book. It didn't warm me to the character at all, although I preferred her just slightly to the horrid Fanny. Why couldn't she just be kind? I wanted to like this book but I just couldn't. The narrative style was too depressing and felt like an endless monologue cataloguing Bessie's sorrows. It wasn't the easy style that I have come to love of this era.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Susan E Jones was born in Gloucestershire and now lives in Cornwall, where she divides her time between writing, reading and walking. She has lived on three continents and travelled extensively, yet still finds visiting foreign lands and exploring new cultures and customs invigorating.

Susan E Jones grew up in Stroud in Gloucestershire but was always keen to travel and embrace new experiences. For many years she lived and worked abroad – in Brussels, Rome, Abidjan and Washington DC – working mostly with international organisations in various roles ranging from editing to budget preparation.

When she finally decided it was time for me to return to the UK, Susan chose Penzance in Cornwall as her home, devoting most of her free time to writing - which had long been her ambition. Long daily walks along the South West Coastal Path give her both a sense of wellbeing and an opportunity to think about ideas for my next novel.

After the Rain is the first purely fictional novel she has written. It was inspired by the contents of her great-great aunt’s postcard album, which somehow ended up in her possession. Many of the postcards are from her nephew, capturing her imagination and giving her a glimpse into life in the early 1900s.

REVIEW: The Assistant by Amanda Reynolds

The Assistant by Amanda Reynolds
Genre: Psychological thriller, Did not finish
Read: 4th April 2023
Published: 5th April 2023

DESCRIPTION:

I know many things about Larissa.

I know what she eats, which must-have brands she applies to her face, and the price of each carefully selected ‘piece’ in her multi-million-pound home in Belgravia.

Because Ris, as she is known to her many followers, likes to share.

And now I’m here, in her home, watching her every move.

Entrusted with her secrets and running her diary from the bijou basement flat, I’m on hand to fulfil Ris’ every need. Her right-hand woman. But what she doesn’t know is why I’m really here.

I’ve put a lot on the line to get this job, and now my plan can begin.

I’ve waited long enough.

MY THOUGHTS:

She's in your house...she knows your secrets...

Gail is on a mission...to take down Larissa. Why? I'm not sure I could really work that out. But even so, she wants her revenge on Larissa so much that she becomes her personal executive assistant. And as her assistant, she knows all her habits and her secrets.

Larissa, a social media influencer, married a much older and very wealthy man Miles Fox, who incidentally gained the nickname "Air Miles" due to his love for hostesses and waitresses and the like. Together they bought an eighteen room five story mansion house at number 56 Lexington Gardens, an exclusive address on millionaire's row in London's affluent Belgravia.

Gail knows everything about Larissa. She knows what she eats, what cosmetics and perfumes she uses, the price of each carefully selected piece in her multi-million pound home. She even knows the value of each stem of flower freshly adorning the rooms of that home that Larissa discards weekly for a fresh bunch.

Being a social media influencer, Larissa likes to share. Everything.

And now Gail is in her home, as her personal executive assistant, watching her every move.

Sounds exciting, doesn't it? Well, that's about all it sounds because believe me it isn't. Told through a series of interviews with Gail (mostly), emails and diary entries, THE ASSISTANT is a slow burning psychological thriller...a very slow burn. It's a tale of revenge that was a so glacial I began to wonder if anything was going to happen. Because all that was happening was a disgruntled ex-employee mouthing off to a a journalist about anything and everything, complaining about her lot. It was clear Gail hated Larissa. Honestly, I didn't care. I skipped to the end and you know what? I still didn't care. The story went absolutely nowhere.

I hate DNFing a book and leaving a negative review. But I was bored and Gail irritated me no end with her endless waffling. I am really sorry but I did try. I wanted to like this book...but I just couldn't.
