DESCRIPTION:

When your whole life becomes one big lie…
The night my mum disappeared, after a panicked 3am phone, I knew something was wrong.

The police tried to reassure me. There had to be a logical explanation they said – perhaps she’s taking a break after the tragic death of my father.

But I know my mum.

Or do I?

She would never leave without telling me.

Or would she?

The harder I look, the more I discover deep, dark family secrets I was not privy too.

Worrying secrets I was ever meant to know.

Which means my parents have lied to me my whole life.

But why?

Who can I turn too? Trust?

Who is friend and who is foe?

Were they scared of something in their past?

Or were they trying to protect me?

Has mum gone of her own free will?

Or has someone taken her?

Diane Saxon’s compelling new thriller will have you questioning who you can trust to keep your family safe.

MY THOUGHTS:

Who do you believe...and who do you trust...?

It's 3.25am when Lorraine receives a phone call from her frantic mum. The words she utters at first she thinks the result of a few drinks to drown her depression after the tragic loss off her dad, Henry. But long after she's hung up, those words continue to circle her mind until she has worked herself up into a worry. But she can't just drop everything to go see if her mum's alright as there is no one to look after the children. So she will have to wait till morning. But as soon as she's dropped Sophia off, she'll be round at her mum's to check that she's ok...that all is well.

Only when she gets there five hours later, there is no sign of her mum. The house is in silence, the curtains still drawn, the bed has not been slept in. Her mother's handbag complete with her purse and her keys are still beside the lounge. Only her phone is missing. As is her mum. And as a cold dread fills her, Lorraine recalls those chilling words her mum uttered in the wee hours in a frightened whisper...

"Your dad was first. Now it's me. I'm so scared, but mostly for you and the children. Because once I'm gone, you'll be next."

After searching her mother's house, Lorraine goes to the police station to report her as missing. Only she's and adult and has only been gone for a few hours. She could be anywhere and be home at any moment. But Lorraine tries to impress on the man at the desk the importance of the situation. Her mother has no one. She wouldn't just disappear without telling her. Nor did she have anywhere to go. All Sandra had was Lorraine and the children. But there was nothing they could do unless her mother was deemed vulnerable. Was she vulnerable? She wasn't sure. The kindly man assured her that her mother will probably be back in no time and wonder what all the fuss was about, but if not, to return after seventy two hours...or was it forty eight hours? Lorraine can't remember. All she knows is that her mum is missing and some garbled message in the middle of the night that barely made any sense.

A return to her mum's house has her searching for answers and it comes in the form of her mum's kindly neighbour Mrs Tindall. Lorraine didn't really have time to stop and chat but Mrs Tindall was a lonely old woman and it wouldn't hurt. But little did she know that Mrs Tindall held the key to a Pandora's box and, while not a wealth of information, it was a start. She had in her possession letters written to her father over the years which he had hidden on their property, away from her mother who would go spare if got wind of it. The letters were from her father's son, Trevor. Which means he was Lorraine's half brother. A half brother she knew nothing about. Thanking Mrs Tindall, she took the letters home and poured over their contents, her eyes brimming with tears at the pleading tone. This poor boy. All he had been through. Why did her parents not give him a home?

It seems that's not all they didn't tell her as her quest for answers sends her on a three hour round trip to Liverpool and an aunt she barely remembers from her childhood, her dad's younger sister. Aunt Caroline fills in the blanks that have evaded Lorraine for thirty years...a whole life she knew nothing about.

But the question remains, where is her mother? And how much of the past has to do with her disappearance?

THE STEPSON is an entertaining, though at times heartbreaking, domestic suspense that had me turning the pages to find out what happened to Sandra. The story cleverly unfolds in the past and present narratives giving the reader a clear picture of events and how each of the threads entwined. There were so many secrets and plenty of deception which were slowly stripped away to reveal the truth. And what an ugly truth it was.

