The perfect honeymoon...until her husband disappeared...

Stella and Austin are newlyweds just arrived in Venice for the picture perfect honeymoon. After a sumptuous dinner, a little dessert and some rambunctious love-making, Stella awakes to find Austin dressing in the dark. Upon enquiring he tells her the restaurant phoned - he left his credit card there. And so he is just popping out to collect it and a few other things from a nearby supermarket. He kisses her goodbye and leaves their suite...and he never returns.

Frantic with worry, Stella alerts the hotel reception and retraces her steps back to the restaurant to enquire as to whether Austin made it there or not. The fact he had does little to ease her mind because where has he gone from there? And why did he not return?

As hours turn into days, Stella must inform her in-laws, Rob and Vicki, who jump on the first available flight out there to join her in her search for Austin, as the police continue their enquiries also. 

But the longer Austin remains missing, the more Stella begins to question just how well she really knew the man she married. And has she just made a big mistake in doing so?

Told in the NOW and THEN present-and-past-format, this tale is a slow burn for Shalini (I'm used to her fast paced pageturners) and as the story unfolds, we begin to see that all is not as it seems. 

While this was not one of her best, it was still a fairly quick read and I felt the final chapters and Epilogue were its saving grace as Shalini has always been the queen of the last minute twist...and she did not disappoint! She delivered not one but TWO shocking revelations that not even I saw coming. And it was these in the final few chapters and Epilogue that saved what was something of a pedestrian read. I know what Shalini is capable of and I can't wait to see what she delivers us next!

10 Things My Readers Might Not Know About Me

My dreams (nightmares) nearly always involve the characters and settings that I’m currently writing about. For example, last night I dreamt that I’d abducted a baby and tried to hide him in my husband’s car, but I couldn’t get the doors to lock. It was awful! Maybe I’d have a better night’s sleep if I wrote rom coms.

I love all fruit except bananas. The smell, texture, taste – ugh. No. Just no. Keep that evil fruit away from me.

I write for a living, and so does my husband, but neither of our children are particularly avid readers. My eldest is dyslexic and has never enjoyed reading or writing. My youngest quite enjoys it, but has to be pretty much forced into trying a new book. How did this happen? I have no idea. We always read to them when they were younger. We have a houseful of all kinds of books. Ah, well, I’ll keep trying.

When I was nineteen, I hitchhiked at night in Israel and ended up in the middle of nowhere convinced I was going to die. Turns out I only needed to walk another two minutes to find myself back at the kibbutz where I was staying. I’ve never hitchhiked since.

My writing companion is a little Poodle/Lhasa Apso/Terrier cross called Jess who sits at my feet while I type. Sometimes she sneaks up onto the sofa and rests her chin on my keyboard. I’m not sure I could write without her nearby.

When we were in our twenties, my husband and I set up VW car shows. Our events were all jinxed. Over the course of six shows we had four instances of major theft, a forest fire, the worst storm on record, someone set up illegal rave, an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, and an actual bomb scare with police cordoning off the area and evacuating everyone. Plus, we only made a profit during our first show, the other times we just about broke even. Not a huge success.

Nearly all my novels are set in and around the area of Dorset where I live. I moved here when I was eighteen, but I feel like this is my true home. I love it – the towns, beaches and countryside are beautiful.

Good coffee and chocolate are my weaknesses.

I used to be a singer songwriter and once sang on stage at The Brixton Academy in front of four thousand people. I don’t know how I did it. I’m such an introvert these days.

I feel very lucky to write for a living. Every day, I’m truly thankful and appreciate that I’ve finally discovered what it is I love to do – it only took me forty years to work it out! It isn’t always easy and some days I need a kick up the backside to stop procrastinating and get working. Other days are overwhelming and I do get anxious about what my readers will think of each book. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. I only hope people will continue to enjoy my books and allow me to keep doing what I love.

MY THOUGHTS:

Revenge is a dish best serve cold...

Firstly, I would recommend reading book one first - "The Woman at my Wedding" - as it really sets the backstory for this one, though each one is a standalone in its own right. It takes place seven years after the first one and is just as fast paced and twisted.

We reunite with Hannah and Nathan as they plan their upcoming wedding, with a real sense of deja vu. The difference being Lennie who has a huge imagination and often loses herself to her own little world and land of make believe. She even has a voice as she provides her own narrative in her own chapters as we see the world through Lennie's eyes. I must admit, her perspective sometimes seems a little advanced for a 6 year old but then it's been a long time since I was that age so it is hard to remember.