Quite honestly, I didn't like Sandra. Yes, she probably suffered from post natal psychosis as she was clearly delusional and irrational but that continued throughout the years and she was utterly horrible to poor old hen-pecked Henry. Whether she had good cause or not to make such demands, they were not her decisions to make and those she made were amidst the irrational fog of delusion. As for Trevor, I actually felt sorry for him. I wanted him to make it good, to turn his life around and never look back. No child should have had to endure what he had to. Nor should any child be used as a pawn in their parent's disputes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story far more than the author's previous one "My Little Brother" and so glad I requested it. It was addictive, compelling and thoroughly entertaining. A good solid read.

I would like to thank #DianeSaxon, #Netgalley and #BoldwoodBooks for an ARC of #TheStepson in exchange for an honest review.

The Homemaker by Shari J. Ryan

DESCRIPTION:

I pull back the blanket to take another peek at my beautiful baby boy. My heart flatlines. He isn’t there. “Where is he?” I cry, my whole body trembling. But my husband just shakes his head. “Darling… we don’t have a baby.”

What is he talking about? Stumbling to my feet, I look frantically at the highchair, the playmat in the corner, the sofa. I need to find my little boy.

Limbs like ice, I rush toward the stairs, shouting my son’s name. But my husband grabs my arms and gently reminds me there is no baby here.

I can’t listen. I don’t understand how our child isn’t in our home. I don’t know who could have taken him. I just know I have to find him.

Climbing the stairs two at a time, my hand is already stretching toward the nursery door, but my husband overtakes, blocking my way.

He forces me to face him. I think I can hear the baby mobile over the crib. I can practically smell the newborn smell. But my husband sighs and shakes his head.

He says it again, firmly this time, as a tear tracks down my cheek: “We don’t have a baby.”

I blink rapidly, my breathing ragged. I think he expects me to agree. But I know that my son is real. I can feel his weight in my arms. And I will stop at nothing to get him back…

An absolutely gripping psychological thriller that will have your heart racing. Prepare yourself for jaw-dropping, mind-blowing twists! Perfect for fans of addictive page-turners like The Housemaid, The Family Across the Street and The Family Upstairs.

MY THOUGHTS:

Devoted wife..loving mother...trusted neighbour...liar...

My first read by Shari Ryan and wow...I'm impressed. Her name is synonymous with historical fiction centring on the Holocaust so when I saw she had a psychological thriller, one that whetted my appetite, I just knew I had to read it. And I was not disappointed.

What begins as an emotionally-charged tale of Jenna, a woman suffering from post natal psychosis after the birth of her son, readers are thrown headlong into a tumultuous situation and a neighbourhood where the neighbours know a little bit more than maybe they should. Jenna's heartbreak was raw and no one felt it more keenly than she. But how did she end up here? And why?

Jenna and Oliver have moved into the house of their dreams on Sapphire Drive after a private exchange with the previous owner rushed through the sale. They cannot believe their luck. A house in the much sought after neighbourhood they could only dream of living in...up till now. But their house has come with a history they know nothing of. And then Jenna finds a bouquet of flowers in the fridge with a sympathy card attached that stops her in her tracks. How could she find out more about the previous owners without seeming too obvious?

Not long after the new residents moves in, neighbours Ginger and Peyton are quick to introduce themselves and seemingly vy for Jenna's attention. Ginger is an empty nester after the last of her four boys has moved out of home while Peyton is thrilled that someone closer to her age has moved into the street. Jenna and Peyton hit it off immediately with the younger woman confiding in her a secret from her past and how it has affected her. Ginger watches the pair with growing interest whilst hiding her own pain.

Now that they have bought their dream home, what comes next is family and Oliver, a physics professor who is ten years older than his wife, is keen to start as soon as possible. But Jenna is a child-law attorney and wants to focus a little more on her career hoping she'll make partner before upping roots for motherhood.

Until Jenna unexpectedly falls pregnant. And she doesn't realise how much she wants this until now. Oliver is of course delighted and after discussing options, the couple decide on a home birth with a midwife recommended to them by Peyton, despite her mother's advice to the contrary. The pregnancy progresses well and without any cause for concern. Mother and baby are doing well. Until they're not. After a long labour, Jenna gives birth to her baby boy. So what went wrong?

Immediately following the birth, Jenna finds herself understandably exhausted. Only this fatigue doesn't go away. With every passing day, she grow more and more tired and she knows her baby needs her and how can she care for him if she is always sleeping? Surely he must be hungry by now. She asks Oliver to pass her the baby to feed and catches the pain in his eyes. What's wrong? Where's her baby? "There is no baby" Oliver tells her. NO! He's here, she knows he is. She birthed him. She held him. She looked into his beautiful eyes as he blinked at her. He's real. He's definitely real. So where is he?

Struggling to stay awake even for a minute, Jenna fights to uncover the truth. But Oliver, worried for her health and sanity, checks her into a psychiatric centre for treatment. There, Jenna continues to demand to see her baby. And it is there she is hit with the shocking truth. And her whole world shatters.

Oh. My. Gosh. This domestic-slash-psychological thriller is packed full of secrets, lies and deception of a whole other level. Hard to believe that this is a thriller debut for this author. The story was so addictive and filled with all the hallmarks of a stellar thriller - complex characters, unreliable narrators, secrets and lies and everything in between. Added to that it also addressed issues such as mental health, post natal depression and psychosis, pregnancy loss, sexual assault, drugs and coercive control. Added to that, we have neighbourhood friendships that border on toxic and the appalling behaviour of family. I'm sorry, but nothing excuses the way Ginger's four sons treated her or behaved.

The story unfolds through the recent past and the present timelines via narratives from Jenna and Ginger. It is clear from the outset that Ginger has her own issues but her story had me just as intrigued as to its outcome and how it related to the main one involving Jenna. But the author cleverly weaves each thread from each of the characters together to form a bigger clearer tapestry. It wasn't long before I figured out what was actually going on and I was eager to find out if I was right...as indeed I was. But guessing the outcome never ruins the story for me, as the thrill is in the ride and what a ride we are given!

My one complaint seems to be the consensus of many other readers - what was the author trying to say with that ending? I re-read it several times and I still can't quite figure it out. I'm all for a twist in the tail but at least make it a tad clearer because that final line is rather confusing.

Nevertheless, THE HOMEMAKER is a stunning addition to the domestic suspense genre and one I'm sure most of this fanbase would devour as I did. It has all the hallmarks and everything you could want in a thriller.

I would like to thank #ShariJRyan, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheHomemaker in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Wedding Night by Clare Boyd

The Wedding Night by Clare Boyd
Genre: Domestic thriller, Domestic drama, Suspense
Read: 4th July 2023
Published: 3rd July 2023

★★★★ 4 stars

DESCRIPTION:

Whatever doubts I've had about my fiancé, I'm determined this will be the happiest day of my life. I smooth the expensive white silk of my perfect dress and retouch my make-up, trying to cover the dark circles under my eyes. But when I go to find my daughter, her room is empty. My beautiful girl has vanished.

My fiancé William is devastated as I force our guests to leave. My hands are shaking but as I stand amidst the wilting flowers and the discarded champagne glasses, I swear I’ll stop at nothing to find my daughter.

Crying in William’s arms, I try to remember that he just wants what is best for me. Even if Tess has been a difficult teenager, he’s loved her like his own, welcomed us into this beautiful home, the ivy-covered stone house nestled at the end of the tree-lined driveway.

Then my best friend tells me she saw Tess sobbing before the wedding. I thought I’d built a perfect new family for my little girl, but what if I’ve brought her into terrible danger? I remember the guest I only recognised from old photos. William swore it was all in the past. But was he lying?

I think about the unimaginable secret William told me and I swore to keep forever. Could Tess have found out? Will the truth help me find my daughter? Or will it break us all?

A totally unputdownable family drama about the secrets that lurk under the glossy surface of a perfect new life. Perfect for fans of Sally Hepworth, Liane Moriarty and Kerry Fisher.

MY THOUGHTS:

It was the best day of her life...until her daughter went missing...