Lennie introduces us to her own imaginary friend who she calls Whisper and together they embark on many magical adventures together. Beginning off as imaginary, Whisper soon becomes real visible only to Lennie and if you have read book one you will have a pretty good idea who Whisper really is! She knows everything about Lennie and is the only friend the little girl feels she can trust as things begin to erupt at home. 

But before long, Hannah and Nathan begin to ponder the wisdom of allowing this imaginary friend when things begin to go awry. Of course it doesn't help that Nathan has begun to grow distant from both Hannah and Lennie, snapping at them both for the slightest thing and bringing fear to their door. Soon the wedding they have waited so long for seems far beyond their reach as Hannah ponders whether marrying Nathan is really in the best interests of her daughter. While Lennie spends most of her time escaping to her treehouse into the comforting arms of her guardian angel Whisper.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel book with the different aspect as told by Lennie, though her chapters were clearly written by an adult. Some of her phrases and words were just too advanced for a 6 year old I felt. Especially since it was apparent throughout that she couldn't pronounce "funeral". I had trouble pronouncing her version of it though...hahaha.

Not a lot of criticism bar the fact that Nathan's abusive behaviour came out of nowhere when he showed no signs of it in the first book. It's like he was a completely different character for the most part. Granted, he has just lost his father and is struggling with the grief he feels he shouldn't have given the place his father had in his life. But while he was the epitome of love and understanding in the first book, this one he became someone different.

Then there was Elena's psychiatrist husband. Elena suggests Hannah speak to him to help deal with her stress, then Hannah encourages Nathan to seek him also...then by the end they have Lennie having therapy with him! Don't get me wrong, Lennie was in dire need of therapy after everything, but a psychiatrist cannot treat any member of a patient's family (or anyone with a close relationship) - past or present - let alone the entire family! It is a clear conflict of interest. Added to that, Lennie will have needed a therapist (not a psychiatrist) with specific training in treating children.

My last criticism is the whole "missing bridesmaid" part. While it may be the title of the book, it is very misleading because it takes up only a one hundredth percent of the story. And it came out of nowhere! The reasoning behind her "abduction" (which I term rather loosely) is just absurd. And then in a matter of a few paragraphs, all is forgiven and its water under the bridge. I'm sorry...but that part of the story was completely redundant and made absolutely no sense whatsoever. 

Take that last part out and it would be a five star read because it was everything I love in a thriller - fast paced, twisted, devious and entertaining.

Others have mentioned it being set up for a third book. I'm not sure. I think just leave it where it is. Anything else would just be white noise I think. It's perfect (aside from that last point) as it is.

He's the man I love...she wants him back...

It's been awhile since I've read an LG Davis thriller and once again she does not disappoint. Fast becoming one of my favourite authors, Liz throws red herrings and misdirection our way to throw us off the path. And yet while there are plenty of smoke and mirrors, I honed in on who I thought was "the woman" from the very start. Considering I've been in a reading slump for a couple of months, this was like a breath of fresh air and a welcome change to the monotony of others I've found of late.

Fans of Daniel Hurst, Shalini Boland, KL Slater and Freida McFadden will delight in this domestic tale of bliss to woe with plenty of twists, lies, secrets and deception to keep readers entertained.

Brynn is approaching forty and has finally met the man of her dreams, thirty nine year old attorney Nathan. The pair met, fell in love and Nathan bought Brynn a stunning beachside house where she now lives in the weeks leading up to their wedding. Meanwhile, Nathan is away working on a trial that could make him an even bigger household name. That of Amanda Lane, a woman accused of murdering all three of her wealthy husbands. 

While he works right up to the wedding, Brynn remains at home organising their wedding...but someone doesn't want their nuptials to go ahead. Brynn begins receiving strange messages in the form of a wedding cake topper in which the bride's face is smashed. Her wedding veil goes missing and is later found buried on the beach. Then her dream wedding venue is cancelled. The photographer backs out. Her custom made shoes from Italy are ruined with red paint. Who would do such a thing? Who hates her that much to ruin her wedding?

And then a face from Brynn's past arrives on the doorstep, dragging her fully packed suitcase behind her insisting she's there to help with the wedding preparations. But why is she really here?