Firstly, this is not a thriller of any kind so not entirely sure why it is marketed as such. It is more of a drama-slash-suspense. And secondly, I really enjoyed it. More than I thought I would. Although I was on constant edge throughout the story where Hamish was concerned as Boyd had brutally killed off a beloved family dog in a previous book that left me bereft and inconsolable upon finishing. But I am happy to say, Hamish makes is through unscathed with nothing untoward happening to him.

The story begins with a prologue, the promise of a wedding, the beautiful dress, the bluebell woods, a picturesque setting. But something happens to change the bride's course down the aisle of bluebells, and she turns and flees in a panic. This is the only glimpse we get of the wedding until about 70% through the story. Because what precedes, lays the groundwork for what's to come.

Amy and Tess have lived in a two bedroom flat in London for six years since divorcing from Tess' father Nick. But a year ago, she met William online and the two began a slow courtship which has lead to Amy selling their flat and making the move to Surrey to live with him and his teenage son Hal. And on the night after settling in, William pops the question. Amy says yes. She couldn't be happier.

But little by little, Amy begins to uncover a few secrets...beginning with an old baby photo wrapped with an old babygro wrapped lovingly in tissue paper which she found stored in one of the drawers of the old wardrobe. Looking at the photo she assumes the baby is of Hal and, when she presents William with it, he doesn't say otherwise. But trouble begins brewing when she then discovers an old letter from an ex-girlfriend along with some photos of them together. And it seems this ex is still very much in the picture but just how much, Amy isn't sure.

Meanwhile, Tess has settled into her new school alongside Hal and his best friend Rory. She is quick to comeback at Rory's banter which earns her the respect of her peers. It seems she has no trouble adjusting or making friends at the seven grand a term private school, which William happily funds. She gets involved with Hal's friends but she mostly wants to hang out with Rory who she's developed a major crush on. This involves a lot of parties with a lot of drinking and bit of something else going on...exactly what, she's not entirely sure. But as long as she's with Rory she's happy. But soon she and Hal discover that Rory has some even more unsavoury friends which threatens everything she thought she knew about him. And that's not all.

And then Amy and William's big day arrives. Tess and Hal are determined that Rory will not ruin it for them. And just when everyone is in place, the music is playing and William awaits his bride...Tess has disappeared. And Amy will not get married without her daughter by her side. And just when she thought the secrets that have been swirling around them for months couldn't get any worse, her world comes crashing down...

There is so much I could say about this book but to do so would be to spoil it. It is a very long book and it takes quite some time before we actually get to the main event that is outlined in the book's premise. Because while we think it is the story, it's not the whole story. There is so much more which lead up to this point. And quite honestly, as the story progressed I would see exactly where it was going and what was going to happen. So it was no great mystery. But it is long. Sometimes a little too long but it is still a great read.

I do have a few issues though. Besides the obvious in Rory and Sophie. Shoot them both please. These two totally spoilt what should have been a wonderful time for this family. Both of them are self-obsessed and selfish to the core. No, my issue is actually the whole timeline thing. While the story unfolds through the various perspectives of Amy, William, Tess and Hal, there is another one that is in a flashback form dating back to 1990. And then later in the book was the reference to that being twenty four years. But it's thirty four. A big mistake there which should have been picked up. My other issue was that that timeline wasn't entirely clear and appeared at times to be very vague. It was all tied up in the end but I felt it was a little unfinished in that it didn't really pan out clearly.

But overall, it was a compelling drama suspense that had a somewhat happy ending. Of that I was satisfied with. Because if it didn't, it would have felt unfinished. But I liked the ending. My favourite characters were Tess and Hal.

I would like to thank #ClareBoyd, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheWeddingNight in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: The Truth About the Accident by Nicole Trope

The Truth About the Accident by Nicole Trope
Genre: Domestic drama, Domestic thriller
Read: 2nd July 2023
Published: 30th June 2023

★★★ 3.5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

I gaze at my husband’s once-handsome face, so still and pale in the hospital bed. The doctors say I should keep talking. He might be able to hear me even after the terrible accident that left him fighting for his life. But all I have to whisper to my husband is this: I know what you did.

Every day I wave my husband Damon off with a kiss and a smile, drive our precious children to school, and make sure our house is pristine before preparing a delicious meal. I pretend I’m not filled with fury that he once nearly destroyed our perfect life. It’s important to carry on as normal.

That is, until the accident.

My husband was hit by a car. It was pouring with rain. Nobody saw what happened. But the police are asking questions…

Do they know about the terrible argument we had that day?

Do they know about the text message I sent, telling someone to Delete everything?

And do they know that no-one is happier that my husband is in a hospital bed, than me?

An absolutely addictive page-turner about a family in crisis, a marriage at breaking point, and how secrets can be deadly. Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty and Sally Hepworth.

MY THOUGHTS:

There are three sides to this story...her's, mine and the truth...

Nicole Trope is one of my favourite authors and one I go-to without hesitation. And once again delivers a quick, easy read that revolves around an unfaithful husband, an angry wife and a string of women who really should know better. It's a compelling read filled with family drama and a wealth of secrets and lies. And I read it in pretty much one sitting.

The story opens with "the accident" and various 000 calls reporting the incident. Each of the three witnesses to call it in all describe a different car responsible for the hit and run and, while eyewitness accounts are notoriously unreliable, we eventually discover why.

Then we meet Marla. She's the wife of a CEO of a successful IT company. They've been married for twenty-on years and have two teenage children - Sean (19) and Bianca (17). But her marriage isn't all that it appears on Instagram and she self medicates with drink to get her through the day. And her children are practically grown, her usefulness there appears to have ended also. But life hasn't always been like this. She was there when her husband started his company and there as he built it up. She too has reaped the affluent rewards of his success in their beautiful home, luxury cars, designer clothes and expensive lifestyle. She even has botox to keep those wrinkles at bay. And it all looks good on Instagram too. But it's just a facade. And Marla suddenly feels as though she is no longer enough...for anyone anymore.

Sonya is a single mum to twelve year old Jasper. Her own marriage ended nine years ago and her ex has since moved to America, remarried and now has a brand new baby of his own. As a psychologist, one would think Sonya could read the warning signs and prevent all the heartache that came her way but she is only human too. She sits in her office awaiting her client who arranged this unscheduled appointment on her day off long enough to deem him a no-show before she grabs her bag and heads home.

Athena - even her name is ethereal - is a 39 year old woman about become a first time mother, pregnant with the child of her lover who doesn't want children. She thinks she can change his mind, that as soon as he sees his child's heartbeat on the monitor he will fall instantly in love with the baby and move in with her. She wants that more than anything. But at what cost?

When the news comes on that evening, scenes from the hit and run are breaking news. Police are appealing for witnesses, dashcam and mobile phone camera footage to help them identify the victim and the car that ran him down. Each of the three women see the news and each of them recognise the gold watch and the wedding band he wears...albeit, occasionally. Each of them rush to the hospital respectively to identify the victim as Damon Kennedy. But how are each of these women related to him? As the story progresses, readers will discover his relationship with each of them. But what does it all mean?

The police are struggling to find out who is responsible despite investigations and the constant questioning and review of their own respective vehicles, having been identified by nearby CCTV footage. But the drenching rain the day of the accident makes visibility on any footage retrieved next to useless.

And what of Damon Kennedy? And the trail of hurt rejected women in his wake? Did someone run him intentionally? And if so, who? The why is blindingly obvious but with so many suspects, the question remains which one of them did it?

The story unfolds through the differing perspectives of Marla, Athena and Sonya, as well as the odd random inclusion of a mystery woman peppered throughout. Each chapter is heavily inclusive of detailed descriptions of their interactions with Damon as well as each other. Sometimes I found this confusing as I was unsure whether some of the interactions took place before or after the accident. It wasn't entirely clear in the way it was told, leaving me a little baffled in parts.

While this was a quick and easy enough read, it wasn't one of Trope's best. And I really loathe to say that because I know what a brilliant storyteller she is and I love her work. But even our favourite authors can write a tale that we just don't enjoy as much as their others though I know I am bound to love whatever she brings out next.

Overall, a compelling read dripping with secrets, lies and tension. With a twist at the end that even left me guessing.