When the wedding day finally arrives, you won't see what's coming and the author deftly derives a devious plot that's so cunning and deceptive that will leave your head spinning.

As is Liz Davis' style, the pace moves from steady to fast to frantic as the climax nears, with that final twist to spin everything of its axis. I was turning the pages at the speed of light to see what happened next. As with most of her books, I thoroughly enjoyed this one and can't wait to dive into the second book "The Missing Bridesmaid" which can only be read after this one as the plot to this one ends of something of a cliffhanger that can only be resolved in the next.

MY THOUGHTS:

It was supposed to save us...it destroyed us...

I had high hopes for this book having read and devoured Victoria Jenkins' previous thrillers but I just couldn't warm to this one. The maid character Louise is just so depressing. Her life is depressing. It's all so mundane and her monologue is depressing. If I wasn't depressed before I started, I certainly was with only a few chapters in! 

The premise offered a promising tale of forbidden fruit. Why on earth thinking that sleeping with someone else would be the saving of their marriage? I found it somewhat distasteful and a mockery of what marriage is.

I won't bore you with the outline of the plot because it's not entirely interesting anyway. Louise feels invisible to her husband Marcus having only been married barely a decade. She begins to wonder whether he is having an affair and then when meeting Erin, she's introduced to the idea of an open marriage, begins one herself with Erin's hubby Keiran.

And why, when you have a perfectly good gym at home, would you then in the next scene take yourself off to the leisure centre (ie. gym) for yoga that you could do at home for free??

I expected more but with the reading slump I'm currently in, I found this one to be boring with irritating and depressing characters. I DNF. I may pick it up again at a later date and give it another go.

We are back with housemaid Millie Calloway and her hunky Italian gardener Enzo, now more than a decade after the events that took place in the first two books "The Housemaid" and "The Housemaid's Secret". 

Millie and Enzo have been married for twelve years with 11 year old daughter Ada and 9 year old son Nico. After struggling to provide living in their cramped two bedroom shoebox in the Bronx, the couple have splurged on a mortgage and purchased a sprawling house on Long Island where they believe it the perfect place to raise their family.

From the first moment Millie sees her bubbly neighbour Suzette, she practically hates her on sight. The woman is an overt flirt, openly throwing herself at Enzo in front of both her husband Jonathon and Millie's eyes. Whilst Jonathon doesn't appeared to be perturbed by the spectacle, Millie is. And Enzo doesn't even seem to notice the woman's more than obvious innuendoes. But if they want to feel welcomed in the neighbourhood then Millie must bite her tongue. After all, Suzette apparently has some influential contacts to help Enzo in building his landscaping business.

There is one other house in their quiet little cul-de-sac and that belongs to single mother Janice and her young son Spencer, who is the same age as Nico. The boys hit it off as fast friends but the mothers do not. Janice is over protective bordering on weird. She questions Millie about Nico's vaccination status and will only permit the boys' playdate once this is proved via a certificate. She questions Millie about nits as well as what exactly her husband is doing at Suzette's so much. The woman is busybody if not strange. After all, she stands at the bus stop with Spencer, a leash attached to him! 

Soon Millie begins to question the insight into the move. What on the surface appeared to be a safe place to raise their children threatens to implode their family. And then there's the murder...

I totally LOVED the first two books in this fantastic series and was eagerly awaiting this third installment after it was announced last year. However, for me, I found this one to be something of a disappointment...particularly when you compare it to the first two. On its own it could well suffice but this is the housemaid...and I guess I expected a little more. I know that Freida is capabale of brilliance in her thrillers and the final twist to her plots. But this one was just meh for me. Especially considering I was totally puzzled by the motive behind the crime, which incidentally is just an aside. I mean, toys? It made no sense. And there was no real reasoning behind Janice and her leashing Spencer. So many loose threads left at the end I was left a little confused by it all. Read it and see if you can figure it out.

Not a bad read, but it doesn't compare to the two that preceded this one.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Daniel Hurst was born in the northwest of England, a part of the world famous for its comedians, pasties and terrible weather.

He has been employed in several glamorous roles in his lifetime, including bartending, shelf stacking and procurement administration, all while based in some of the most exotic places on the planet, like Bolton, Preston and South London.

Daniel writes psychological thrillers and loves to tell tales about unusual things happening to normal people. He has written all his life, making the progression from handing scribbled stories to his parents as a boy to writing full length novels in his thirties.