I would like to thank #NicoleTrope, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheTruthAboutTheAccident in exchange for an honest review.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Nicole Trope went to university to study Law but realised the error of her ways when she did very badly on her first law essay because-as her professor pointed out- ‘It’s not meant to be a story.’ She studied teaching instead and used her holidays to work on her writing career and complete a Masters’ degree in Children’s Literature. After the birth of her first child she stayed home full time to write and raise children, renovate houses and build a business with her husband.

The idea for her first published novel, The Boy under the Table, was so scary that it took a year for her to find the courage to write the emotional story.

She is now published by Bookouture and is an Amazon top 100 bestseller in the USA, UK, AUS and CAN.

She lives in Sydney with her husband and three children.

REVIEW: Evil at Alardyce House by Heather Atkinson

Evil at Alardyce House (Alardyce House #4) by Heather Atkinson
Genre: Historical thriller, Gothic
Read: 1st July 2023
Published: 30th June 2023

★★★★★ 5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

The history of the Alardyce family is fraught with scandal and intrigue.

But after her eldest son Robert leaves the country, finally Amy Alardyce can enjoy some peace. Robert is wanted by the police for some unspeakable crimes, and his family hope he has run far enough and never looks back.

A decade after his disappearance, Robert has forged a successful life for himself, making his fortune from the diamond and gold mines of Africa. But when he sees a death notice in the newspaper, the call to go home to Scotland grows ever louder.

At Alardyce House, there are big changes too, and the fragile peace the family have enjoyed for so long is feeling more fragile than ever. And as the past comes back to haunt Amy and her children, will she have to finally accept that the curse of the Alardcye family can never be outrun…

MY THOUGHTS:

Can the curse of the Alardyce family be outrun...?

I'm saddened to have come to the end of this brilliant series but wow! What an ending. EVIL AT ALARDYCE HOUSE is the fourth, and I'm guessing the final book to what was essentially a trilogy to begin with. But having read the previous three, given where the third one "His Fatal Legacy" ended a fourth one was needed to bring the story full circle and to give closure to the Alardyce curse.

It's now 1910 - a new century, a new era - and twelve years have passed since Robert Alardyce fled his home after a violent confrontation with his mother and stepfather. He bought a passage to the first ship leaving port and headed to the South Americas where he bounced around before finding his feet and a new purpose. South Africa and the diamond mines. That's where he wanted to be, to make his fortune and drive out the dark whispers that tempt him. He makes contacts there and is as ruthless as ever as he gains control of the biggest diamond mine in the country. But after twelve years, he decides to head home to reclaim his wife and daughter whom have never been far from his thoughts.

When the door knocks at Alardyce House some two weeks later, everyone is shocked to see Robert standing there. If he was expecting forgiveness then he was to be disappointed. Twelve years may be a long time but people have long memories. But of all of them, his mother Amy is overjoyed to see her firstborn return home. His wife, Jane, is another matter. While he returned with the intention of reuniting with her, Jane has spent the past decade trying to move on from the torment he had put her through. The deep wounds have lasting scars as anger continues to burn inside her heart. He assures her that he is a changed man but the past looms heavily with its cloud of doubt. Past actions tell a different story. Is he sincere? She cannot be sure. Amy is quick to give him the benefit of the doubt but then she is his mother. And Robert has always cleverly disguised his motives in the past.

Alardyce House has always had its fair share of tragedy and it seems that isn't over. Although change has come, the family legacy must continue though some have trouble adjusting to their new roles. Amy has always been the matriarch that holds the family together but does she have the strength to continue now? Or is it time to pass the mantle over to the next generation?

I wasn't sure what to expect from this final installment of the Alardyce series when I began but I thoroughly enjoyed it. All our old favourites return, as well as some not-so favourite. There are a few surprises along the way and I even shed a few tears. Though the era has moved from Victorian times, there is still that element that runs over from the previous era. Certainly there are some Victorian traditions which Amy is quick to continue to recognise despite the changing times.

If you like gritty, dark and sometimes chilling historical fiction then I thoroughly recommend this series! I do advise that they be read in order. And be warned, the first one is especially dark, graphic and very chilling.

Overall, EVIL AT ALARDYCE HOUSE is an addictive read that will keep you turning the pages until the very shocking end. The entire series has been just as addictive, just as absorbing and decidedly very chilling at times. But a brilliant read from start to finish. I've enjoyed my time with the Alardyces.

REVIEW: The Party on Laurel Street by Ruth Heald

The Party on Laurel Street by Ruth Heald
Genre: Psychological thriller
Read: 30th June 2023
Published: 28th June 2023

★★★★ 3.5 stars (rounded up)

DESCRIPTION:

Only she knows what really happened that night…

It was meant to be a time of celebration, of neighbours chatting over sparkling glasses of wine, enjoying the decadent surroundings of the huge mansion house which overlooked all the houses on Laurel Street. But then my troubled friend Gabbie has a heated argument with her husband. She leaves the party and disappears without a trace.

Gabbie’s neighbours rally round, painfully aware that Laurel Street has already had its share of tragedy. Years ago, when we were children, my best friend Erin vanished, never to be seen again, after having a secret party in the woods with me and Gabbie as our families celebrated the new year.

I want Gabbie to be found safe. I need her to come home. Because if she doesn’t, I know that all eyes will be on me as they were years ago.

But then I discover that my husband Luke was the last person to see Gabbie alive and I’m reminded of all the times I saw them getting close. As much as I pushed it to the back of my mind, I have to ask, can I really trust them? And worse, is someone about to make me pay for the secret I’ve been keeping for so long?

A totally unputdownable and gripping psychological thriller with a shocking twist for fans of Lisa Jewell, T.M. Logan and Louise Candlish.

MY THOUGHTS:

Only she knows what really happened that night...

Well...who would want to live on Laurel Street? Not me, that's for sure! But it made for an ideal setting. Nosy neighbours and all that. Roz was especially a thorn in my side with her exacting ideas for perfection on the street.

The story begins with a twenty five year old mystery of missing ten year old Erin who disappeared on New Years Eve party after she and her friends decided to hold a little party of their own in the woods. However, Erin brought her rucksack with her and was intent on running away. The question is...did she?

Some two decades later, Mel is returning to Laurel Street with her husband Luke and their one year old Lily, moving into the house she shared with her grandmother during her childhood. Since her gran passed she had left her house jointly to Mel and her mother, Angela, who was living in Spain. As soon as Mel arrived she was greeted by her childhood friend Gabbie who had also recently returned to the street with her husband and living in the house that Mel and Gabbie could only covet as children. But the shadow of Erin's disappearance still loomed largely over them.

At the end of the street sat the gothic manor house in which Erin had grown up and her mother Tamsin still lives. Every year Tamsin held a memorial in the village church for Erin. Mel continued a friendship with Tamsin over the years, the woman still clearly mourning the loss of her daughter with no closure and no idea what happened to her. When Tamsin decides to throw a party for the street, Mel steps in to help her organise and set up. Everyone in the street comes and it is a huge success. Until a drunken argument with her husband sees Gabbie storm out of the house...and vanishes without a trace.

At first, Mel thinks Gabbie has just left her husband as that is what he told her. But then all her calls to her friend not only go unanswered but go straight to voicemail, as if the phone is switched off. After two weeks and still no word, Mel is convinced something has happened to her and goes to the police.

The police presence on the street rakes up all old memories again from twenty five years before. They didn't find Erin then...can they find Gabbie now? Is Gabbie's disappearance linked to Erin's? Someone knows something and soon secrets begin to surface turning everyone's world upside down.

I have read all of Ruth Heald's books and I love her work though I would have to say that this one was less like a thriller than her others. It was a slow burn as the story gained momentum and was definitely intriguing but not one of her best. I did enjoy it for the most part, despite some of the unlikeable characters.

Overall, a compelling read dripping with secrets and tension.

I would like to thank #RuthHeald, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #ThePartyOnLaurelStreet in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW: A Shop Girl in Bath by Rachel Brimble

A Shop Girl in Bath (Pennington's #1) by Rachel Brimble
Genre: Historical fiction, Saga
Read: 29th June 2023
Published: 1st July 2018
(Fifth birthday celebration blitz)

★★★★ 4.5 stars

DESCRIPTION:

1910 – A compelling tale of one woman's fight for recognition in Bath's leading department store.

Hardworking and whip smart, Elizabeth Pennington is the rightful heir of Bath's premier department store – but her father, Edward Pennington, believes his daughter lacks the business acumen to run his empire. He is resolute a man will succeed him.

Determined to break from her father's hold and prove she is worthy of inheriting Pennington's, Elizabeth forms an unlikely alliance with ambitious and charismatic master glove-maker Joseph Carter. They have the same goal: bring Pennington's into a new decade while embracing woman's equality and progression. But, despite their best intentions, it is almost impossible not to mix business and pleasure...

Can the two thwart Edward Pennington's plans for the store? Or will Edward prove himself an unshakeable force who will ultimately ruin both Elizabeth and Joseph?

MY THOUGHTS:

Welcome to Pennington's...Bath's finest department store...

What a delightful read A SHOP GIRL IN BATH (previously published as "Mistress of Pennington's") is! A felt like I'd stepped into Harpers' Emporium with a whole new set of characters and completely different staff. Of course, Elizabeth Pennington's father Edward Pennington, the owner of the empire, is nothing like Ben and Sally Harper who nurture their staff and treat them like family. Elizabeth's father ruled his empire with an iron fist and sees no room for change despite the times changing. But oh, the opulence of the store I could just see through Rachel Brimble's vivid description.

Set during the late Edwardian era at a time that had only just gotten used to the change of the old Queen having passed nine years previous, this tale brings forth yet even more change. And it is change that not every one wants nor are they comfortable with. But the world is moving forward. A new century, a new monarch, times are definitely changing. Women are finding their voice and the suffragette movement is ensuring that they will be heard. Elizabeth Pennington wants to bring Pennington's into the 20th century yet her father is set in his ways and had she been born a boy then maybe he might listen to her ideas. But as it stands, she is female, she has no voice and in his opinion is good only for marriage and breeding. He has a suitor lined up for her but Elizabeth fights him every step of the way, knowing who he has chosen will quickly fall into line with what her father wants and thus gain control of the Pennington empire when he passes. Elizabeth refuses to allow that to happen. She has fought too long and too hard to prove herself and still she is overlooked. But she is determined that one day Pennington's will be hers because she is its rightful heir, despite her gender.

It is 1910 and as the world is changing, Pennington's remains a Victorian treasure with the likes of Selfridges leaving them behind. And Elizabeth doesn't want this to happen. She wants to take Pennington's into the future with so many ideas flowing but her old fashioned father refuses to listen.

Joseph Carter is small businessman - a milliner who makes gloves and hats. But as times are changing around them, so too are the days of small shop keepers with department stores bringing all the business. His father, also a milliner in their family run store Carter and Son, is not happy with the change. He wants to continue to make and sell his product and yet they are being squeezed out by the bigger department stores that are essentially a one-stop-shop for customers. Joseph can see the value in taking his business to Pennington's in the hope that they will sell his designs. He has ideas that will ensure guaranteed success should Pennington's agree.

When he steps into the opulent store for the first time it is with awe he looks around him. He approaches the ladies department and meets Elizabeth Pennington. Will she listen to his ideas and agree to sell his designs, securing a prosperous future for both Pennington's and Carter and Son? What will Edward do when Elizabeth approaches him with the idea? Will he block the collaboration that will surely be a guaranteed success? And what will he think when Elizabeth and Joseph connect on a personal level? They are not of the same class and, snob that he is, will surely block their association in any way that he can. After all, he doesn't want Pennington's to end up in the hands of a working class grafter?

What a truly delightful tale that I enjoyed from start to finish. I shall have to hunt out the others in the series to continue to follow the Pennington's journey. An engaging tale, A SHOP GIRL IN BATH is brought to life through Brimble's deft storytelling and opulent descriptions.
